Here's what I've gotten so far....

According to the game data, 50% of the BODs should be exceptional, between 70 & 99.9; at 100.0 and higher, the BODs should be 60% Exceptional, 40% normal....

preliminary items: I normally keep my hat BODs separate from my other cloth BODs, because they can be used to train arms lore.

Hat BODs: 120+ smalls - only 28 were Exceptional (between 25% & 30%)
Other Cloth BODs: 72 BODs - only 11 were exceptional (less than 15%!).

I'm currently undertaking a mass turn-in with a 120 Tailor; 147 new BODs will result, barring any accidental non-claiming of a BOD. I will sort these sometime Thursday (along with whatever BODs I get with the tailor in its normal runs).

Okay, here's the data, and it's a bit disturbing....

150 BODs from GM+ tailor.
Expected return for a GM+: 90 (60%) Exceptional, 60 (40%) Normal
ACTUAL results: 60 (40%) Exceptional, 90 (60%) Normal

This is of a sample of 150 BODs, of all types. Here is a breakdown of the sample

Type / Normal /Exceptional
Cloth / 53 / 34
Leather / 13 / 7
Spined / 14 / 10
Horned / 8 / 5
Barbed / 2 / 4
Totals / 90 / 60

Hypothesis based on sample: Something is definitely wrong with the system - possibly accidental inversion of the ratio of Exceptional to Normal.

Basara, do you have the normal/exceptional ratio for all skill level ranges, or a link where I can find that information? I'm slowly working on a few smiths and tailors on a couple of shards and may have some time this weekend to gather some more numbers for you at various ranges.

Are the normal/exceptional ratios different for LBODs versus SBODs? Are the normal/exceptional ratios supposed to be the same for smithing and tailoring? Have you noticed anything that seems amiss with smithing BODs?

The rates for normal/exceptional should be the same for LBODs & SBODs, as it is the same routine that determines it for both.

The normal/exceptional ratio is supposed to be... (both smith & tailor)
0-69.9: 100% normal
70-99.9: 50% normal, 50% exceptional
100.0-120: 40% normal, 60% exceptional

When the missing parentheses issue existed for smiths, there was an issue with smith BODs, but they disappeared totally with the fixes in publishes 48-50. Since publish 50, the Smith BOD numbers are running about dead on with expected values for the smalls (didn't distinguish between normal & exceptional when tracking my first 2100 smith BODs, but looking at my BOD books seems to bear it out)

Standard/Colored ratios....
Tailor:
0-69.9: 100% regular material (cloth, low-end leather)
70-120: 50% cloth, 50% leathers (not sure of exact breakdown; probably something like 40% leather, 30% spined, 20% horned, 10% barbed)

Smith:
0-69.9: 100% Iron
70-109.9: 50% Iron weapons, 25% iron armor, 25% colored armor
110.0-119.9: 50% Iron Weapons, 15% iron armor, 35% colored armor
120.0: 50% iron weapons, 5% iron armor, 45% colored armor.

I'd really like to get the real numbers for the tailoring breakdown by color.

Yep, that seems to indicate at least 50%/50% split for smith (instead of the 40%/60%, but within tolerences)....

The tailor numbers though, which are supposed to be 50%/50% (or 40%/60%), are closer to 65%/35%, which is WAY off...

Here's the latest update - looking more and more like confirmation of a real issue existing.

Totals after 425 BODs recieved

Type: Normal / Exceptional / Total / % Normal / % Exceptional
Cloth: 168 / 75 / 243 / 69.14% / 30.86%
Leather: 44 / 23 / 67 / 65.67% / 34.33%
Spined: 45 / 22 / 67 / 67.16% / 32.84%
Horned: 27 / 10 / 37 / 72.97% / 27.03%

Basara,

I just finished turning in some BODs with my Legendary Tailor, here are my results (in your same format):
Total # of BODs turned in = 2367 (2175 Smalls, 192 Large)

Type: Normal / Exceptional / Total / % Normal / % Exceptional
Cloth: 780 / 411 / 1191 / 65.5% / 34.5%
Leather: 262 / 111 / 373 / 70.2% / 29.8%
Spined: 250 / 121 / 371 / 67.4% / 32.6%
Horned: 108 / 70 / 178 / 60.7% / 39.3%
Barbed: 30 / 32 / 62 / 48.4% / 51.6%

Totals: 1430 / 745 / 2175 / 65.7% / 34.3% :(

I concur that the normal/exceptional ratio is closer to 65%/35%, than the claim of 40%/60%. More information is needed to properly evaluate the barbed leather percentages. Alone, my barbed leather data is too small of a sample size. I hope this data is helpfull.

Stayin Alive,

BG

Update:
Totals after 648 BODs recieved

Type: Normal / Exceptional / Total / % Normal / % Exceptional
Cloth: 251 / 112 / 363 / 69.15% / 30.85%
Leather: 75 / 32 / 107 / 70.09% / 29.91%
Spined: 68 / 37 / 105 / 64.76% / 35.24%
Horned: 35 / 15 / 50 / 70.00% / 30.00%
Barbed: 16 / 7 / 23 / 69.57% / 30.43%

Totals: 445 / 203 / 648 / 68.67% / 31.33%

Note: out of 214 new BODs, 9 were smalls for Barbed kit larges, or about 1 in 24 (about the number I've always averaged). Compare that to the rate Valorite (or even valorite & verite conbined) hammer smalls occur...

Adding my numbers to Barry's
Cloth 1031 / 523 / 1554 / 66.34% / 33.66%
Leather 337 / 143 / 480 / 70.21% / 29.79%
Spined 318 / 158 / 476 / 66.81% / 33.19%
Horned 143 / 85 / 228 / 62.72% / 37.28%
Barbed 46 / 39 / 85 / 54.12% / 45.88%

Totals: 1875 / 948 / 2823 / 66.42% / 33.58%

From this sample, we also get the numbers:
Cloth: 55.05%
Leather: 17.00%
Spined: 16.86%
Horned: 8.08%
Barbed: 3.01%

These numbers seem to be a bit off, as well, as one would expect something like
Cloth 50%
Leather 16.67%
Spined 16.67%
Horned 11.11%
Barbed 5.55%

is the chance of cloth really 55%, or is there another issue with the system as well?

As usual, the tailor numbers still reflect a 2 normal to 1 exceptional ratio, or worse (in favor of normal), instead of the 50%/50% ratio that is supposed to exist 70-GM, or the 40% normal/60% exceptional, that documentation from the introduction of the BOD system says is supposed to exist at 100-120 skill for tailor & smith. (note the smith numbers, from a 2500 BOD test in the spring, is showing 50/50 at 120 skill, but all other numbers are hitting within 0.02% of expected numbers - I wish the same could be said of tailoring)

Update for 15 December 2008:

I realized I had WAY too many smalls for CBD/Horned kit larges that I didn't have, so I filled a bunch of them (keeping up to 7 of each - 1 for each large BOD, and up to 3 each on my two BOD selling/storage vendors - I price all my vendor-stored BODs, for 2k to 5k each). I ended up with enough BODs that I filled a pack horse, and half-filled the beetle I was riding, with the cloth I got back (I use it to fill hat BODs with my archer to train Arms Lore, when I lack the wood to do heartwood quests, as well as to fill other cloth BODs that can't be filled with purchased items).

I have a question. I'm a little new to tailoring (at 96.6 right now so a ways to go). But anyway I've looked around on Stratics and UOGuide and I can't find anywhere (besides this post) that says there should be 50% exceptional BODs. Maybe 1/3 exception is correct/intended. Where did you get the 50/50 figure from?

The original materials for the introduction of the Tailor BODs.

Hanse on the Bulk Order Deeds This was the announcement of the Tailor system for Publish 16 (the Smith system had already been introduced, but was also expanded at the time). See line numbered 6. in the Tailor system description. Also note 1. in the Smith system; that bonus was defined as a 60/40 exceptional ratio for Exceptional/normal multiple times in the last 6 years by dev posts, though it appears that the bonus over the pre-GM 50/50 level may have been removed with the February BOD changes (intentionally or not).

Most of the discussion threads on the ratios of BOD types date from 4-5 years ago, and are nearly impossible to find via searches, if they even survived May's forum incident (where an inept 3rd party host for Stratics accidentally formatted OUR machine instead of some other customer's - data recovery from formatted drives is neither fun nor cheap).

Still the same unbalanced normal/exceptional rates, but there was an up-tick in horned & Barbed BODs (a very substantial one for the Barbed). out of 277 BODs, got 4 horned kit LBODs, and THIRTEEN Barbed kit small BODs. Anybody use feel a little irritated that about 1 in 20-25 Tailor BODs fits a Barbed Kit large, when the rate for the Smith equivalent smalls (verite & valorite hammers)is about 1 in 1000???

I asked a guildmate to turn in some BODs, once his tailor got to 100.0 (a much welcomed pause from training :sleep2:). I figured I would not be at any loss if he turned in a small sample size. Here are the normal/exceptional data from his turn-in.

Total Deeds: Normal/Ecceptional
50 Deeds: 40 Normal/ 10 Exceptional

I did not seperate them by material type, due to the small sample size. :sad4:

Lots of oddities this time. Abnormally low number of horned exceptionals, and out of NINE small BODs for the 20-count Normal Town Cryer set, SEVEN were the shirt! There's less than a 0.14% Chance of 7 or more, out of nine, being the same, if the chances are equal for the 4 cloth smalls for that 5-part large.

And the totals for this and the above post.

My opinion is this reduction from a half to a third is intentional to reduce the number of barbed runic kits since 6 of the 7 possible kit rewards come from exceptional large bods.

Actually, there are NOT 7 Barbed kit larges. There are EIGHTEEN larges that give barbed (9 if you solely go by counts, since there are two different larges for each count; male/female, or studded/bone for 5-part)

2 Spined 20 EX (6-part) larges
6 Horned EX (6-part) larges
6 Barbed EX (6-part) larges
2 Barbed 20 EX (5-part) larges
2 Barbed 20 Normal (6-part) larges

IF it was intentional, it would be nice to know - but the Devs have not said so, and EVERY official source, going back to the start of Tailor BODs, says 50/50, with a further exceptional bonus for GM tailors.

Yes of course. my mistake, was rushing and didn't remember to add the 2 types of armors etc.

Wasn't there some problem in the past where tailors were always waiting for the large BODs and smiths were always waiting for the smalls?

yeah - they fixed the problem with the smith BODs (it was a missing closing parenthesis in a formula). Tailors are STILL waiting for larges. But, as we both pointed out, that's not necessarily a bad thing, considering the relative commonality of the Barbed kit BODs.

Basara -

Thanks for taking the charge on this one. I've forwarded this thread and a personal email to Patrick/Leurocian on this as well and asked him to investigate/comment here.

He and I had a rather lengthy exchange last year where we got to the bottom of the mage armor leather armor issue and addressed many of the 'double roll' bugs in crafting.

Personally I'd like to see the whole system get overhauled to some sort of point system where you turn in bods and get points to spend on rewards. That way you can save up for the rewards you want. As it is - about 50% of bods have no value other than turn ins because the reward is pointless. +10 Tailor PS anyone? No one in their right mind would do a Spined 20 Bone Nm Large for a +10 scroll.

Ok, i'll pipe down now and wait for Patrick to have a look.

*crosses fingers*

Update for 15 May 2009:

Still trying to cycle out my excess CBD/Horned kit smalls.

My BOD sampling only, 120 Tailor - BODs from turn-in old /request new BOD process, plus the occasional 6-hourly pull by my only 120 tailor. This time, adding 180 BODs to the previous sample (and, by coincidence, changing the total number of BODs from 2579 to 2759)

Totals / types: Normal / Exceptional
1498 Cloth: 1031 (68.83%) / 467 (31.17%) (total normals up 0.74% from March)
453 Leather: 309 (68.21%) / 144 (31.79%) (total normals up 0.44%)
491 Spined: 331 (67.41%) / 160 (32.59%) (total normals only up 0.02%)
235 Horned: 168 (71.49%) / 67 (28.51%) (total normals down 0.4% - probably sdjusting from the abnormal amount of horned normals last time)
82 Barbed: 49 (59.76%) / 33 (41.24%) (too few to do comparison with only 3 this sample, and 82 overall)

2759 Total: 1888 / 871
Normal: 68.43%
Exceptional: 31.57%
Change from last sampling: +0.46% normal
(up 0.73% from two updates ago)

By material type:

Cloth: 54.295% (down)
Leather: 16.419% (up)
Spined: 17.796% (down)
Horned: 8.518% (up)
Barbed: 2.972% (down)

By Leather type (without cloth, but including footwear): 1261 BODs

Leather: 35.924% (up 0.101%)
Spined: 38.937% (down 0.112%)
Horned: 18.636% (up 0.215%)
Barbed: 6.503% (down 0.203%)

Update for 29 May 2009:

My BOD sampling only, 120 Tailor - BODs from turn-in old /request new BOD process, plus the occasional 6-hourly pull by my only 120 tailor.

This time, adding 141 BODs to the previous sample to bring it up to an even 2900.

Totals / types: Normal / Exceptional
1568 Cloth: 1085 (69.20%) / 483 (30.80%) (total normals up 1.11% from March, up 0.37% from last sample 2 weeks ago)
482 Leather: 328 (68.05%) / 154 (31.95%) (total normals up 0.28% since March, but actually showing a 0.16% drop from 2 weeks ago)
517 Spined: 352 (68.09%) / 160 (31.91%) (total normals only up 0.70% since March, with a whopping 0.68% increase since 2 weeks ago)
248 Horned: 176 (70.97%) / 72 (29.03%) (total normals down 0.92% from March - probably still adjusting from the abnormal amount of horned normals then. Drop was 0.52% this month)
85 Barbed: 52 (61.18%) / 33 (38.82%) (too few to do comparison with; only 3 this sample - is starting to approach the numbers for the other material types, as we get more in, though)

2900 Total: 1993 / 907
Normal: 68.72%
Exceptional: 31.28%
Change from last sampling: +0.29% normal
(up 1.02% from three updates ago)

By material type:

Cloth: 54.069% (down)
Leather: 16.621% (up)
Spined: 17.828% (up)
Horned: 8.552% (up)
Barbed: 2.931% (down)

By Leather type (without cloth, but including footwear): 1332 BODs

Leather: 36.186% (up 0.162%)
Spined: 38.814% (down 0.123%)
Horned: 18.619% (down 0.017%)
Barbed: 6.381% (down 0.122%)

Note that, by comparison, Smith BODs had ceased showing this much variability in anything under Valorite BODs, LONG before reaching 2500 total BODs (where I ended that sampling run). In fact, each Tailor BOD sample I do, alters most of the numbers more than the average departure from the expected numbers for the smith BODs, with a smaller total sample size. It's like comparing a pendulum (smith) to the Tacoma Narrows bridge (tailor) that occillated itself into pieces.

I just checked the play guide, and it doesn't specify what percentage of of tailoring BODs should be exceptional. Can you point me in the direction of the source that says they should be 50%?

Thanks!

April 3, 2002 - by some miracle this was still searchable on uo.com

Relevant line bolded in the quote

Hanse on the Bulk Order SystemApr 3 2002 2:39PM

This time around in my comments from the team, I’d like to talk more about the Bulk Order System and the additions/enhancements we’ve added to the system. On our development and crafting boards, I dropped hints as to what is coming in our next publish in regards to blacksmith rewards. I’ll try to sum up many of the hints that were spread out over all the threads.

A mistake we made with the blacksmith bulk orders was releasing rewards for the easy bulk deeds that were not very appealing to veterans, and the appealing rewards were almost too difficult to obtain for a veteran that is a casual player. While our new players do benefit from our lower rewards, veterans wanted something more substantial for their efforts. At the same time, some veterans felt that the low-end deeds became worthless after collecting a gob of durable shovels, pickaxes, and mining gloves.

Here are the enhancements we’ve posted on our boards, so far (for Publish 16), for Blacksmithy bulk orders:
 1. Currently, GM smiths have a bonus to get exceptional bulk order deeds. The exceptional bonus percentage will be significantly increased.
 2. Currently, GM smiths do not have a bonus to get colored bulk order deeds. A significant bonus will be added to get colored bulk order deeds (if the object selected is colorable).
 3. Weapon deeds are not appealing to veteran smiths, because they are not colored and give small rewards, while hardly giving any fame. Instead of increasing rewards for individual weapon deeds, we will be introducing five weapon large bulk orders that give new rewards (axes, swords, fencing, maces, and pole arms).
 4. As with #3, we will be adding seven new rewards to the system. Three of the rewards will be low-end rewards. These rewards have not been released yet. They will be available on Test Center when Publish 16 is available for testing.
 5. Any colored deed or weapon large bulk order will get an increased bonus to its rewards if it is exceptional (object reward, fame reward, and gold reward).
 6. A context menu option will display how many hours until your next deed will be available. Minutes are rounded up to the closest hour.
 7. Ancient smithy hammers were increased from 150 uses to 600. This is retroactive for hammers that were obtained prior to the increase.
 8. Runic hammers will have their color displayed as part of their description (i.e.: “a valorite runic hammer”).
 9. To prevent scams, all hammers will state how many charges they have left.
And now, a summary of Tailoring Bulk Orders…
 1. There will be 55 craftable Tailoring items in the system. These items do not include cross-skill items (such as house add-ons) and will not include oil cloths. This means 55 small bulk orders will be available as offers. (Hint: Tailors only have 51 craftable items, currently.)
 2. There will be 14 large bulk order deeds in the Tailoring system. All items that can be crafted will be included in at least one of the large bulk orders. This makes all the small bulk order deeds valuable.
 3. There will be 19 new colors of cloth (not currently available in the game as colors of cloth) as low to medium rewards. This will make all the low-end rewards valuable and usable. Only one color is not original and that is pale blue, but it is not available as a dye.
 4. There will be 44 different rewards (colors of rewards included) with the Tailoring bulk orders.
 5. As with Blacksmithy, we felt that in order to add depth and difficulty to the bulk order system, colored resources would be needed. We explored other avenues of creating depth in the system, but settled on three new types of colored leather. This means there will not be as many deeds in the system, so the system will be easier than Blacksmithy.
 6. GM tailors will receive the same bonus as GM blacksmiths in regards to getting exceptional and colored deeds, mentioned above.
 7. Exceptional quality deeds will yield a higher monetary value than normal deeds.
We have learned a lot from our previous release of Blacksmithy bulk orders, and hope you’ll enjoy both the new changes to Blacksmithy and the new Tailoring bulk order system!

Now that I’ve told you about the stuff most folks are probably interested in, I’ll go into the design steps required for making Tailoring bulk orders.

I was challenged by Evocare to make a bulk order system design. I had predicted that Carpentry would be the next obvious choice, but was surprised when Evocare decided that tailors would benefit from the system.

Tailoring does not have the depth or usage that Blacksmithy does. With only 51 items, it would have been very difficult to make a challenging and rewarding mini-game with the system. Different approaches were plotted out, but I still felt it would be too easy and not on par with the Blacksmithy bulk order system. It was decided that Tailoring needed to be changed to give it more depth.

This meant that the Tailoring system would need to undergo some modification and new additions. New leather resources and an as-of-yet undisclosed resource were created (the new resource is stackable). With a resource system much like that found in Blacksmithy, we now had a foundation to make a bulk order system that was on par with the Blacksmithy system.

After finishing the changes to tailoring itself, everything fell into place with the bulk order system. The rewards were culled from player posts on the boards, and a few twists were added (like the new colored cloth). Now, I’ll go rest my eyes from staring at spreadsheets, graphs, and localized text. :)
