I've been away from the game for a few months. I'm bored of my old shard and I'm thinking of giving Siege a try, as an alternative to cancelling my account for good. I'll be starting with nothing and aiming to build a character who can join in with everything the shard has to offe

Does anyone have any advice for fun templates for newcomers to the shard? I'm assuming things are a little different here due to the non-reliance on items. I'm leaning towards a crafter of some sort and probably a dexxer.

Any help appreciated

Welcome, I too am a returned player from about 8 years ago... I choose siege because it is the only shard that plays the way the game designers planned for it to.
I'm not to great at pvp, but recognize it's necessity to balance the intrigue of long term interest , as to your question, I only have one account and solely play siege, so magery was a bit of a necessity for me as it offers the only means of speedy travel, albeit an excellent hub system is on our shard, many hubs are linked together now. You should speak with Tanager of noob. And or magic hands of uwsp..

Welcome on our forum (and hope on our shard )... Many people tried this shard for the same reason as your and here they find a new house ... For dexxer i can't help you much because i always played mage char. Instead for crafter i can hint you this kind of template (that is the basic crafter template for most of things):
Blacksmith and Tailor 120
Mining 100 (so you have ingots for tinkering and blacksmith and also to sell to make some money)
Arms Lore 100 (for the bonus on resistences)
Tinkering 100
Magery 80 (so you can gate because here recall or journey don't work)
for the last skills you can choice
or
carpentry, fletching, (for carpentry or fletching you'll need to buy board without lumberjack but i think you can sell ingots and with the gold earn you can buy boards)
or
imbuing (if you choice imbuing you can put 60 magery and increase it with jewels so you can get 120 in imbuing)

I'm leader of UWSP Guild that is a crafter guild and i'll be happy to help you .. Anyway before join a guild i hint you to ask for Tanager or any emissary of NOOB guild that is guild created for new people or returning player. You can join this guild for a month and in the meanwhile understand well how Siege Perilous works .

If you wanna be a dexxer you might want to create a sampire. Rather easy gold with relatively cheap suits. You can get everywhere you need to go to with public teleporters and hubs. I strongly recommend to have imbuing on a soulstone and an empty soulstone to switch skills.

Don't even remember who it was that killed my T Hunter, LOL they left my suit maybe 500k-600k and took my shovel and sextant! I cried in GC about that shovel and sextant for 2 days Just fer fun

On the other topic welcome remember the golden rule and Siege is fun. If you can't afford to lose it DON'T WEAR IT OR CARRY IT Agree with Max Sampire is a good start up template and a Disco Mystic mage is a good one to for bringing home the gold. Both you can get going with cheap suits. Also As said soul stones are your best friend and a mythic token is worth investing in just to get 5 core skills to 90.

You will be use full in most spawns with that set up and can take down a lot of stuff solo.

if you want to go dexer, you could try the following archer template..

120 archery
120 tacs
100 anat
100 necro
105 chiv (95)
120 bushido
55 focus

get some slayer bows and you are all set to solo some spawns or two man some of the harder ones.

I would also recommend tailor/arms lore/imbuing on stones. I would also recommend a mythic token plus 3 soul stones; it will set you back 55 bucks but imo it well worth it to be able to roll out immediately.
I would use the mythic token to get 90 bush/90 chiv/90 archery/90 tacs/90 necro. If you do not want to lay out money for the mythic token id still suggest getting the soulstones.

My favorite dexxer template has always been:

120 Fencing
100 Nox
120 Parry
100 Necro
100 Med
100 SS

Top it off with what ever compliment skill you prefer.. resist, focus, etc.

I did the same thing... siege was the last swing at uo and omg I am happy everyday I log in. Yes I do die and so far I have only been dry looted the day I started. They even took my robe and shovel and the 1000 gold the game starts you with. The guy said welcome to siege and left me dead... but that was a great way to start. I know that sound funny but it can only get better from there right? Now I love what I have going for me and try to craft as much as I can. The ROT timer was weird at first but omg I love that too. Amazing with the SOAs and not wasting time gaining my skills. I know when each gain will be next and plan accordingly.

First - welcome to Siege!

I couldn't resist chiming in with a comment on the fun of NUDITY!

Most basic farming can be done without gear, whether you go caster or dexxer rout. My personal favorite is mage with a Siege-Blessed mage weapon, spellweaving, meditation, chivalry, resisting spells, and hiding (to break a target lock). Cheap LRC when I am being lazy. Factor in virtue abilities. Nope, you're not gonna be taking down peerless bosses in your birthday suit, but you sure can have a lot of fun without any fear of anything

GO NUDITY!

Oh yeah, and if you do wanna join NOOB just shoot me a PM or ask in General Chat for an emissary and we can meet up in game to discuss the guild guidelines. I've been slacking lately, but the guild's website is noob.gamerlaunch.com if you want a summary. Just keep in mind this nekked thing is what you'd have to put up with for a month!

LOL generally I agree until 6 people come along to Pigeon Chit Heights in less than 30 minutes checking out the Mongbat training mining up. Only 3 were GIL though LOL I made a Macro that says "Hello, and no I am NOT Scripting!"

They make getting back to your body for your gear a lot easier after a monster has done your hide in.

If I was brand new start with chiv and bushido and put the rest into necro. I would also train some lumber and fletching to make my own arrows initially. I'd purchase a cheap lrc suit for training necro, hunt ettins, orcs etc, and use the gold to tith as much as I could. I would probably just use gm barbed leather sets until I got my skills up some, then up grade to one of Tina's stam suits. Ultimately you want a stam suit with 95 fire and all 70s with 40 lmc at the very least. Stam, dex, di, and ssi are what you want most with this template. I would also probably use bandage healing initially just to help raise anat. I pretty much did it this way when I returned to the game on Catskills last year. I actually opted for healing/resists instead of bush/necro. The bush is mainly for honor bonus damage which I seem to get the same with a slayer weapon, eoo, tacs, anat, and 100 di. I kind of liked having healing so I could cure posion easier and res people. I would not even consider joining a guild and do champs etc with others until I could res the fallen. Once your chiv is gm you can noble sacrifice though. The necro is purely for vamp form which you can not get until you have 99 necro. I also like to make the char an elf as the extra 20 mana is nice. You could go garg and use throwing which would eliminate the need for arrows.

My tamer/bard has no hiding or stealth, and very few soulstones.
My miner does have stealth and hiding, but those are remaining on soulstones more and more nowadays.
