Lifting this out of another thread to avoid hijacking it:
And because I'm always harping on about this: Things which Stratics can do!

1. Ask people who have proven themselves to be experts in a particular area (Crafting, Sampires, Imbuing, etc...) to work on the existing Stratics pages in order that they can be kept up to date. The existing people have a lot on their shoulders and are just not experts. Bring in people who know their stuff.

2. Hold contests for thick article writing! Offer large-sum gold prizes for weekly content development which is then placed on the main Stratics page. I'm sure there are many community members, including myself, who would be willing to devote gold and time to this.

I'll answer this to the best of my knowledge and invite input from others.

1. Crafting, I have Basara, a very knowledgable crafter, in addition I know a fair bit about several crafts myself - to the best of my knowledge all our crafting information is totally up to date. If anyone can show me where it isn't I'll correct that.

Sampires - I did ask an expert. Here is what was written: UO Stratics *New* | The Sampire
Unfortunately this was the only piece he felt able to submit.

I would be delighted to welcome more experts in various fields to undertake the role of 'content editor'. I can ask - but I can't make them accept, and I can't make them actually write anything if they do. Two content editors have been regretfully let go because being on staff actually seemed to stop them writing!

Where possible I request permission for relevant board posts to be copied to site. You'll find quite a bit of Tina Small's information on site that was obtained that way.

However, to the best of my knowledge our information is currently up to date -please inform me where it isn't, and if possible what the information should be ammended to read and I would be delighted to edit.

Constructive suggestions, volunteers and offers of articles will be gratefully received.

Destructive attacks on myself, the site and my staff will not.

the one part about the sampire write up that is missing that is kinda important is where it talks about honoring.

the main reason to honor something isnt really for the damage, while that does help, its because if you kill something you honored it fills up your mana, stam, and hit points..

this is specially nice when fighting smaller monsters as you can switch targets fast and keep your mana and stam up.

and i dont think LS is a good replacement for HCI on your suit..

also where it says stats..
there are 2 different ways people do sampires..
the armor way or the EP way.

one set uses armor to get your hp/int and stam up..
what your looking for is 130 hp, 50 mana and 180 stam.. those are pretty much a min for sampires.

the EP way uses 50 EP to max out stam and hp with pots.

the EP way you have more room for higher mana.. but you gotta carry pots around everywhere.. and those seem to be the first thing monsters loot when you die.

and its really all about the weapons.. many times ive had bosses i couldnt kill until i got the weapons just right..

sometimes it helps to have AI, sometimes it helps to have mortals, sometimes feint works best. this is where things get expensive.

One area of crafting I'm not an expert on, is crafting stone items, especially the gargoyle stuff (I have no gargoyle characters).

If someone wants to write up a section for the Carpentry/Masonry FAQ dealing with stone weapons and armor (and updating the rest of the masonry section), I would be VERY happy.

Not sure if this is the right place to put this but I had a little problem in he housing section.

I was trying to find out exactly how long you have to move your stuff from your old house if you place a new one. Couple links in housing led to blank pages, and it never really says clearly "you have this much time.."

I was able to infer from the context that your old house just goes into a standard 5 day decay rate.

I believe it's 7 days, but I'm not 100% on that. Just to be on the safe side I always move in one fell swoop then drop the old house.

Messing around with house decay always makes me nervous.

Personally, I appreciate the information on Stratics. It is pretty well up to date and I have been able to use all of it effectively.

My question is this: 'Ask the Devs'.... The last post is showing to be from May 2011. I know that I have submitted at least 1 question to that particular thread and I'm fairly confident that others have as well. Is this no longer being utilized? If it is, how does it work? Do you wait for the Dev to answer before posting question and answer both?

Just a couple of thoughts:

  1. If it's not be utilized anymore, maybe notice of that could be placed in the thread.
  2. It appears that the current policy is that a question may not be answered or even addressed. I'm not certain that is the best way to go.... A 'bong'/rejection letter is probably better than nothing at all.
  3. In this time of very limited communications from Mythic/EA/Bioware, I think it might be a good idea to post all the questions with the date it was submitted to the Development Team by the Stratics Team (and which Stratics team member submitted it, but not to who) and then we can see how long it takes to get a response, if ever.

Not trying to pit Stratics against EA/Mythic/Bioware, just wondering how the communication stream works and how we can use it to get results and information.

I like the new consolidated stratics. I noticed the other day, while looking for some info, that several of the hyperlinks are broken, but the info is really there.

Under the Items Link, on this page, the link to base properties is not working, just a 404 error. There were several others, and I can post them as I find them again.

If it would be better, I suppose we can start a new thread for this.

Regards,

Edit: Just found one of the others, it is the Healing link at the top of this page. Also a 404 error.

One more note on content, I noticed that on the special moves page, here, Throwing does not have it's own drop down box for special moves cost reduction, as do the other fighting skills.

Thanks for the broken links, fixed those. We knew there would be some, too many pages are linked to each other for there not to be some we missed. You can only update the links for the pages that have been done prior to the one you're working on.
I *think* I've fixed the special moves page too.

I know in the past there has been many posts for recruitment into the honored echelon here on statics. All of those threads have stated the basic requirements for the job including some basic knowledge of HTML. Maybe a short summery from a "html expert" would help some of those potential sticky writers get up the gumption to write out and edit on an as needed basis some accurate info on the fly as they go about their normal routines.

I know for me, if I had a sticky under my name, I would need access to the content driven html format a way to access an edit button and the time to do so. I know over the years(at least since the last time I read a, "insert forum title here" wanted thread this has become easier and the knowledge to do so more available but, A short run down of how it would be done, not just the responsibility, but the "how too" might get better results as players and writers alike are more afraid of not knowing how to do then they are what to post about.

I am not saying its difficult but simply if players and posters felt as comfortable with posting with html format as they were with playing a sampire, things might be different.

Ned888: Your 'Ask the Devs' questions are still being passed through and as far as I know the Devs are still reading them. Questions from there have been included, and answered, in the last two Dev Chat videos.

5% Luck: HTML is no longer a requirement. Wordpress has a full wysiwyg editor making it very simple to create content for anyone wishing to join staff. we are also happy to accept submissions in the form of simple word documents or even essays typed directly into an email.
MS works, however, is rather problematical. I use open office, and it won't read those.

As part of the Towns and Guilds announcement I made recently I included a Contributor's guide to posting.
http://uo2.stratics.com/character-a...d-guilds-news/a-contributors-guide-to-posting
Staff would have slightly more access than a guild contributor, but the basics are pretty much the same.

I'll man up and personally offer 100m to Stratics for the development of well written, thick articles.

Edit: Ok I went to the sampire article and it's certainly a good start.

A good question would be to ask - Why do people continue to ask about sampires every day on the forums?

Because many people are kinetic learners rather than visual learners. These people would by nature spend their time hands-on in game and when they hear about sampires they do not want to spend hours browsing through posts to find out what they are looking for. They want their question answered in a short and succint manner so that they can go back to hands-on and learn through that.

oh I ask myself those questions.
Why have I spent hours and weeks trying my level best to get the site up to date when no one darn well reads it?
And if I ask why they don't read it they say 'because it's not upto date'.
How do they know that? Well because it wasn't upto date when they last looked several years ago and obviously nothing changed since then, has it?

Thank you very much for the offer of gold for articles - What topic would you like an article on that isn't already covered? And which shard is your gold available on?

This and...

They probably are hearing how powerful they are and don't want to waste time on a lesser build. Why mess around when you can dive in!

P.S. - Thanks Petra! I know I'm difficult but I mean well! ;)

I am very thankful for all of the work the staff does on UO Stratics... But I find of late when I want a piece of UO info I go to two places:

1) UO Guide
2) Stratics UO forums

I think I do that because I find Wikis are easy to find things and the search is straight forward. I use the boards for depth and when I need opinion on assorted issues in UO. The data on UO Stratics web pages may be current, but I find the site generally harder to navigate. Try to do a simple search for the stats on a Breastplate of the Berserker for instance. On UOGuide it goes right there via the search and has a pic with the stats. On Stratics, it puts me at the top of a page with all of the SA arties with lots of pictures. I have to scroll through the page or now use my browser's search to find the data. It's not that it is hard... But Wikis are just way easier IMHO. The profession forums on our Stratics boards are rich with info, but I use Google to search those most of the time because the in-boards advanced search is not as powerful. Honest feedback... Take it for what it is worth.

Stratics is my first choice for information, and then UOGuide next. However, finding relevant information on Stratics is much harder than UOGuide, unless you know the specific search term to use. Perhaps Apache Solr might give better search results?

One suggestion that I have, or rather question, is it possible to add a feedback button to each article so that we can submit corrections when we find them?

My kids and I read Stratics everyday learning stuff we've forgotten or never learned Petra, Don't worry you ARE appreciated. Along with UOGuide evrything you need to know is here on two sites. And the forums are a great source of knowledge as well, as well as providing a venue for those of us that wish to gather in this manner. So please keep up the good work.

P.S. and Black Sun, Yeah I did get it done in one shot cause it was making me nervous too!
After all these years I dropped my beach tower and moved into a bigger house about 50 feet away.

I think part of the problem here Old Man of UO is that with the new site changes some of the old pages are broken and when searching they don't appear making it more difficult than it used to be.

Keep giving the team feedback on those sorts of things and everytime you do find an error or a page missing. Or having difficulty and they can then try to correct the issue. Just drop any content editor or petra a pm telling them what the problem is and give them the link so they can go and fix it

To be honest, when I am researching a topic I will have many tabs open in the browser. If I don't have the chance to comment immediately to an article, I won't remember by the time I am done reading all the tabs. It's very easy to attach a feedback link to any article in Wordpress (which is not the same as a comment).

Petra,
Just so you know your effort was not in vain, I keep about a DOZEN tabs open on my browser at home at any given time, and lately about HALF of those are various pages from Stratics-UO that I keep up all the time for reference purposes. Mostly crafting related. The other half of my browser tabs are EVERYTHING ELSE IN THE WORLD that I'm currently interested in keeping a (pun intended) TAB on. So... judge from that what I think of your (and everyone else's) work on Stratics-UO. :)

Wow... I'm impressed with the speed improvements.

The new search seems much more forgiving on misspelled words (e.g. "perless" versus "peerless"), and so far produces more relevant results. That is, what I am looking for is usually in the top 10 results, when I couldn't always expect that before.

And when I tried something that it didn't recognize (e.g. bowyar essay), it provided a "did you mean bowyer essay?" Nice.

So far, every search I've tried has produced relevant results, where before I was often frustrated with the results. So - good job!
