Thievery on SP how to question

hi all, I asked this question on the PVP thief forum but now want to ask this on this forum because I think it would be different to steal on SP as opposed to prod shards. I just recently got my characters skills up to almost 80 and I have a thieves bandana and wanted to start having some fun with him. I don't expect to steal much but it would be nice to start learning how to do it. So my question for you is how do I pick my mark , where do i go to steal and how do i do it? I guess I open his pack by snooping then targeting something not heavier then I can steal at my skill level and then use the macro use skill steal wait for target last target? and then run like hell? LOL... Please let me know. Thanks...
P.S. Once you have the property on you how long before you are not grey anymore to your mark and where can I sell this stuff to start making some coin? Thanks...

Well im not a thief but. Most thiefs hang around luna bank... They snoop your pack then steal whatever they can under the weight limit. They turn into animal form and run like hell :p After awhile of stealing they post all their decent loot on here... Like we need more thiefs lol... but welcome.

Luna bank is a decent place when you don't have anywhere better to be. Don't wear any decent items in guard towns (bless the bandana). Check Despise once in a while for people doing the spawn.

Use a dagger to target the item you want, then hit steal->last target. Use the dagger to target so if the person moves you can just walk up to them and snag the item without re-snooping.

Gray status is two minutes.. people can only call guards for 20-30 seconds.
Offer to sell the item back to the victim if you can, otherwise hoard it or sell it on Stratics or through a vendor.

You can also use Arms Lore to target an item, but there's an 8-second skill delay before you can try to steal.

It might not.. I've only used Arms Lore for targetting a few times and I'm working from memory.

Also Ant, check out www.uothief.com and read the episodes for some entertainment and some tactics.
Thanks for all the info. NOw one more question: Once I steal an item and I run like mad and say I go to another part of Luna until I am no longer greay will the guards kill me on sight or am I safe in town unless the mark sees me while I am grey? And when I turn blue again and he attacks me because he is pissed while I am blue will guards kill him or do I have to call guards? Thanks...

i used animal lore to target. everyone always says not to because of the delay, but heres the thing. if the dude is standing still, i dont have to worry about delay, i just hit the regular steal macro. if he is runnin around and say i want to steal one of his weps, ill last target it in his paperdoll. also, if someone is hiding and revealing only every once in awhile, i will animal lore it if i dont think ill have time or that he will more. also, if you try to go fo rthe direct steal, and he moves and you get the 'you must be standing.... blah blah' message, its ok, because its on last target now anyways.

as far as choosing a mark, luna is ok if you want to practice stealing, but hardly anyone who goes there carries good stuff. sometimes you get lucky. luna is usually like a last resort, or 'i dont have enough time to look for people' type situation. if you find people out and about crafting, macroing, doing something in thier house, or killing champs or dungeon spawn, normally they will have something better on em. so if you want some good loot, you gotta traverse the lands lookin for marks, not wait fo rthem to come to you carrying thier most valuable possessions in luna.

and your question about luna. if you make a steal and dont get auto whacked (especially at low level) just run like hell out the west gate. less peopl hangin out on that side and normally you can hide by the time your out of the city wall. also, if you are blue and a blue attacks you, hit your guards macro. lol nothing better than free loot. oh, on that note. do like sweeney said and only bank steal naked and with a blessed bandana. the trick is to get thier loot, not give yours away.

one last thing. any more questions like this, just post em on UOThief forums. youll get the best responses there. some people here think thieving takes no skill *glares* lol, you know who you are haha

*thinks back to his days of stealing on Siege*

Well, as already posted Luna is where a lot of thieves hang out. This should be a tip to you...don't spend too much time in Luna...most of the packs have already been sorted through.

Places I used to spend the most time getting good steals...

  • Champ spawn location - Had best luck at T2 spawns
  • Dungeons - Doom, old world locations
  • Skara bank - it's the bank many tamers use to do their banking since the stable is so close.
  • Near faction HQs - factioneers constantly running in and out.
  • Moonglow bank - Used to be the biggest bank sitting bank on Siege.
  • Treasure map islands - Lots of loot in the treasure hunter's packs.
  • Big monster spawn locations - Lot's of PvMers keep their loot until they are close to full packs.
  • Ice Island - Always find a few tamers running around.
  • Yew Orc fort - There used to be a constant orc/player presence there until ORC disappeared from the shard.
  • Elf town - Lot's of people there for turn ins.
  • Player run vendors - People come and go, but most will buy items and not gate out immediately, so the items are fair game.
  • PvP area outside of Luna - Always a few folks who actually had ok loot to nab while they were busy trying to stay alive.

I'l try to remember some of my other old stealing haunts and post them since exposing those locations won't hurt my business anymore since I don't play UO anymore...la

Haha, people used to ask why i kept my old newbied shovel in my pack. Insta item for selecting a last target without worring about is eventually breaking like the daggers did...la

Snowballs should work too.
Yes, but if I recall correctly, if that person has a snowball intheir pack, the snowball graphic and notification will alert the mark to your presence in the area. Not good when you want them to believe they are in a safe area that they are all alone in...la

I have a quick question, as it seems we have a few thieves posting in this thread.

Do you feel it is fair that you get to keep an item even if you are killed?

I feel it is very unfair and unrealistic (not that all of UO is realistic), if I succeed in killing you while still gray and before you have banked the item that I lose the item.

To me this seems very unfair, why reward the thief for failing, if you die I hope you don’t count that as a success.

I get frustrated that I kill the bugger, but he gets to keep my item!

That was a feature granted by the Devs years ago. Not the best way to capture shinies, but at the same time it was fun to be able to steal when surrounded by a whole guild and then just let them kill me knowing that I would be keeping the item I just stole.

Fair? Probably not but at the same time, with the way the thieving profession was nerfed over the years, it certainly wasn't something I wouldn't use to my advantage...la

well, about the 2 minute bless on stolen goods... this only works outside of guard or champ spawn zones. so if we steal somethign from you at the bank or at a spawn, it automatically pops back into your pack (not giving anyother thieves a chance to snag it before you do). so its kinda double sided. That being said, do you think its fair that you can bless your most valuable shinies away from us... for free? or, is it fair that we cant give murder counts, are freely lootable, and never trusted (hehe i really dont mind this one though)?

While it may not be fair, we will use it. We're thieves... its what we do. Maybe you would be happy if the use of the stealing skill auto killed the thief and sent thier entire bank's contents to your house? That would be sweet lol

As far as finding a mark goes... banks, high end monster locations, champ spawns (despise!), and the occasional people at gates. The best gates in my experience are yew, spirit, and moonglow. Best banks are jhelom, luna, and skara. Champ spawns vary a lot, Despise is a good one, khaldun is a good one as well, then its random but most guilds prefer to spawn in out of the way locations. If you see pvp skirmishes going on, normally outside of luna, sit back and wait, check paperdolls as they fly by and note who has the best gear and note who loots if said person dies. When someone wearing high end gear drops, and is looted, if the looters start to run, pounce. If they stay and fight poke around and see who has what and target who has the best of it; steal and come back for more. ^^

So what skill should I use to target an item? Which is best to use? Thanks...

Also can I get a volunteer to take me to all the hot spots? I would love to learn my way around. Thanks...

i will take you around to the hot spots next time we're both on too.

question to everyone else. Do you find it to be a hassle to double click your dagger, card, snow, or shovel and then click the item? Thats what it always seemed like to me. Seems like it would be alot of wasted time poppin pack, double clickin dagger, then targeting item. i just like hitting a key and having a cursor pop up. is there somethign yall are doing that i dont know about? yall using a last item macro?

Art, you can get some practice steals from stealing the arrows from npcs in Skara first, or steal the books from bookcases in towns. You can also practice via arrangement with someone who visits NEW house to steal an item or two from them so you get the hang of it.

Before you use steal on any players (without permission) you will have to be out of NEW. If you feel ready to move on now just let me know and I'll get your grad stuff together.

Not at all. I had a double clicked shovel set up as my F1 key macro. Hit the macro and get the cursor...blamo, item targetted.

Another useful macro I used to use was one that set a players pack as last object. I could do that when the player got onto my screen, then I could do a run by the player, and hit that macro. I would get their pack open, and I wouldn't have to linger by them very long while visable. It allowed me to do my shopping without attracting too much interest...la

Have been meaning to set this up. its definitely a pain to double click my way into a backpack, especially with all the stealthers around...

Going for the random steal, you mean?

With all the rune/mage/ninja/etc books people carry nowadays, do you ever get anything worthwhile out of that?

no, not for the random steal. talkin about making a last item macro so you can open someones paperdoll from afar and then when they come near all you have to do is pop it with the macro instead of double clickin through a paperdoll and what not when they are close enough to steal from.

random steal... nah nothin good from it for me. i usually only attempt it when i see someone about to disappear through a moongate lol. one day though... one day something good will be sitting in my hand as they disappear... one day... lol

I personally prefer arms lore to target an item. No timer in between using it and stealing.

Not one person has told this man that he needs to join the Rogue's Guild.

For shame.

From his post it seems as if he's been doing some stealing on prodo shards. So no need to say it. Besides that he's been to the thieves forum...

I am on SP and am in NEW atm. I am going to graduate soon so I can start stealing :) although I hate to leave NEW. They are the great they really are, but I can not do the things I am meant to do in the UO world while I am NEW, and that is steal everythin you own, even you underwear lol. Once I leave I am down to join any thief guild that would be happy to accept me. Shal, ( NEW) when you read this post this is no disrespect to you or NEW. I love the fact you guys took me in... I just want to start playing my thief. I thank you for all that you have done and will do for me until I have grown my wings and ready to take flight. See you all in game...

That is testament to the magic of NEW. It is not meant to be permanent. Some of the bonds you create while in NEW may last well beyond the time you leave this game.

*chuckles* I left NEW early. About two weeks in. They helped me but I wanted more. I respected their rules back then and resigned to seek my own destiny.

Dream the impossible and make it come true. Welcome to Siege.
