This thread is getting derailed and even though it's you popps I'll bite.
There is virtually zero difference between making an item a craftable and giving it away in the form of a "gift". In both cases everyone and their brother will have umpteen of them unless you make the ingredients required in the crafting process difficult to obtain.
Well, I suggested making them craftables not really as in regards to their wider availability, but more to give crafters some new items to craft and, thus, play those characters with......
And, if the process is enough lengthy and complicated, for example like to make ammunitions for High Seas ships, chances are that most players might not want to bother with the lengthy process and leave it to crafters.......
Personally, I would like to see again crafters in the game be crafters, and not mules used in support of fighters as it sometimes may be.....
I think, that players who enjoy playing a crafter, on average may not be deterred from lengthy or complex crafting processes because they actually enjoy the crafting and do not find it annoying or boring. Since other players, instead, "might" be deterred from crafting by lengthy and complicated crafting processes to make certain items, this might allow players who enjoy crafting to have a market selling their crafted wares to those players who, even though they have their own crafters, do not want to bother with lengthy and complex crafting processes. It would be a way to allow a market to exist where there would otherwise be none, if most players are self-sufficient in their crafting needs.
