Beh-lem sat with the completed map in front of him. He had studied the map, using all of his wisdom learned from the old man who had taken him in during his youth. He leaned back in his chair and closed his weary eyes, re-living past moments with the old man.
“Let me tell you a story Beh-lem” he had said, one eve when Beh-lem had grown weary of the study pressed upon him.
” Many moons ago, I had heard of a book, a scroll, foretelling of great catastrophe. It was thought to be in the place where where you were found, the Underworld. Humanoid and Gargoyle alike were searching for it. Bloodshed was taking place as each searched to be the first to locate it. The Gargoyles searching wanted to protect the scroll from the anti-Gargish that were searching who did not like those of the gargoyle race. The Anti-Gargish thought that if they found it first that they could end the gargoyle race by deciphering the prophetic words and fulfilling what it said. There were others that were Pro-Gargish and helping the Gargoyles to search. They wanted peace with the Gargoyles and to learn from them, their trades and skills.” he said as Beh-lem sat quietly listening.
” Unknown to both sides, the scroll was not in the Underworld. Only a map of where the scroll was hidden was there. The map had been entrusted to one of the Old Gargish Elders. Sworn to protect it with his life. On a day filled with much bloodshed , the anti-gargish found the Elder. He fought along side his trusted advisors, until he had the chance to slip through the enemies hands. He made his way bedraggled and bleeding until he came upon a camp, a camp of four thieves. Worn and weary, knowing his time was near, for he grew weaker by the moment, he rendered the map into four fragments. To each thief he gave a piece, asking them to protect it until the time came that once again there were those who wanted the gargoyles out of their lands and wished to see them driven back into the Abyss and possible extinction.” he said quietly.
”That is where you come in, It was foretold also that there would be one who could lead those that seek for good only, the book of scrolls, when the time comes. That one is you, Beh-lem.” he said, looking at the small gargoyle sitting at his feet.
”But, I am too little, teacher, to lead anyone!” Beh-lem said. The old man could see the fright in the young gargoyles eyes.
“That is why you must study Beh-lem, learn..for with learning comes wisdom, and with wisdom comes bravery. It is my hope that it will be many moons before the time again comes when those against your race seek the book, But you must be ready!” he said.
Reaching up and touching the ancient ankh he wore around his neck, he looked towards Beh-lem. He gave a silent prayer up to the gods, asking for time..time for the young gargoyle to mature and learn what was need.
Rousing himself, Beh-lem looked once more at the map. It was time to gather the people and find the book. He knew now where it lay, and the people of the realm must prepare for battle once again. Gathering up the pieced together map, he strode out of his chambers to let them know of his findings.
