Could you change the way the game determines if a critter has taken damage for honoring purposes. Currently if a spell casting mob buffs his str you cannot honor the creature because its below its new max hitpts. Possible fixes
1. When checking to see if honor is accepted measure from the creatures spawned max hitpts
2. Allow a buff to immediately have the hitpts gained filled up so the creature is maxed out again
3. Don't have mobs cast str buffs untill the have taken player damage
any of the choices would fix the issue of not being able to honor a mob that has actually taken no damage but is still un honorable
