The ZOOG Fight pits.

Back in the day my guild used to host a Gladiator Style PvP fight in one of our houses that was set up as a pit style fighting arena. The rules were simple no weapons, armor, jewels or clothing with properties were allowed into the pit, Chiv and Bushido were not allowed and violaters of the bushi /chiv would be ejected, spec moves were allowed. There were however boxes located in the combat area with various GM Iron weapons and Leather armor pieces in them, that could be used and bandages were also scattered around. It was a test of raw skill where items did not play much of a role. Random tamed and released aggressive critters were randomly released into the pit like hell hounds, frenzied ostards, dire wolves etc. Back then there was a 25,000 gold entry fee and the winner took the purse. Pretty much everyone followed the rules and rarely did we have to eject anyone from the house. It was actually quite popular among the 20-30 regulars that attended on Legends (When Legends had a healthy population) It usually was not who you would expect who won. PvP had became to item based that many of the PvPs did not function well without the L33T items.

So would anyone be interested in Pit fighting if I put up a Arena house and hosted a Monthly event like this?

Since placing the Zento Hub house, if I put vendors back up I would just put them there instead of the Moonglow bunny/cotton field house. And place a 18x18 in Malas. running distance from Luna or Umbra. Could also get a chicken/chicken lizerd, dog fighting event going there as well. Even thinking about a pet Auction since the layout would be perfect for parading those 4+ and rare Critters in front of a audience. And Finally a Rez of the Great Zoogie Hunt it was cheezy but popular, the winner gets a prize and the option to sell the Zoogies they collected to the house or get them returned. It was pretty basic 1 Zoogie was locked down and a Rune with the contestants name placed in front of the ZOOGIE as the contestant collected Zoogies they start dropping them on the pile behind their named rune. We always ran this contest for a month and at the end the player with the most Zoogies Wins. Usually gave a 120 scroll, 5 mil and a engraved something as a trophy for 1st place, 1 mil and a engraved trophy for second place and 500k and a engraved trophy to 3rd place. The Great ZOOGIE Hunt could be interesting on Siege. Ran for a Month so everyone that wanted could participate. LOL I think I might even still have the webpage for the Great Zoogie hunt hiding on one of my websites.

Yeah this is going to take some help running the event. I took the glow house down and placed the Arena just west of Safe Haven and just finished building it if you want to take a look. Only about 2 screens from your house

Built the house West of Safe Haven, Seems like a good idea to have a event house like this on the edge of a Player Town rather than a NPC town First floor is the Pit, Gladiator Entrance, and spectator area around the pit. Rules will be simple take nothing in and only approved clothing, All Gladiator packswill be snooped before entry into the pit Second floor Spectator area, bar and wagering on the Gladiators (Thanks Planters for the suggestion) 3rd floor Critter Cages, the cage door randomly opened and the critters fall into the pit from the 3rd floor. Anything from Mongbats to Drakes. Top floor will be for Pet Auctions, Pet fights and whatever else may come up. There is a tele tile from the Zento hub and I believe a house or 3 in Safe Haven have public tele tiles.

What is allowed skill wise: Spirit Speak For healing is allowed, Bushido Confidence is allowed, Chiv clode Wounds is allowed, Healing is allowed. Any other use of Bushido or Chiv will result in being ejected from the house for the duration of the event. Repeat offenses will result in a ban from the house and no future participation in the fight pit.

What can taken in: Any clothing with no properties. NO ROBES that cover what might be underneat

Empty Packs are required. There will be chest and random items on the ground consisting of mage,necro and mystic scrolls. Potions, GM Weapons and Armor including bows and arrows.

All skills are allowed with the only restrictions being on Bushido and Chiv. All races are allowed. No items can be picked up or removed from chest until the bell rings (Monastery Bell), If you die or leave the pit you are eliminated and cannot reenter the Pit. The fight continues until there is one Gladiator left standing. That Gladiator is Crowned CHampion and receives the purse.

Entry Fee is 25,000 gold to be held by one of my accounts with a ZERO bank balance all Entry Fees fill the winners purse.

Entry: A mailbox will be placed at the Arena, ALL entries will be due the day beofore the fight. Put the Character Name in a Book race and combat skill and shout out in GC or PM me here and I will arrange to meet for the entry fee. I need to know a day in advance to have compatible items available in the pit. There will be a limit of 14 gladiators in any event.

In the future if this proves worthwhile, we will look at team and 1v1 pit tournemnts. For now a simple Royal Rumble

Another auggestion if I may would be ton post this on other shards so it's an all shard every that would really help the shard. Not sure if it's something we could do on the UO Facebook or em event page. Unless that's not something we wouldn't want to use the to attract others here. This doesn't seem to be something done on other shards anymore that I have seen so I love this.

Want to do this under the ZOOG or PERV guild tag (LOL Probably ZOOG, would sound bad hearing "the Perverts are hosting an event" ) so some of the house settings can be guild level security and so we can communicate via guild chat. So someone with a spare unguilded acct. That has a good and honest Siege Reputation.

Can't pull this off by myself, I would most likely do the critter releasing as there is a trick to it and risk if you reveal while working the cage line.

It is fun or was, back in the day a few L33T PvPs thought it would be easy wins. Until they got beat to death with a smiths hammer weilded by a 100mace, 100anat, 100 tact, 100anat 100 wrestle 100 parry, 100 healing never pvp in their life toon the kid took home 350k and could honestly say he PWND some of the shards best PvPs. Many wagers were lost that day. LOL the 3 PvPs raged it was not fair because they didn't have their gear and the kid could never beat any single one of them in real PvP. Seems to me it was as real as PvP has been since prior to AOS. Of course luck plays a role in opening the right chest, finding the right weapon or scrolls or armor and being fast enough to equp and use it. Then do you join together to take the drake down or let the person the drake has targeted die and finish the drake yourself. Work together and eliminate a strong character and fight it after they are dead or go alone and take on everyone in the pit as they come. A lot of variables come into play that can put the strongest PvP at the mercy of a much weaker gladiator. One thing I learned in the times I entered the pit was...... Who would have thought there would be someone with 100 mage and eval in a gladiator pit that would find a flamestrike scroll! that was my last thought as I was burned to a crispy pile of ashes, and eliminated by a noob. Anything can happen in the pit and usually what you would least expect does happen.

Well the house is built I am making all the stuff to put in the house and the pit. Bo, Kelmo and Planters have offered to help and I accept Going to schedule the first fights for Saturday July 15th at 5pm CST. If folks want a different time we can go later but I don't get home from the Saturday Farmers Market until 3pm and finish up with the MUST do farm chores usually around 4:30 pm so earlier really won't work.

Not going to do wagering via the house to start. Going to need someone to record the wagers and the figure the odds.

Need a person or two who does not want to participate in the fighting to watch and act as refs of sorts.

A ring announcer to introduce the fighters as they enter the pit.

The first fights will be a 1v1 tournament style how long it takes will depend on how many fighters enter the tournament.

The second part will be the royal rumble where every one enters the pit and it is a free for all.

Tips from the past.
1. The entry to the pit Tiles are set to anyone going in and to Co-Owner getting out. There are three ways out of the pit. Death, The leave house option, and Victory.

2. Have more than one combat skill, swords/macing, wrestle/fencing for example. Sucks to open a chest or bag and find weapons not matched with your skill set. The more skills the greater your odds of getting armed early on are.

3. Make alliances in the pit but keep in mind only 1 warrior will walk out of the pit.

4. Work together to take down the released tames. Or not a hell hound is not much of a challenge until you are wearing basic armor and using basic weapons.

5. The first warrior to obtain a weapon has a distinct advantage over those who are slower.

6. Mage and necro are weaker but if they survive and find the right scrolls can be devastating. Personally I would stop fighting everyone else and take anyone I saw casting out ASAP

7. Parry is your friend.

8. Odds are you will die, learn from it and formulate a strategy for the next time.


Now the question of using this to attract off shard participation has came up A LOT over the last couple of days. Personally I think off shard competition in these events would be great. It seems most other folks that have chimed in feel the same way. So we will advert the event in UOhall and announce it on errr I will on GL, ATL, Chessy, Legends. Everyone else feel free to put it out there on other shards GC. or the same.

I am going to dedicate a couple of pages on the Thunder 5 Ranch website to this with rules, info and list of entries each week. LOL they will be hidden pages from the rest of the website. LOL I can see my customers finding a page about this and wondering what kind of nut job their farmer is Once the Pages are up I will link them together and put a LINK here. Thinking about starting a FB group for this as well so we can talk about improvements and not have to work around who is in GC and in what time zone around the world For me FB is the easy way to communicate

Thinking of you for setting up the wagering, recording the bets, fixing the odds and running the gambling end of things. LOL It was your idea after all Kind of need to get a few events out of the way to see who the dominate fighters are to make the odds. IE Without knowing how it will shake out everyone would be 1-1 odds. Down the road if Bo is the man to beat and rarely loses for example could see 50-1 odds on a new unknown or known going up against a champion level pit fighter. Or a pair of champion levels going toe to toe in the tournament phase being 1-1 or 2-1 odds. Will get hard laying odds on off shard fighters, but given this is raw skill and a little luck folks used to fighting with top gear will be at a bit of a disadvantage. LOL the best training for prep for this is lose your armor and go fight earth els, lizerd men and ettins naked with a gm weapon. World of difference fighting without 70s resist and hit effect weapons

Things might have changed but parry, wrestle, anat, tactics, stealing and healing with the balance in a weapon were pretty potent. Also usually the first ones to get ganked right off the bat as well.

OK here is what we need for arena staff.

2 Refs 1 with snooping to check everyones packs for contraband. Both with GM+ Mage/Eval to drop flame strikes on cheaters.

Someone to stealth and randomly open caged critters cages allowing them to drop into the arena.

Going to leave the betting to a 3rd party if anyone wants to run that racket.

Someone neutral to randomly place weapons, scrolls and armor pieces in the bags and boxes on the floor.


4-5 fighters to come do some trial runs and make suggestions to improve the design, rules etc.

Going to do the first Arena fight as a tournament with 12 slots open followed by a royal rumble. The Tournament pay out a purse, the royal rumble is just for fun.

I know at least 3 folks including myself are training characters just for the Arena it will be interesting to see how the different templates and strategies play out.

Thinking of having you do the sign ups and setting up the tournament matches. I am wanting to keep it as simple as possible and the betting is more complex than I want to do in house. Plenty of Mafia types out there that can capitalize on the gambling side of it LOL.
