Iv'e played a low level paladin, while the spells were nice, I just have a question

Which really is the better tank: paladin or warrior?

I was doing a look at the guild we run, there is one paladin out of the 50 or so of us in guild. several warriors, 3 locks and a ton of hunters. I've got a low level druid but am building up XP so figured I'd grind something else while building double on the lock and druid.

And I've never played a warrior...so I'm wondering should I make a paladin for tanking as we only have one in the guild, or should I work the warrior. I know its a matter of opinion, just trying to get an idea behind both fo them from those with experience

I play all the classes pretty much equally. I also don't do the group thing and the guild thing, so I look at characters from a solo standpoint.

To me, the paladin is one of the easier classes to play, perhaps because it's not that different from my favorite type of character on UO. I like warriors that can heal, cure, and rez. The downside of paladins is lack of a ranged attack, so crowd control can be more difficult. Another downside is that the one time I went into an instance with a group, the paladin couldn't hold aggro.

If you're thinking group, you may wish to go with the warrior. However, if you want to go kill things without being bothered by others, get a paladin.

Or play them all like I do.

Pallys are not tanks. Off tanks at best. At least I can never seem to hold any aggro when I'm with a group and I'm in the lead tank role.

My cat tends to pull aggro from pallies when I'm in a group with my hunter.

However, a Ret pally can make a nice main tank if the others are careful with their aggro.

It comes down to play the character you like best. I've tried and tried to play a warrior, and I just can't get into them. In my opinion a warrior is the hardest class to play simply because they take a TON of hits with no healing ability at all. They can't fear like so many other classes can, they just get hit. At least with a pally, you can heal yourself.

I'm a warrior as my main. I like it, but I'll admit it's hard to begin with. Yup, the no healing ability makes things harder. You want to look to strength and stamina for good stats. Always have to make bandages and have a ton of food. If you can't get healed (maybe your out in a field killing a bear) you can usually kill 2-3 things before having to eat. Depends on the mob. Sometimes its a challenge to keep aggro with a pally and thats why I think they should be off tanks and warrior main tank.

For me, warriors were hard up to level 40 or so. Oh and it's nice to duel wield (at level 20 you get it) when your soloing something, makes it quicker usually. Plate rocks, too. About the fear thing..."Intimidating Shout" fears up to 4 things..but with a 3 min cooldown. That's a pain. usually someone fears the mob theyre on then quickly throws on a bandage and proceeds.

No class can tank like a well played, well geared warrior... especially now that they nerfed druids...though druids aren't too shabby either. I'm horde so I havent been privvy to watching a pally tank for me. I imagine they'd be a good substitute in lower end 5-mans as an MT, but no way do you want one being an MT on a raid. They don't gen nearly enough threat. They'd fill a solid support/off-tank role.

For leveling, I wouldnt invest too much into protection. Yes you will be harder to kill, but it will take forever, unless you are leveling in a group. I would suggest a basic 34/4/0 build for leveling to 60. What you do from there is a matter of choice.

You can replace swords with your own weapon of choice.

There is definitely a place for Paladin tanks in the game up to the first 25-mans, and possibly in some of those. Haven't done anything 25-man past Gruul or Magtheridon, but my guild does Karazhan with Warrior and Pally tanks. Our pally tanks are extremely good, and can hold aggro on anything. It's all about the quality of the player.

By stat comparison, the 2 are very comparable. Dodge, Parry, and Block are universal stats that can be found easily on Pre-Karazhan gear for both classes. The most solid difference being +spell is crucial for a pally tank. The only thing breaking pally tanking is itemization post-Karazhan. It starts to funnel back down to healing gear again, with the exception of the Tier sets.

So pally tankage is very viable at the end game. In my experience, finding a good tank is hard no matter the class (Druid, Warrior, or Pally). Warriors just tend to be the default, and good pally tanks are just to few at this point in the game. Give it a few months until they find their way

Last, Warriors are solid tanks. It goes without saying. The road has been paved, the guides written, and there is little wonder about Warrior tanking capabilities.

Warriors often avoid the weapon specialization talents, and for a good reason: you have no idea what weapon you will wind up using at the end. Best to not invest unless you are SURE you'll never use anything other than a sword.

And ...in my opinion, I don't think the talent is that great. At least it's not better than other things you can spec into.

If you're going PvE (dungeons and raiding), I'd go with more buf****e, longevity, and group support:

The important thing about this build is solid damage in a group environment, and bringing as much utility and buffs to the party as possible. Also, you can be a great Arms OT with these talents. Some others I didn't bother with because they are a matter of style, imo. For example, TM, Imp Demo Shout, and some others; it just depends on the warrior.

Fury is a different story and one I'm a little less familiar with
Good luck!

I have witnessed a Prot pally hold aggro as well as a Feral Druid or Warrior.
It *can* be done. Personally, I group with the Warrior, though the Feral Druid I mentioned did an outstanding job of tanking Botanica last weekend.

Just my two coppers...

Big diff between a 5 man and Karazahn. I've yet to see a pally be able to handle that. Aggro is not really the issue. Our guildmaster is a ret pally and when he wants to, he can steal aggro like the best of them. Durability is the issue. He is very squishy compared to a warrior or feral.

Of course a lot of it comes down to the person playing. We have 2 70 pallies in my guild.. one is a ret and DPS's like mad, and can offtank for a limited time (too fragile to main tank for long), and a prot pallie who is a little less fragile, but still delicate, but cannot hold mobs...

Well, I've not been to Kara yet, but from the videos I have seen of one of the boss fights, I would have to agree with you. I know the Prot pally tanks for 5-man and Heroic 5-man as well, but bigger raids? I'll be able to see how that all works out in another month or so.
