So after much thought I have decided to give UO a try again. I am return after a very long break, played DAoC and WoW during that time. Needless to say, the game is a mystery again and I very much like that idea.

Now for the HOWEVER part...

The install/download process is proving to be more than frustrating. I am not sure what I am doing wrong, but I can't log in at all. I reactivated my account (that started the frustration having to locate acount codes) and installed the game from an "Ultima Online The Eighth Age" CD I purchased somewhere in the last few years but had never used. Install completed. The game then patched but all I get is an error that the memory cannot be found. Ok, so I purchased the new SA expansion but I can't seem to download it unless I can log into the game, which I cannot do.

Does anyone have any idea what I am doing wrong here? Do I need to remove the program and reinstall? Any help would be appreciated!

Funny you made this post. I just returned after a 3 years break from UO and had such a bad experience trying to reactivate my account that I nearly gave up.

First editing my account would get stuck on enter a game code, so I go to uogamecodes.com to buy an SA upgrade. However Game Codes wont let me buy it saying my account is to young. Yet my account was created Dec-1997. I spent 30 minutes going around and around till I gave up.

So next day I decide to give it one more shot, this time I edit my account and I get taken straight to the details page which then lets me edit the billing info and reactivate my account. Then I am able to buy an upgrade code for SA and get rolling.

I downloaded the client off uoherald.com and have now been playing for the last three days.

The good thing is seeing some of the backward dumb things finally being fixed. Like commodity deeds being able to be taken to your house and expanded in a commodity deed chest.

The insurance menu and the ability to easily see whats insured. how much coin you have in the bank and how many deaths that coin will insure. Did they ever find a bug in the insurance system or was it user error and the UI update fixed it?

The ability to use soul stones without a 24 hour timer between uses was a nice surprise.

I have only just started to unpack my bank account to the point I can use it and start playing. So I have another good month getting to know the new content.

I read the Sea Adventures expansion/booster pack on uoguide.com today and see the use of the ocean is FINALLY being put to use.

Now if only Mythic/EA would come out and say yah or nay to the classic shard idea. Me having started in Dec 1997 am very pro classic shard, however do not hold my breath.

Cheers

Rissa, what operating system are you using by chance? I know many Vista & Win 7 users have to run the program in Admin Mode. Check this if you are using either of them. Also there is a tech forum ( UO Tech - Stratics Forums ) that may be able to help also. GL have fun & welcome back

I had the same problem. Only the EC works for me and it took me half a day to switch it to a readable font. We will never see new people if it is that hard to start playing.

I'm just back too after 3 - 4 years. Had similar problems but after going directly to the current client (as opposed to upgrading) things seem to be fine.

I must say that I have been on Dungeons & Dragons Online, WoW, Lord of The Rings Online, and a couple of others in the interim. And while the graphics are far superior I found that I got bored much easier than I ever did on UO. Things just seem more wild and open on UO. I'm very glad to be back.

Just my two cents, if you are getting back into the game you really ought to try the enhanced client, and I mean give it a really good shot, as in a couple of weeks of steady usage. Once you get used to it, it really is the better of the two clients, and if you haven't already bought UO Assist, you don't need to spend the extra $15 US on that.

There are also some great, legal, mods available for the enhanced client that improve the functionality and/or appearance of the client. You will probably definitely want to check some of those out if you choose to stick with the enhanced client.

What operating system are you using? The memory issue makes it sound like you are installing on an old Win98 Machine.

If one registers UOA, then takes a UO break and even comes back on a different account, UOA can be gotten for free as long as Tugsoft has your name. I know ... I did that 5 years ago.

Which was why I made the point of saying, "if you haven't already bought UO Assist". :)

However, I didn't know that they would transfer the license to a new account.

I would like to make a plea to the Developers.

I guess that having players return to Ultima Online is a good thing for the game, isn't it ?

Would it be possible, please, to make the experience of reactivating an older account and be back up into UO after years, a smooth and painless one ?

I am not sure what needs to be improved here, but if returning players are having difficulties in reactivating their accounts perhaps some adjustments need be made ?

Just a thought............

The new client is crap. Ignore its fanboys.
I suggest you take a look at this poster's posting history and decide for yourself as to whether anything he has to say should be trusted or not. I'll give him one thing, he is fairly consistent...

As are you.

Doesn't make either one of you right; it just means you are both consistent in your posting.

It is that merely in both posts you do the same thing, and I have responded to both.

I wouldn't call it a target, so much, as reiterating that you may not like what someone says but they are still entitled to their opinion. Which, it appears, you seem to be unable to grasp.

That is all. If you have anything else, please feel free not to derail the thread an further than we've let it and simply PM me. :)

That post was not about anything EA or employees did but what a user was able to do to make the EA product palatable. There is a difference.

However, your posts always supply reasons for alternative thinking whereas Arans normally do not. Therefore you are wheat, he is chaff. Simple!

Imagine that, my view on an inferior product hasn't changed, much like that product's quality.

Thank you for all of the replies!

My OS is XP for those who asked.

I tried installing the CC but still get the same error. I have uninstalled UO and I am now reinstalling the client as suggested. If that doesn't work, my husband seems to feel sufficiently sorry enough for me that I may be able to get a new computer out of this highly frustrating experience... do I say thanks to EA/Mythic/UO here?

I don't know what to say about the reactivation process other than it was enough to make me consider giving up. I think that process alone took me about 90 minutes and considerable swearing. It really does not seem very user friendly and should be improved if account reactivation is valued.

I am going to stick with the CC initially. I do have a UOAssist key stuck on a floppy disk (please don't laugh and yea, it's been that long) and no way to retrieve it. I have not yet brought myself to delve into the process of trying to recover the key, but that will be a priority if I can get the game running.

Wish me luck and I hope to see some of you in game... may be even on my new computer!

Sounds a lot like my story. I left uo for eight years and played daoc then a few others then over to wow and then back to uo last year. My first week I almost quit because nobody was ever at brit bank so I figured nobody else really played. I then saw a moongate and this place called luna. Ohhh thats where everyone was this whole time! Doh!

Welcome back :)

As I said above, I had the same problem with the CC and still have. There is a problem with the patching somewhere. My account was active to keep my castle for nearly 3 years without playing. After emailing for days, with getting standard emails about account password and nickname, and that I´m not able to write, installing CC from everywhere 3 times, I gave up. Gave it a last shot with the EC and was able to log in on the first try. Then I had this fontproblem, that I was not able to read a single word( only squares). It´s like your new handy is in chinise (and you´re not). Took me half a day to find someone online that told me what to press until the client was in english.
The EC is not perfect and mage PVP is a pancake, but I got used to it and can play now. Very frustrating. Nice work EA!

I hope you downloaded the client from the UO page as it is close up to date.
I am not even sure you can update from all UO disks these days as at one point they wanted to streamline patching.

You don't need to worry about that if you are using your old account. All you need to do is start up the client with UO Assist, log into your account and then click on the "?" box in the UO Assist window and follow the instructions to retrieve your key.

Well I finally got the game working. What fun!

I have gone through my a few characters and found that I kept about 1 billion fish steaks (yum), Felucca moonstones (I forgot those were even needed), and at least 83 cakes (all on the same character too).

I will have some work cut out for me, but that should be the fun part.

I am still a little perplexed though. According to my Eighth Age information I should have one more character slot but it is not showing up. Does anyone know if I need to redeem my game code in the game in order to get this to appear?

Thanks for the UOA instruction Llewen. That will be my task for tomorrow.

Once again all the help is appreciated!

I have some very important advice for you. Do not throw anything out, or give anything away, without having someone that knows rares, that you trust, look at them. There are a lot of items from years ago that can be quite valuable.
