To the Devs-- Did i miss something?

Well i have now been running around on this silly game since 97 and it really is beyond the point of asking but i have to anyways.

Did i miss something? Why is it that EA is at the point of ignoring a large player base so blatently abusing speedhack or XXXXX engine or whatever they are using? Apparently there must not be much pvping going on down there at EA because when i go to fight some of the people on UO they are moving so fast now you cant even see the animals legs move on the pet under them.

Is this what UO is going to be about? Apparently EA has done little to even think about this, i mean look at the new bestial suits, its like encouraging the run away tactic even more. And seriously whens the last time you even heard of someone getting in trouble for speed? Is that the answer? Tell everyone to download a 3rd party progam because you cant control it? I can see i love pvp in UO, but honestly with EA saying "now dont you use that" and then doing NOTHING to the people using it, you basically are now punishing the people who dont cheat.

I think I along with a pretty large (whats left) playerbase want to know what and or IF your going to do something ? It seems kind of silly to keep following the rules if your just going to keep ignoring them.

Tell you what you dont belive me? I can name a laundry list of players that on any given time, run twice as fast as everyone else. This isnt because they are on a 500 meg connection or even a faster connection or a faster computer, its all about what their running for software.

By the way, im sure this is about to get massive flamed by many of you less talented more software driven players, but lets face it, if we stuck almost all of you with me alone on a roof, odds are youd be help stucking in the end.

Unfortunately not everyone has the same internet speed. Uo caps the Max speed but not the slowest. I bet 90% of the people you think are cheating has a better internet connection then you do.

...

Better connection, better system, more optimized system and/or connection, use of external peripherals (gamepads, keyboards, etc).

I'm not saying that noone uses a Speed Hack program, but it has become quite a convenient excuse when someone loses in PvP... because NOONE ever loses fairly in PvP, there's ALWAYS some excuse why they lost.

Actually they COULD control the 3rd party external hack program issue at least somewhat... but all of the people addicted to UOA would whine endlessly because it would mean the loss of their client crutch.

1-Ping is a GREAT influence on movement speed. Don't believe me then make a new character on a *populated* shard on the opposite coast and try to run in the middle of people.

I ping 50 to east coast shards and 85 to west and i can tell a DRAMATIC difference.

2-Internet providers and service. It's pretty cut and dry the more you pay the better and faster the service is going to be. Even down to how many people are on your node will effect speed. If you have 40 people around on cable you're not going to be the fastest.

3- System setup. Obviously some people are going to pay a few thousand for their computer for the best of the best equip which will obviously be better at processing movement than some low end Wal-mart HP. You also can legally speed your system up by messing with the settings.

4: Some people are cutting their ping and hops down by using something i donno i can say here.

So it's not ALL just speedhacks. There's so many variables. Like was mentioned before server speed is capped. It's just faster than most people can achieve.

Really on my shard there is only one player who is blatantly speeding at "skippingly high" speeds. Most Pvprs on shard know to avoid contact buts its been around a month with no sign of him letting up.

Aside from this one player most speeders are not cranking up that dial to that level and I am fine with that. But this one player is well known and unpopular.

You know who you are!

It's not just ping. How well your comp handles UO is equally important.

My first year or two in UO I suffered lag and was slow. Then, at the same time, I got a cable connection and a new comp, not an elite gamers rig, just a very decent comp. I was really astounded at the difference. I still seem to move a lot faster than many other players even on my fourth comp since UO started. My ping isn't that great, but for some reason I've always been fast in game. I don't download and run a lot of other junk, and that may have something to do with it as well.

I haven't been involved in PvP for years, so I have no reason to use speed hacks, nor to try to mislead anyone.

Also, on the skipping thing. That could just as easily be your comp catching up with the game. You can see this in other games, as someone running changes direction but your comp shows them still running straight ahead for a second, then pops to where they really are. That's just the way MMOs work. Others are not where you think they are until they stop.

Anyone that runs two cleints at the same time can see this too. Run up near the other character on the other client, stop, and instantly switch to the other client. Even though you stopped the first character a second ago, you can see them stopping when you switch to the other.

My feeling's always have been thus.

Firstly there's so many false accusations of speed-hacking and other cheating that it's frightfully easy to disbelieve any claim thereof. I, for example, though my connection is mediocre at best, have been accused of speed-hacking.

Secondly, there's so many false accusations of speed-hacking and other cheating that it's frightfully easy to believe that going after cheaters in effect means ending the game. I doubt it's true but this is something the cheaters will sometimes float.

Thirdly I don't think it's as easy for them to tell, based on behavior cheating vs. some of the legitimate things that look like cheating. And even if they could tell easily if they saw it? Remember that before they see it, they get a few lines of text that basically says "so and so is speed hacking." Their reactions may well be informed by the dynamics noted in my first and second points. (Having said that, the most-recent round of bannings, very small-scale, to me suggests that they actually can tell based on behavior, it's just not easy.)

I've been accused of cheating just for stealing from players and managing to get away. Also for speed-hacking when being chased by someone who was obviously lagging. Then there was the time when I managed to run then hide leaving the person chasing nothing.

False accusations get tossed around too often it just gets ridiculous sometimes. Person loses then tries to rationalize that the only reason they lost was because the other cheated. I'm sure they may be correct on a rare occasion but you shoot enough bullets you're bound to hit something sooner or later.

If you play the CC and have UOA, use the program to show your char as a chicken or as an orc (do NOT use polymorph). They have FAR less animations than a player and will take a bit of load off your system.

Best thing of all, its not cheating.

What about the blatant lack of testing of new skills/items/features before they're implemented??? THEN half ass fixing things 1-2 years later... everything's out of wack!

You know I sometimes wonder if real cheaters spread false accusations of cheating specifically because the false accusations create a smoke screen for them.

That's probably too conspiratorial for this stuff though, I guess.

Intended or not, though, that has been the effect. "Everyone" cheats, so why focus on me?

I have never used any hack nor will I but have been accused due to a good connection(on certain days). I can run past the speeders unless they crank it. LOTS use it to make the game more fun, but other use it to FIX game issues. OR compete. Sadly due to the lack of development certain things are needed(not for me..I like it as is ).

What devs need to fix in player preferential treatments...ie: on Baja there is the stupidest table set stuck in Luna due to a player calling in a request to his buddy to have it there. FIX THIS junk first? Yes show one player this treatment all should get it on ALL shards.

Since I switched to the EC, I never had any issues keeping up with anybody. Often I am accused of speedhacking.

So for me, EC + a good connection (ping<40) solved all problems.

Galen i have personally run you down to death more than a few times on GL, and i can say its pretty obvious your fast but not cheating.

If you really cant tell by this time in the game who has a speeder running then odds are you are just a casual pvper.

I feel sorry for you people thinking that its the EC.....LOL

Merion says he can keep up with anyone? LOl on what shard? Origin? lol go you

Try a real shard and i will show you a real speeder.
Go start pvping on atl and tell me no ones got a speeder on.

As my signature states, I play Drachenfels.

And yes, I have seen speeders and I know one if I see one. Maybe we're just lucky and everybody is honest over here, but I can only say what I experienced - since playing EC I never lost someone who wasn't playing EC himself.
