Hello,

I've been dealing with quite a few trades lately that required the services of a broker. I'm curious to know how the well known brokers got into the trade.. How did you put yourself out there and gain the trust of the community to broker items and gold from small amounts to very large amounts and high end items?

Its something that interests me just to know as well as to ponder trying to make a name for myself or help someone interested as well.

Share your journey and advice you well known brokers, and thank you for your honest and upstanding contribution to the UO community! So many aspects of the game would be treacherous without you.

Most of these guys that broker have been around for a loooong time and come with a ton of references from well known collectors. that kind of trust takes awhile to build. If most of these big time collectors trust you enough to do deals without brokers or trust you to move very high end items for them from shard to shard, you are getting somewhere. I have played UO for a long time, but only got in to collecting items few years ago. Over these past few years I have earned and showed trust in many players who frequent these forums. A big thanks to all the people who have dealt with me over the years and have showed that same trust and respect, looking forward to many more.

I'm new to the rares side of the game but from my view I would only use a broker who has a bunch of references from people I trust, or people I deal with regularly

In my opinion, I doubt most brokers start off actively seeking to become a broker anymore. At one time during the Golden Age of UO, the first 10 years, this might have been different because it was actually somewhat profitable to be a broker. This is not the case anymore. I started actively buying and selling in UO back in 2002. Around 2005, I had developed a reputation as someone trustworthy enough to handle trades not just worth billions, but thousands of dollars. I have handled transactions as high as $25,000.00 and 27 billion gold. I broker at least 1 - 5 trades a day, and I make many great friends along the way.

For me, being a broker is a higher calling, because I have been scammed out of billions of gold, and know what that feels like. It makes you want to quit the game, and I am positive many have quit the game over smaller amounts. Its a shame there isn't a better system like an auction house that can guarantee safety. Until such time I will continue to dedicate my spare time towards helping others keep UO a safe game to play.

This is a little off topic but I miss Tradespot during its prime. I browsed it multiple times a day and you knew that if they were an official TS broker, then you were in good hands.

Nails is an awesome broker. I just used him to broker a very large deal for me. I would recommend him to everyone.

I miss Tradespot as well. I have many fond memories of the other staff there. I remember spending a lot of time investigating scammers and helping to maintain that hacker/scammer ICQ list. I remember one guy was so furious at being put on the list for being naughty that he started dropping inappropriate porn images on the forums. We had to babysit the forums constantly to keep it clean... well we also traced his IP and did some detective work. As I recall it turns out he posted a few of those images from his work as a secretary in a law firm. As I recall, Cent contacted the boss and the naughty fella was promptly removed from his position. He threatened to sue the staff and Centurio gave him the county he'd have to file in and I think a map to the courthouse. To the best of my knowledge he never did. Centurio was awesome and really was my mentor when it came to brokering. I don't advertise these days because I'm not on as much as I used to be when I ran PTC on Pacific. I do still help folks out from time to time when they contact me. I've never charged, even back then, for anything that was done due to a safety issue. I hate hearing about folks getting scammed especially when it is something that could have been prevented. I would love to see our community (the rares community), set up to the plate and help educate the public on how to protect themselves and be safe.

Tradespot was amazing, I think I wore out more then one F5 button on it back in the day. I never needed a broker back then, in fact I was never wealthy in UO really until semi-recently and decided to pick up the hobby as well as the investment of rares collecting... Using brokers frequently just got me thinking about how almost, well revered some of them are in their brokering. I personally used Nabin quite a few times recently and he is always consistent and makes the whole process smooth as butter.

As thankful and respectful as I am to brokers its a shame they have to exist. I can only imagine what a human being that would steal an item from a fellow human being in a video game would be like irl... If you can't maintain the self respect, respect for your fellow man and honesty required not to steal friggin' pixels I would hate to see a serious matter resting in your hands. Regardless of "Its just a game" we all invest time in UO and it does mean something to us, losing something is rock bottom in UO and in the grand scheme of life doesn't hold much weight, it still holds enough to break our spirits in the game, and probably in our faith in humanity on some scale. You can't live your life one way and conduct yourself differently in a game, you are who you are and stand for what you stand for.

Sorry for the rant, I guess the dissension of trust in many facets of life just.... well... sucks and is simply sickening.

Anyways, I sincerely appreciate the people that have trusted me in trades, be it with slither sales and the like to a recent purchase I made of an Enhanced tome of necromantic ensourclemnt on ATL, although on the latter I couldn't help but type in caps "HAHAHA SCAMMED!" as I payed in full by buying items off the players vendor.. it was kind of cruel but my sense of humor might just be in left field at times. Overall I guess what I'm saying is respect your brokers, they worked their asses off or at least the calender off to give us the service they give us for free or next to nothing in which they could greatly profit in UO as well as real life if they were not such honest people.

The only broker I trust is Nails.
He helps alot, he always find a buyer/seller when I ask him, and the best thing, he never ask for anything in return.
I highly recommend using Nails.

I've never made a purchase within UO that has required a broker. How the process work? Say for example I'm buying an item for 500m, do I just bag up the cash and give to the broker, or are vendors involved somehow?

I hope that with whatever the dev's are doing in regards UO's currency will allow greater amounts of gold or whatever to be exchanged safely for high value purchases.

Trust

It is the basic common denominator of a successful trade and interaction with your community.

Obviously we base this on reputation, experience, and how we have seen a player interact with the community.

When I am asked to broker a deal, I review what I know about each individual.

If I can reassure each of them that the other is just fine to deal with and I am confident that there will be no trouble, I prefer to see them work directly with each other instead of brokering the deal myself.

I stay in the loop till I hear "Wow everything went great" then I congratulate the two and move on.

This is a solid method in my opinion for building community.

What have I always charged for Brokering? A simple request to pay it forward someday at some point.

My suggestion would be a positive trade feedback thread. Maybe in the archive section or a stick above where one could post I traded with such and such and everything went well thank you!

This would need to be just for positive feedback. A sample would look something like this.

Comments - David purchased several coins on my vendor to pay for the castle and provided me with a virtue suit set. I in turned handed him the Castle. Things went very smooth after I figured out how to price a coin for 150 mil. Thanks David for the smooth trade.

I've used Decadence as well. She's brokered 1bil+ deals for me. Always fast, courteous and professional. I used anyone else in a long time.

I've been around quite a while myself and people just made me into a brooker I never really asked to be. They saw I dealt with high end items and asked if I could help brookering trades, or duels etc Which I didnt mind doing so I just do it for free too help out any community on servers. It doesn't take very long to help 2 people finish a deal so I began doing it when asked.

well , i offer and do a lot of brokering service on EU, for free. I do it fair, quick and totally safe hehe.

Have done castles, rares and a lot things. There were some problems with brokering on EU with some scam ( the brokers where scammed, not the client), so i started to do it because that got me mad, and the system i use is 100% safe of scam hehe.

So, if anyone need a brokering service on EU, dont doubt to ask for me , ill do it gladly
