A guildmate of mine was doing a trade mission to Skara Brae, only to be blocked from using the ferry.

Assuming she wasn't just bugged, and that this is an intended result, I would think that the ferry shouldn't count as magical transport. While the game mechanic may be read by the code as teleportation, in an RP sense it's a ferry, and thusly it shouldn't count as magical transport.

It should count as a boat because that is what it is and it doesn't take you far anyways. Please fix it :)

The problem is that it uses a teleportation system. This was brought up while it was on TC and Kyronix did say he would look into it, but there were no guarantees as it's a delicate system. My assumption is that they weren't able to change it.

But...that's not how it works game mechanic wise. The ferry doesn't sail you across, it teleports you.

Orrrrr, players can just sail themselves across....Its not hard.
Agreed, it's not hard, but it seems like the game should have a way to complete the mission built in already, or have the quest giver say they will need a boat. It's not a big deal, it just seems like sloppy quest design is all.

They tried fixing it, but I would imagine they can't change the system without breaking it and likely more. And there's not much point wasting the time to create and code in another system just for the trade quests when there's a shipwright literally right there beside the docks.

I would also like to point out that you can use house teleporters and move all over your house, but you can't use a vet telly tile and travel to another house. How is it coded to allow that I wonder ?

I actually hadn't realized they'd tried fixing it already -- was sort of hoping it just hadn't come up yet and that, once they realized, it'd just be a tweak, a matter of outlining a specific exception to a rule.

Who knows, maybe it still is. If not, oh well.

My guess is that one is a part of the housing system and therefore not affected, while the other counts as a sort of teleportation outside of the housing system and IS affected?

When you call out "bank," does the NPC come over and hand you a box to be opened, or do you have to locate your specific box? Just because some things are streamlined does not mean they're "magical."

The unfortunate truth is that teleportation is some of the most spaghetti of all the inner workings. Unless it's absolutely necessary we try not to touch that code, as it is so intertwined with other systems that the effects of even the smallest change can be widespread and potentially disastrous. We took a look in relation to the Skara Ferry and unfortunately it was better left untouched.

So how about a cross server in-game event, with contributed materials in-game and maybe a design competition out of game, to build a bridge?

the banker has nothing to do with it. he may as well not be there, because obviously the banks are majical as well.

Why not just move the NPC who gives the orders to the mainland side of the docks?

He might feel endangered there. Too far away from the guards. He enjoys grabbing a bite in a local tavern when it's time for lunch or breakfast or anything. He also loves smalltalk by pedestrians which are common in Skara Brae city but not on the mailand.

I always carry a boat or 2 or 3 in my pack. And since I leave one boat in the water most of the time I carry a row boat for getting to and from Skara if need be. (and for crossing small rivers)

A bridge building event would be awesome. Could even, assuming the system has wiggle room for new destinations, have it tied into the trade system.

A trader could be on the mainland side, at a construction site, and you'd have to bring him shipments of tools, wood, ingots etc. If the shard doesn't contribute enough within the time frame the bridge is not built. If it does contribute enough, come the next publish, a bridge appears.

Since starting the quests in earnest with my treasure hunting character I live in fear of the open seas. I can fight on land adequately enough but a trio of deep sea serpents and an errant kraken have sent me OooOOOooo - ing to the bottom of the sea more than once. Travelling at rowing boat speed across the Skara Brae channel was quite nerve wracking..I had to have a lie down afterwards!

That's the point: they effectively operate on a supernatural level, otherwise a player would have to go through rigmarole of locating a specific box to open, or the banker NPC would bring over a box. We can look at the Skara ferry as being physical but not showing it.

I am doing the quests from Skara and I use a rowboat, I have had monsters join me on the journey but they have been the landlubbers type, Ogres, Ettins, Brigands, Spiders, Dire Wolves. I too would not enjoy the company or escort of Deep Sea Serpents and Krakens but I have made many many trips across that inlet and have never seen one of those there.

Seen them..... nearly died..... Those Deep Sea Serpents are pretty much a death trap. 2 of them will take you down in 2 hits. And they aren't like their pansy cousins you fish up with a bottle or anything... remember these ones are on Steroids. Ok if I could have my pets with me but it seems that the pets won't come with me onto a boat anymore. Which leaves me fairly defenseless. So even the small crossing at Skara can be extremely hazardous.
