Training Magic on my Bake....

Hi guys - you're humble newbie here - needing more advice.

I just finished training my first Bake up to 100 in all combat skills, except Magery - which is at 88.

Any suggestions as to the best way to get that 88 to 100?

Normal use of the bake in hunting is the best way.

Otherwise it's just letting it cast spells at anything. It isn't fast either way.

In the Twisted Weld I often find CU's or Swoops are stuck on rocks. Its a good opportunity to train magic as they should only be able to hit them with spells.

Fair enough.... It'll be more fun anyway. Thx Farsight

The fastest way is what is called "blue training". You can only do this in Trammel. You just simply have two fight each other. If you are in a guild you will need to keep them healed for two minutes after which one of them will turn blue, and then you can just let them cast on each other until the cows come home.

Typically fully training magery this way will generally be accomplished in less than 36 hours. One thing you can do to speed things up a bit when your pet is approaching 100 is start casting energy vortexes and having your pet attack them. Pets will get good gains as they dispel the summons.

If at all possible you want to do this in Felucca outside of a guard zone. The reason for this is that this will allow you to keep your ev healed, which will force your pet to dispel the ev, which is what you want to have happen. This is a lot faster than straight blue training, but it is still slow, and I'm not exactly sure at what skill level you can start doing this with your pet.

This. I always blue train magery. I also ALWAYS blue train magery FIRST. Having less total skill points on the pet helps them gain faster, just like your characters. I get the magery out of the way and then train the fighting skills.

I also train the magery first. I don't know if having lower skill totals makes a difference but because I train guilded it's a lot easier to keep the pets alive for that two minutes if they have low combat skills.

WOW! Great advice, and makes PERFECT sense. Now, can I save time training by having my Runey and Baked Kit go at each other, or do I need to use the same type of critters to fight each other? :)

No, you can have different pet types fight each other. If you are in a guild keeping something alive that is fighting a rune beetle for two minutes can be a challenge. :)

I wouldn't really say blue pet training was faster, it's just a more convenient thing for the tamer than having to go round spawns and hunt stuff :) You'll get the same result, and it may be slightly faster if you're not experienced at knowing good spawns and using them efficiently. It's just awfully boring, and to me it feels like work rather than playing a game. I look at the "it just takes x hours" and think a) "I'm paying money so I can do this?" or b) "I could be playing with my tamer and pets doing something fun" But I get bored easily :D

I'd say hunt with your pet and use it. It'll gain if you can simply keep it casting. I personally like high hp monsters that take a while to kill, then you aren't running round spawns like a loonie but your pet gets a quick breather between respawns to meditate.

If you have a second pet to train, taking them out together on training trips will help you develop good pet handling and vetting skills. Fully trained pets are only as good as the tamer in control of them. If you wait till a pet is fully trained before using it, you'll be much more scared it might die. Ok, it's good to keep your pets alive regardless, but I think if you're learning the ropes you don't need that pressure ;)

Hi Llewen... Tell me how this guild/non-guild thing works... And do I need to be in Tram or will Malas do? And I assume I'd need to "box them in" so they can only cast and not melee, right?

And of course you're right, Wenchy... And I'll probably adopt both of these methods - focused training and just goin out and fighting.

Thx as usual for weighing-in on this...

Cheers :)

You don't need to "box them in" and that is actually illegal and can earn you a trip to jail. You just have them fight each other. I'm actually not sure whether it works if you aren't guilded, but if you are guilded you just sic one pet on the other, then heal like mad for two minutes, at which time one will turn blue and you can relax. It works in the Trammel rules set, which would include Malas.

Aye, you need to be guilded in Tram or I doubt they'll do damage to each other.

If you're training inside the town guards, be careful to get your pets guarding you so they show as green before you issue a kill command. If you just say all kill and target a pet that can end up with you and the attacking pet being killed by guards :D

If I understand you correctly, after a couple of minutes they no longer damage each other but continue to gain in Magery and Resist - correct? And, can you explain why this is?

Sorry to be so persistent, just trying to understand the "mechanics" here...

Btw, why would it be illegal to keep them separated?

What happens is that after two minutes, as long as you don't issue them a guard or kill command, one of the two pets will turn blue. In Trammel your pets can't harm blue player character related mobiles, so the green pet will no longer do any damage to the blue pet, and because the green pet is actually blue to the blue pet, because technically for flagging purposes they are no longer in the same guild, the blue pet won't be able to harm the green pet either. It is one of the many flagging quirks in the game, and you probably don't want to waste too much time looking for the logic in it.

As for keeping them separated, it is illegal to "block" mobiles etc. and have them be aggressive toward each other in a way that prevents them from being able to damage to each other. Again, you probably don't want to burn too many brain cells trying to understand why the above is perfectly acceptable, and this is illegal, that's just the way it is. This stems back to times when people would use crates in dungeons to block in monsters to make them easier to kill.

Ok, good enough, I'll accept that... Now, if they can't damage each other then does it follow that they won't gain Resist on each other?

The do gain resist. Resist isn't about damage anyway, it's about resisting curses, poison and paralysis in magery.
