We experienced this over the last two days (11/3 and 11/4)... I am posting this here for two reasons-- 1.) to see if anyone else has experienced this, and 2.) to provide the solution to the problem that we found...
Upon attempting to log into the 2D client, we discovered this problem:
1.) Patch screen came up as normal;
2.) Patch completed as normal;
3.) "OK" button was offered when the patch was completed as normal;
4.) WHEN OK BUTTON WAS DEPRESSED, THE GAME SHUT DOWN, RETURNING US TO THE DESKTOP.
We ran our anti-virus software; this did not correct the problem.
We ran the enhanced client; it had no login problems and performed just fine--but this did not correct the problem with logging into the 2D client.
We wracked our brains for a solution, recognizing that this problem had to be the result of something that had changed in our computers, rather than the game servers.
Here is what we discovered:
A recent update from the good folks at ICQ (which updates your ICQ client to version 7.2) also included an option for an ICQ toolbar. The ICQ toolbar appears to be the problem.
Solution:
We went into "Add/Remove Programs" and removed the ICQ toolbar (which was listed separately from the rest of the ICQ program). Once this step was completed, the 2D client loaded and played properly / normally. We are not sure why the ICQ toolbar program would affect the 2D client in this manner, but obviously there is a conflicting line of code SOMEWHERE!
