Can someone tell me how to run a trace route to Pacific?

The lag on this game is getting to be intolerable. And yes I'm on Comcast and no I don't care whether it's EA, Comcast or someone else's fault. I've only been back for 3 weeks and I'm seriously considering moving to something else because I don't miss the days of playing on a 56k.

Pretty much the same here, for a few days. Just like dialup...constant disconnects, followed by some synchronization message usually, meaning you cant just log back in real quick, you have to completely close the client down. Only UO, its not the whole internet thing, cause icq and IE and Pandora never stop working, the kids watching netflix never stops, online console gaming keeps going...

This type of lag has been going on for me and guildmates for 2-3 months. I've made 2 threads about it never got a response. Right now I'm pinging 300 to a shard i should be pinging 30 to due to ALTER.NET. Something needs to be done...

Here is a image of a traffic jam. Although you start seeing the delays here, the CAUSE of the delay could be 5 miles up the road where all lanes merge into a single just lane, because the city decided it is cheaper to maintain and operate a single lane instead four lanes to save money.

Somebody should reopen up the lanes.

So far it seems isolated to Atlantic. I've been on Pac all day today and daily all this past two weeks. No crashes just the usual extreme lagginess during primetime. I try to get all my game time in before 6pm.

Could it be that where you are getting the 100% packet loss, is the place where the problem is? Is this at the point where internet traffic enters EA's network?

If you do an internet search you can see that Alter.net has been having the same issues off and on for the past couple years at least. And it seems that it usually goes on for months at a time. I found posts from other games and other types of sites that all ask about latency and packet loss from Alter.net. It has been reported to them, but I am not sure if they care, and I don't really know if there is anything else that can be done other than complaining to Alter.net/MCI/Verizon.

Yup, for months & months...
I have watched event after event pass by and there was just no way I could be involved.
The worst was the mage duels EM event.
Can anyone guess what it's like trying to even play a mage now a days let alone duel?
It goes like this, curse wait 5 seconds like your in protection but worse... Then you see words of power then you try to cast a spell but your still casting curse.

Long story short I can't pvp anymore because of the lag. What's UO without the pvp?!!?!?!?!

It's not only comcast, but the majority of people posting here on stratics seem to have comcast as their current ISP.

Me, and two friends play UO quite often almost every day, except of course when its laggy, as the main thing we enjoy in UO is pretty much ONLY PVP, lag is the game-breaker for us and many others that play UO for its Pvp...

however 1/3 of us is Not using Comcast or Verizon, and still suffers from the same lag issue with a different cable company, though the problem still seems to be once it reaches Alter.net... its completely unplayable, regardless who is at fault It needs to be FIXED ASAP

Though this problem has occurred in the past, it's never lasted this long and was usually fixed within a week, its been going on 2-3+ months during prime time on most eastern shards, as of today it seems to have gotten worse and for a longer period of time.

I noticed it being laggy as !@#$ since 5pm Est, and is still at 9:40 Est too laggy to do almost ANYTHING in UO (it took me 10 minutes of stutter-stepping from umbra bank to umbra smith and back to tailor to collect BODs, so i could log off) It's rediculous that we have to deal with this #$!% at all, and considering it's affecting more than a handful of people, something like this should have been dealt with by now.

EA is not even in the same state as where the bottle neck is happening, its happening near Kansas City, and because of the way internet traffic is routed you could be in Florida and still get routed through this area!

there are some visual trace route programs out there that will show you this if you want to look for them!

Could ea be having server problems sure! but everyone of the traceroutes I have seen posted are all the same area!!

And just because you can play other games just fine means nothing because those servers are located in different areas

I seem to be getting routed the same way as everyone else, and as soon as it hits *.NYC4.ALTER.NET it immediately jumps from ~40ms to ~400ms.

I agree that this isn't specifically an EA/Mythic issue. I have ran about a dozen trace routes and it's always the same. The 'lag spike' happens two hops before it gets to the UO servers.

Yes large companies like EA have something called an SLA. We as individual customers of an ISP have very little influence over outages such as this since 99.9% of everything else on the internet is accessible. All I'm saying is again, the lack of communication from EA is going to be their downfall. A message or even a tweet saying "guys we are aware of the issues and are doing everything within our power to resolve it." that would go a long way.

So we've eliminated all other possibilities and tracked it to Alter.net.

My trace routes from Colorado to Catskills show the same bottleneck as well.

So for us older guys can someone explain exactly what alter.net is?

I can hardly move on Atlantic and it takes a second or 2 before an action like opening a rune book actually happens--I usually don't have too many problems with lag, but this is bad. Feels worse than old dialup!

Electronic Arts probably has some muscle in this regard but who knows what will happen.

If they are paying $200,000/yr for a high service level connection then that's $200,000/yr of pressure they can exert to get the problem fixed. If they are paying $5,000/yr for a crappy connection, then there isnt much in terms of pressure that they can exert.
