I've seen a lot of great posts about skill building, kill tactics, item usage, etc., but few on how to leave the game for a while.

I'm at 115 mths and thinking of not playing for awhile, maybe forever, but 'just in case' I decide to ever return, I want to plan this out beforehand. How do I plan to keep as much as possible?

I already know I'll lose a house & some contents, & maybe all tames in the stable.

Do I get all 6 toons and their banks? How about Mounted pack/animals & its contents?
Other considerations I should be aware of?

For mounts/pack animals, make sure you have enough gold in your account. The stable master withdraws--what, 30 gold per week?--from your bank account.

Your characters, everything they are wearing, all that is in their bank boxes, and the pets they have in the stables will remain; I took a 6 year break and I got all of that back. As far as I can tell, legacy pets will remain as they were too... I've a 3x 125 Stat, 4x GM Chicken and Rabbit from when they could gain much better stats than they can now. I do not know about what you are riding, but I think that will be the case also.

Fill up your bank on each char with as many items you have.

If you run out of room then put items in your char backpack.

If you care about gold, prevent inflation from devaluing it by buying high priced items that will keep value. Rares are usually a good choice.

If you have to ask these questions then you aren't quitting.

If I quit paying for the account & don't play, what would you call it then? Inactive, taking a break, vacation, retirement, etc.? same thing - and who knows what will happen during that time frame

When I came back after 8 years of absence, everything I had including a very extensive server birth rares collection was deleted (I did beta testing and was one of the first to log in on atlantic)

The answer I got back from EA states word for word that "its possible that we have deleted your account because we needed room on our servers".

And this is the official answer I got after an escalation through support and also on the phone, so be careful...

Yeah i think after 5 years they delete the account. But if its reactivated for even only a month it keeps the account from being deleted. Not even sure if UO will be around for another 5 years, but its something to consider if you take a very very long absence.

When I quit the companion program for EA (which was me PAYING full price for all account and doing FREE work for EA) I asked them and was INSURED that my stuff would still be there because most of it was important for me (I had seer items since I played a role in the FoA storyline) which are priceless...

but they supposedly verified "up there" and asked the person responsible and they said they did erase accounts, to free up what ? 10 mb of space by deleting 1000 characters ?

This is called laughing at your customers in my book.

Naturally you will want to make sure the important stuff is saved first. Save the deeds and whatnot for your characters bags. So yeah, load up all your characters banks and bags. :)

Unless you really need the gold you might want to keep the house up just in case the housing system is going wack again and doesn't decide to decay.

ok first off I do understand your request so even thou this goes against my inner UO anchient to talk you out of it here is the way id do it.
If you decide to take an extended vacation:
1. Set up your bank boxes on all your characters for max storage, toss out all items you can make that are not special.

2. Your home(s): most funrature is makeable, ie: stone tables etc. Things like reward and gift items you set aside for sifting through. Limit the bags you use, I find too many use bags to an extreem and it takes of bank space you could use. If you finish the dismantling of the house and have set aside the items you wish to keep. Dont forget to use comodity deeds for stackable items if you have massive lumber, skins, regs, etc. You can now ether sell the house(if your on a high pop shard and the house is of great value) or take it down and place the gold in the bank. Remember to only pack Armor and special weapons you cant live without. The styles/usefullness may change while your gone.

3. as another said divie up the gold. Dont be afraid UO dont loose 1 character they loose all .(hehe just kidding I have not heard of a character on an inactive account being lost due to the account sleeping) Your pets are safe in the stable and under your tush.

4. You have if on a basic account 6 slots for characters if you do not have all filled you might want to make the rest up to hold items. If you have 7 slots it still applies. (6 characters can hold 125 items in the bank if you have not upgraded to any of the bank storage increses. so that alone on the basic 6 equils 750 bank count.) Now dont forget your characters can hold 125 items too so just keep an eye on the weight. Put all heavy items in the bank for your ease of movement. Choose a inn or tavern you wish to park in. I would suggest a neutral inn, as in the past many citys have had invasions.

Now you could avoid all this and just do the rotation of 1 month on and 2 off and keep your account(s) and houses up. Forgoing the hastle of packing up and unpacking and all that. Plus you could find the urge to play soo hard to resist (the UO adiction at work).

Had a couple more thoughts.
I liked M'Lady's post about playing intermittently; a house easily stands 90 day i believe, so maybe every 4th month I could play to keep the house standing?
Thinking of the house, it won't fall until after the vendors fall?

My need isn't immediate, I still have imbuing to finish, make a sampire and an archer, Like the subject, thinking about it - the planning stage which I think is the only smart way - I'm not quite ready to just throw a 10+ yr acct in the garbage, yet.

I think it is like shard trasfers you get 5 pack lamas on each charcter (cause they are funny looking) and fill your banks.

hmmm I dont think it is like transfers. Packys with items on them DO NOT auto Log. Like many people have already stated, load you bank, your backpack, a blue beetle, and make sure your riding the beetle before you log off. That gives you 375+ items per char.

Your allowed at this time to go 90 days = almost 3 months give or take a day or 2 as most months are ether 30 / 31 / 28Feb. Your best bet is do as many do on holder accounts.
30 days on/60 days off(2 months) that way your safe and the house and vendors are secure. you can play at your leasure when the 30 days on is running. I have known many during this lean time with finances strained to go 85 days then turn on but all it takes is 1 slip up and your house and all could be toast. So I recomend the 1 month on 2 months off.
