Too much gold? A suggestion

Demand for resources, items, and rares is contributing to gold farming and trading.

Another cause is player frustration; with limited time we cannot get what we would like in game, or even the resources we need.

I have a suggestion that might help alleviate the problem.

Introducing a second type of currency similar to the currency in Facebook games.

This reward currency would be tied to specific UO accounts and could not be traded between accounts.

The currency could be purchased for cash--at low reasonable prices--more cheaply than gold from a gold trader.

Or obtained by turning in items (just like during Spring Cleaning). (Yes, I know I brought it up again.) Gold could not be turned in for reward points.

Or by defeating certain monsters, like Champ Spawns or Paragons.

The idea is that people could trade in the reward currency for special items and rares that are difficult to obtain. White scrolls, Medusa floor tiles, rubble, potted plants etc. The items would still be difficult to obtain. Holiday or seasonable items could be made available 2-3 months after the event is over.

Tie powerful items to characters so that they act like faction items. (Other people have suggested this before.)

Wow. One billion? Where do you store it all? Under the mattress?

*Looks around for the IDOC* :)

I am not even going to ask how you got that much gold, but I am jealous, especially when I think of all the mining I did to earn my first million. Of course spending the gold as soon as I got it didn't help.

Obviously I am not such a wiz at making money in UO that I thought I was.

Everyone has their own way of gaining that "i won" feeling in UO. Its one of the great things about the game.

Don't feel like you need to have one billion to be "important" in this game. You don't, and I'd go so far as to say that once you do reach the billion mark, you will realize you are far less "important" than you thought you'd be. Its pennies to the people that are in that top 1%.

I get the "I won" feeling when I conquer a monster that I haven't yet, or complete a new character, or make someone else happy whether it be with information I have to give, or helping a new character in game.

I've had a billion, I've had 0. And everywhere in between. Once you get to the billion mark, all the things that open up to you will make that billion dissapear just like the things you bought when you had your first million. And the things that open up that you can still not afford but can suddenly comprehend are just as out of reach as the things that cost 500mil did when you only had a few mil.

This is One of the most brilliant and well stated posts I have seen on Stratics. It rates in my top ten.

I totally agree with this and could not have said it better myself. Well Done.

I could sell 3 items and have over 500mil and then what big deal...its just a game and we dont own none of it...

Why is everyone worried about the unfairness of the other guys gold?

Just give us reasons to spend it.

Just worry about your game play and your gold, not mine or his or hers.

Just stop.

Make the game eat gold, that is fair. Stop creating ideas to get everyone more stuff because you don't have as much stuff as them.

There is nothing in this game you cant get. Nothing. Gold, rares or whatever.

If someone is too worried about having too much gold then perhaps they should start giving their gold away instead of getting someone else to give them a reason to do so. There are plenty of other players such as I who really don't have that much gold. I think I may have around 10mil across all characters.

It wasn't that long ago gold was increased on monsters across the board. Bags of Sending were reactivated. Gold was made to weight less. Gold at Champion Spawns was increased to 250k-300k.

If anything recent changes were made that increased the influx gold into the game. This is perhaps a good thing for new players. Why do people want gold sinks? What the hell for? Who the hell cares!:talktothehand:

For the most part gold just changes hands from one person to another.

Too many people here on stratics are far too concerned with what their neighbor is doing and trying to keep up with the Jones's.

What does that one book say? The one we have a dungeon named after?

Covetous?

I got to give you credit for a great post. Ive never had more than 30 or 40 million at one time myself so i dont know what it feels like to be rich in UO, but my favorite times are when i do something i havent done or beat something i havent beat. My most satisfying things to do though, is helping someone else achieve a goal that they havent, or to help a new player out. Again, great post.

Haha, just like real life my friend. Just watch CNN. Society says its unfair for some people to have so much, while others have so little. The truth is we cant all be rich. That would be a perfect world, but it will never happen. Instead of looking for ways to lift other people up from their troubles, our society looks for ways to tear down the people that do have wealth. Its backwards thinking in my opinion. I want everyone to have to "opportunity" to gain and possess wealth in RL and UO. Not everyone will have the know how or the drive to pull it off. The answer isnt taking away from the people that have it.

PS.. I dont have it in this game.. Yet

A CEO, a tea-bagger activist, and a union worker are all sitting at a table with a plate of twelve cookies in the center. The CEO takes the whole plate and leaves one cookie on the table where the plate was. He looks to the tea-bagger and says, "hey, that other guy, he wants your cookie."

There isn't a much of a debate that there is definately waaayyy too much gold in the economy.

The biggest problem that it causes is a class split like IRL. Whereas here, if you are a veteran player, or have been around for a little while - it's not too bad of a problem. If you are new - it is highly discouraging and makes this game seem unrealistic. By unrealistic, I mean who do you see selling any resources in "100" lots. It's all 1,000 - 10,000 or 60,000. I can say from experience, just recently, that scrolling up my one character cost 30 million gps. Granted - he can crank out 250k-500k an hour hunting. Limited timed players will shelf this game in a second - it's just not worth the time because of the funds needed to really enjoy this game with a strong character.

You could easily reset the currency problem in this game. Yes, it would **** off a ton of people, but I don't think any kind of major backlash would be occurring.

1. EA goes after the "RL Cash" seller websites that flagrantly have set up shop and sell the stuff. I mean c'mon, I can go to a dead shard and be a billionaire if I have the money.

2. Change the currency from Gps to something else and have a currency trade in for a 3/1 exhange or a 5/1 exchange. Rinse and repeat until the numbers are stable.

I don't particularly see a real plausible solution to the amount of gold in the game without effecting the "already" player base. It kills the game for new players though.

That would do nothing.
Take your characture, hunt, get stuff like tangle and other items and sell them.

Pretty easy.

You already showed how easy it is to make gold. Big deal. Spend 3 months building player.

Actually:
A CEO, a farmer, and a union worker are all sitting at a table with a plate of twelve cookies in the center. The union worker tells the CEO "As your partner I get half the cookies" (The CEO put up the Bakery, Oven and Ingrediants for the cookies, the union worker put up the labor to make them)

The CEO says "I'm not sure it's worth the investment I put in but I better give the farmer two cookies to pay what I owe for the ingredients"

The union worker then says "don't forget to pay two cookies for my healthcare and put aside two cookies for my retirement" As your partner I insist that you take care of my obligations.

You forgot the part where the CEO looted (stole, robbed, absconded with) the union workers pension just before he announces a massive lay-off, hid the money in an off-shore account to avoid taxes, hired a factory in china to do the work and raised the price on the farmer's tractor -all the while pancakes and moaning that he is unfairly taxed and that the unemployed are just lazy.

Ya, and that CEO was appointed by your buddy, our lack luster president. No? Just ask any GM worker who lost their pensions, etc. during the failed bailouts.

What about GE? They're all buddy buddy with Obama, in fact their CEO is on Obama's futile economic/jobs panel. How much did they pay in taxes last year? Oh ya.....$0, zilch , nada.

Corruption is not partisan, it's universal.
