Is it just me, or can you not gain stealing in Tram?. I am trying to gain with a buddy, we are guilded and can steal off each other and both in the 70's skill and part of the thieves guild. We tried stealing off each other for about an hour today and neither of us got a single gain. We tried dye tubs, gold, cloth, regs, a whole buch of stuff and didn't get 1 gain!... Can anyone help us with gaining in Tram?.
Thanks in advance...

I train my thief in fel. off her packie using a pile of gold for now. I find a really isolated spot and set up a macro in UOA. She gains pretty good. She's still struggling with gains, but did pretty good in the 70's doing it that way. It's just a realy realy slow process.

To prevent getting attacked by other players while training, I always found the library in Occlo worked well. There you also have the safety of the guards to prevent player attacks. It may also be a good idea to bond a bug (blue or fire) to use as a packy as they won't die to a single flamestrike like I have seen numerous packies fall to. :) ...la

The way I train stealing...

Get a pack animal and 1000 gold, or some empty bottles, etc. and head to Felucca. Find a quiet corner somewhere and start stealing the item from the pack animal's pack via targeting the item to steal (pile of gold for instance).

You'll want the gold pile or item you target to be the maximum weight you can steal for your skill level. Also, make sure that you have your pack animal guard you while in a guard zone so the guards don't whack you for stealing from it.

I am also having trouble gaining.

Its been almost a year since I have trained the stealing skill. Snooping is at 100 (if that matters) and Stealing is at 93.9.
Skill total = 592
Skill is marked up

I was not guilded so I joined the Thieves Guild (but I tried gaining before joining with no luck). I brought my packy to fel in a guard zone and had my packy guard me. I have attempted stealing stacks of 9 stone items. I have not had even the GGS gain. Also, I have tried stealing from a few of the named NPCs but I receive a message that their backpack is empty. Oh, and I have attempted stealing with both negative and positive karma.

Any ideas?

Kill yourself? Well the character not you. Sometimes helps to "reset" things a bit.
I steal outside of town so not sure if that helps or not.

Also try Salty's approach. I steal targeting my pack, but targeting the pile I'm sure works as well.

I used a packie and targeted single items weighing the right amount for the level I was at. I'm not sure if I can remember the full list now, but something like: shirt, 2 stones. robe, 3 stones, skirt, 4 stones, cloak, 5 stones, bronze shield, 6 stones, metal kite shield 7 stones, heater shield, 8 stones, war fork, 9 stones, lap harp 10 stones.

Pick a nice, lonely spot out of a guardzone. I actually did it behind the house, since we have a house in Fel.

There is a way to train the skill in tram side, go to buc den blacksmith shop and set a bag/backpack on the floor filled stacks of band aids. Be sure the NPCs remain in the room while you steal, when we did this [years ago] we color the backpack the same color of the robe we had on and stood over the bag as we stole from it. Having the NPCs remain in the room will set off the alarms of your attempts to steal the band aids, but being a no guard zone, you will be alright.

The best part of this was we had no packers to worry about, no gold or dye tubs, now it has been a long time since we trained this skill on the one thief we have but this was how we trained the skill back then and I pretty sure the way we did it then would still work today. Having the bag the same color of the robe you wear will hide it if anyone pops in to check the two barrels or grab the empty basket. Most people just recall out if they see anyone there and there any ore on the ground, then they think, 'oh they got it already', or 'they training blacksmith skills'.

I'm not sure if this still works or not, because I train using a packie in fel, but I used to train at the jhelom docks. It's outside a guard zone, so when the NPCs catch you and call the guards, nobody comes. I would drop a few weighted items (stacks of bandies, bottles, etc.) into a barrel and steal them back out. But this was years ago, and I've not tried it recently, so I don't know if it still works. I don't see why it wouldn't.
