Yep we can leave, but my wife being "unknowledgeable" in certain things had to put up with hours of gutter language and 4 letter words you wouldt believe until i fixed it for her. Anyway we should't have to leave, these "mature" folk that know all the clever vocabulary should be banned from any channel if they can keep to the roc.

Is cursing still against the TOS, or ROC ? I thought i had read a while ago that due to the rating on the game, the tos reguarding this had been changed?
I could be wrong or have misunderstood however.
I dont like the convo's that go on in new chat channels at all, I think its often very immature, and pointless, so I too opt to keep it closed 90% of the time....tho the dirty words, or mature content dont bother ME at all.
Its mostly the name calling, and $hit talking that goes on and on and on with a type of snowball effect in most cases.
Maybe it would be a start to prevent anyone in fel from talking on tram, luna, ect. general channels. and restrict them to a fel channel.
In my several hours of play since the new chat system has come out iv only rolled my eyes, or closed the chat because of pvp'ers talking, or item spamming.

Maybe we need a server for kids and wifes who can't handle a few bad words, then we can bring the rest of the servers back to Mature.
I miss when you did not get banned for certain words ingame. It's just words and there is a ingame filter for this.
I'm female too but as I always had worked in male jobs, this words are just words.

Be a little understanding, some people don't like to listen to the same type of $hit you do and why should they have to? They are here to enjoy the game and its hard to when you have a bunch of 12 year olds talking $hit to each other for hours on end. Luckily I am on a low population shard so I haven't had to deal with this. It should have a built in filter so you don't have to leave the chat. If you want to talk $hit then start your own channel and do it there.
I agree 100% with you on this one. I will wait to see how it all works once it is live a nd fully implemented into the game, but for now and I assume the foreseeable future I will do as you do and not use the system save for certain occasions.

The OP is specifically referring to the useless trash talking that takes place on Pacific. It's aimed at the same 2 players, and goes on for most of the day. While some of it can be entertaining, it does get old after a few minutes.

I don`t think the chat needs a mod to baby sit the ones who need to eat some soap.
I don`t agree with profanity ingame,since you don`t know who your talking to. I mean you can be talkin like a trucker/sailor to a 5 year old. How would that make you feel IRL? Standing there being an idiot in front of a kid,chances are...you wouldn`t do it. To say there is always the filter option isn`t really an option since even a kid can turn it off.

I do not talk $hit and I'm sure not a 12 years kid. A build in filter would do as long I can disable it on my client.
I had heard more immature talk in Trammel than on Siege so it do not have to do with PvP at all.
Guess what....there's still some real ladies out there ok? Not all women lug freight, drive trucks or chew cud.
It's 2009, very correct, you would think more so-called adults would behave in a mature manner, instead of the reckless opposite.
I wear a hardhat, yet don't "need" to prove myself by using vulgarity, I grew out of that.

if your server has the numbers, make a chat channel for your friends..or for your crafter communities or whatever. On siege I find it easy enough to not pay attention to chat when I am not in the mood since it scrolls by so fast with all the things you pass walking around. Its not really useful for me unless we can filter out things in our journal or have a display for chat only.
If it gets too annoying with the PvPers, just lie and say something to your mining buddies about where you all gathered. If your good you can make it sound like a dropped tell. Not that I would ever do this...

I can deal with the foul language, but the racial slurs I saw last night before I thought to leave the channel really bothered me.
I work alot, and UO is usually my way to relax. I dont need all that racist garbage gettin me all wound up when all I want to do is unwind, especially when I'm paying for it.

I havent tried this and I guess I need to, because I know exactly what Aaron and Connor are talking about on Pacific, but when You ignore someone in game, wouldnt you ignore them over chat too??? And if not, how come? We need to be able to put certain ppl on ignore.

I'm a woman too but I guess I'm old fashioned. My parents raised me to have some class and filling up a chat with foul language isn't very classy in my opinion. So far *all* of the foul language I've seen in chat has been from pvp trash talk. A few times some players suggested that the pvpers take it over to the Felucca channel, but the pvpers didn't like it too much. Honestly I don't care if someone wants to beat his/her chest to express their pvp prowess, but I do draw the line at personal/real life insults and racist comments. That being said, I haven't seen anything too severe on my shard and hopefully it stays that way. If players can't act appropriately, they probably risk being banned or having tons of restrictions put on the chat system.
Everyone should bear in mind that we are between patch and publish. We only have part of the finished item. We should wait and see how it works when it's all put together.

I'm just wondering why this feature is "automatic" on log in. It should be an "opt in" feature, not one where I have to "opt out" every time I log in.
Most of the filth I've witnessed on the chat looks like 10 year olds anyway - if you can't spell it, don't use it

Its not the language Freja. Its the worthless banter of "your mom is like Mcdonalds... over a billion served...(hehe - giggle giggle)" Dang its not even fresh dribble. Or good dribble. Or entertaining dribble. Its just bad Schtick.
But its endless trashy clutter that really doesnt belong on the system. Well atleast on certain chat areas. They can create a Your Momma area.
They need to clean it up some how.

The trouble with terms like "lady" is you buy into the idea that some women are inherently better than others. There's no reason why a woman driving a truck or digging a ditch has any less value than one that styles hair or sells cosmetics. And to attribute bovinity, implying dull wit and compliance, to a woman who does as she wishes rather than as she is expected is a misappropriation.
Vulgarity goes far beyond the use of profanity. It often hides in plain sight, behind a façade of convention and conservatism.
I believe the same rules count in the chat as in the rest of the game so racial talk, harrassing, speak about cheating and stuff like that is not allowed.
You get an uniqui char number and an unique char name too so lets see if we not get the options to report a player in the chat when we get the client patch.

Some of it is probably just the newness of the thing. That always brings the kids who want attention out of the woodwork. It'll settle down. And we really don't know yet what tools will be in place for customizing things.
Personally I'd like to be able to ignore people, I would not like the only solution be to get my own room. I don't want to go to a party then have to go to the bedroom to hang out with a couple people I like. Hrm that sounded a little bad.
Anyways, it's been great on Baja. I'm not in a guild and haven't been in a while, I use ICQ but I don't do vent or guild chat so I miss out sometimes on the group banter, and it's fun seeing people go back and forth. Haven't seen any profanity or trash talking at all.
I think this could be a really good thing for the game. A big issue right now is finding groups and seeing where people are to hang out (if you are into that kind of thing). Chat can really bridge the gap that exists between being a new player and not knowing anyone to having friends in a lot of different areas. It will just make it easier to get to know people and have group fun, ask questions etc.
And think of it from the customer service end. How many people are now going to ask questions in chat first instead of paging a GM? Think about all the GM calls where the answer ends up being "change your foundation style to reset teleporters" or "honor something far away to reset your lockdown cursor". UO players have a wealth of knowledge and they are now a resource for each other. And I'm happy with that, anything that leads to greater game satisfaction and more subs is a good thing, IMO.

We are working on a feature to allow you to ignore other players in the chat channels. We will release it as soon as it is ready.
Keep in mind, you can petition on players in chat if they are violating the TOS. There is a new way to target players in the harassment petition system for global chat.

Great! That will be nice and would stop a lot of the problems.
I would think people would behave, but I guess not. On Pacific and Origin, the EMs even joined in chat, so the fact people wouldnt behave even after knowing that was a little bit of a surprise.
Speaking of which, why are the EMs allowed to join chat? I am not asking because its a bad thing, but uhm its kind of weird having them listen in.

1. Prevent 15 day trial accounts from talking over a whisper.
2. Prevent 15 day trial accounts from writing on runes.
3. Prevent 15 day trial accounts from holding books.
4. Prevent 15 day trail accounts from naming beasts.
5. Prevent 15 day trail accounts from dropping runes. They can only go to trash can.
7. Limit the amount of time 15 day trial account can speak. Normal game play.
8. Auto jail the guy when his site is spammed in any order.
9. Tag books to the writers and ban their accounts.
10. Require trail accounts to have either a credit card, email address, phone number, address.... something that can be tracked.
If this were a footbal game it would be EA 0 SPAMMER 2345 and your still in the first quarter. Its embarrassing.

The chat system should be used correctly too, if you want to talk to your Roleplay friends, use the Roleplay Chat, if you want to trade use the Trade Chat.

Well perhaps one could say what they are selling, then if anyone is interested, to change to the Trade Chat to discuss it, simple.

That is interesting to know. It sounds like all "accounts" have been issued a "chat ID." I wonder if this ID will continue to be visible once the update is live? I ask because I am sure there will be people upset that they can not disassociate their main from their alts. Makes no nevermind to me, but I present the same attitude and etiquette no matter which character I am playing.
We've got an interesting problem on Atlantic. We have a chat channel terrorist. He spams his site. Personally, I don't care what he says for the most part I'm usually busy doing something. But, if he doesn't get enough hits on his site he tells us if enough of us don't visit his site in a certain period of time he will spam the channel completely. Then he does...
He just sets something to spam ceaselessly. It totally makes playing with the channel on impossible since it covers up a large part of your screen and theres nothing you can do but leave chat.
There's GOT to be something that can be done about someone that threatens you and then totally disrupts many peoples game experience. This is the best harrassment I've ever seen. There's nothing at all we can do about it, and he knows it. He thinks its funny.

I wish I knew how he was doing that.. not for my own purposes, but when I tried to use control Q to repeat something I had said in chat, it didnt work. So I assumed that repeating something or spamming wouldnt work at all.
I hate having the immature kids/adults ruining the chat in the Tram channel. I had to go to the Fel channel with some friends who all play in Tram because the pvp'ers were name calling etc, over and over again. If they would just go to the Fel channel and leave the Tram channel for Trammies or non dramma people, imho it would be all good. I hate to be unable to talk to people not in my alliance because of this trash talk from people in Fel.

This is always going to be the case, and its not really about Fel/Tram. Its about one group's desire for order and the other's vicious apetite for chaos. The way I see it UO has not changed from its beginnings in that respect. Every attempt to impose order on those that despise it has failed and probably always will.

Turn on your profanity filter. Its not that hard to do. The game comes with one built in. It also has an Ignore list.

i'm sure it's just a coincidence.
pvping is for the immature. when you grow up you realize it's better to work with people than against them. (growing up is a maturity thing, so don't tell me you're 35).

PvPing is for the immature?? I think you need to rethink that. I am over 30, I PvP, and minus a few BS remarks here and there, I wouldnt count myself as being one of the immature.

...it's statements like that that keep the ridiculous tram/fel arguments going. I know I've seen even more immature people in tram who refuse to go to fel. Now don't get me wrong, I've also seen immature people in fel as well. My point is simply immature people are ALL OVER UO, not just fel pvp. But statements like your own in stereotyping all pvpers is immature in itself. Congrats.

Is there a way for us to stay perma logged off of chat though? It seems like no matter what I do, my characters are still automatically logged right back into the stupid General -Trammel chat when I log out and relog back into UO. IS there a way to stay perma logged off? If so, someone... anyone... please kindly clue me in.

There sure will be. Once the server portion of this update makes it off of TC1 and out to the production shards it will maintain your choice, so once you leave you will stay out of the chat system until you choose to join another channel. Because our shards have not received the update the new chat system in the client is not communicating properly with the old chat system that is still live on the servers. We were all warned in the patch notes that there will be oddities with the system until the update is complete. Also a few Mythic folks have posted multiple comments on this so for now we have to "leave" each time we login. A pain no doubt, but a temporary one.

The search feature on the Stratics board earlier when I had posted kept failing in loading my search results, so I couldn't find a quick answer on "how to shut off global chat"!
So, I'll try not to be too negaive about this, because I know the devs created the global chat out of good intentions....
1.) I'm SO looking forward to being able to ignore specific players in global chat! Specifically, those who are already currently on my ignore list....
2.) I'll most likely give the global chat a fair try as soon as #1 gets implemented. For now though, I'm going to manually log myself into a NO CHAT room or another custom made chat room for some PEACE & QUIET! ^___^
3.) I am going to find a way to HUG that perma log out button as soon as we get it from the devs...!!
