The Gold Sink Dungeon

What would everybody think of a new dungeon that cost players 100,000 gold for access for one hour. The dungeon could be filled with all kinds of mobs and puzzles and traps. None of the mobs drop gold, instead, they each have a different chance to drop certain rare/cool/useful expendable and deco items. That way you're kind of scrambling around trying to find cool things to do, and having to drop gold every hour in order to maintain access.

Could be an interesting gold sink?

On todays market 100,000 gold equals to 8 cents to 10 cents. I don't see mystic willing to drop rares for such small amounts (they want 3,250,000 for a tree that doesn't do anything). Even if the dungeon was full of people they would have to drop enough good stuff to keep people interested. This would be something to consider if the game was f2p then the price to enter the dungeon could be a lot more for a longer time.

We already have one that costs gold to enter - vacant, buggy, unused.
New players would not have that amt to spend, essentially making part of their game off-limits, seems unfair.

Not really.

New players should focus on training up skills and learning the game. And when they have achieved enough gold they can enter should they wish to.

Would be similar to the Gauntlet. A gold skull costs 100k+ if you don´t wanna do the quest yourself...

Yea.. the idea as it stands now sounds like the gauntlet. And even if the devs developed something like that, people would only use it for..at most..a month before they got bored of it.

For example, the only parts of the abyss that are used on a regular basis now are the ones that you have to get imbuing ingredients on. I don't think the upper level/entrance is used at all on any shard, except by nubs to the expansion (and everything else for that matter).

You might try tweaking your idea so it isn't just "pay to get in, get cool stuff!!!" :)

I don't even go to the one that costs 10,000 gold to get into. Pretty sure I wouldn't use one that cost 10x as much unless it came with special access to "A Happy Ending."

If you make a gold sink dungeon with monetary benefits its not really gold sink. Its more of a make the rich richer thing. So, good basis, but remove the exclusive item drop part.

He did say gold sink. And there is no gold to gain in the dungeon. Gaining items does not generate gold in the system it only allows trading between existing gold between the players. So it's a gold sink.

If it costs me 100k to get in the dungeon and i can stay in there and farm rare items to the point of making a profit its not a gold sink thats effective. even if it costs 100k. I can walk into a number of places in this game for free and bump into a snake that gives me a nice pink scroll that sells for millions. Provisioner NPC are gold sinks, there just bad ones.

This idea would work 100kg every time someone enters the dungeon

no gold obtained from the mobs or puzzles in the dungoen there should not be ANY healers in the dungeon either, so if you die, you have to pay another 100k to get in and cannot be ressed in the dungeon either (like Khaldun)

items would make a profit for those who are able to get them, But gold comes from somewhere, and its not just from items being sold

A++ idea

Remmeber how gold gets introduced into the system from thin air. Monster killed, npc escort quest, bod gold reward, quest, ending champ spawn gold drop, selling to npc, and well dont remmebr again. But the most significant gold ever introduced was the gold dupes that occured many years ago those are very rare. the other methods of gold introduced are very little the most being a champ spawn end gold generation so not even much to think about.

All that gold remains in the system is traded between players.
If all gold stop being introduced and the system had 1 trillion in gold then the system will still have 1 trillion in gold no matter what items are sold between players 10 years to come well actualy less as there are countless ways that gold leaves the sytem.

You understand. A gold sink is to remove gold from the game. If I payed 1mil to get in the dungeon that gold disaperes from the sytem. So the game wide will have 1mil gold less. If I gain a item worth 10mil from that the system still will have 1mil gold less as when i sell the item it will be to another player with gold that has already existed in the system for many years. If he made the system that you sell to npc then that defeats the point of gold sink as gold is generated into the sytem that was not there before.

I still feel ripped off upgrading my accounts to SA and that was enough money for something I barely use. :) That whole thing is a dungeon, inside and out.

We are punished enough in UO without punishing active players that go out and do something with their game time. If you want to punish anyone… lets start with bank sitters that spend their whole day just hanging around. I actually suggested this a long time ago. People who are buying and selling would be left alone, along with people using the bank and passing by. People who sit 3+ hours would be met with an NPC tax collector or be dragged off to jail and charged for vagrancy. That AND/OR a property tax on Luna house owners based on the size and amount of vendors they host. OR how much rent they charge their vendors.

But… if you really want to see a big gold sink… how about doing real damage to the town by charging 100k per cannon ball shot? ;) Muhahahahaaaa.

But don’t punish the players who play the game.

I don't think you understand how gold sinks function. Anything that deletes gold from the economy and doesn't add any more of the physical item "gold" is a gold sink.

Thanks to everyone who replied with feedback. To quell the cries that this is not a gold sink, you're wrong :p. Even if you get an item in this dungeon that would sell for 10 million, that's not actual gold that's created, it's an item that has NO monetary value until someone purchases it. Therefore, any money that you paid to get into and stay in the dungeon is money that is removed from the economy. You benefit because you got the item and can sell it for more than you paid to hunt for it, that's the whole point. Who would pay 100k an hour to be in a dungeon where there is no reward?

I still feel strongly that this should be an hourly entrance fee (like a quest timer currently works, and you can set this 'quest' timer to automatically renew or kick you out when the timer expires). It could spit you out at a random tree around Britannia for fun :p

The prism of light is not a gold sink, because you can get gold from the creatures that are inside. It also doesn't have any rewards worth your time in that awful dungeon.

This new dungeon is a good idea!

Actually ... *tips hat to Surguries*

"the idea" fits quite nicely with the old what is a sandbox question ...
I have found ...

Which is a(sandbox) world where nearly all players could create their own quests and share them with the world. It was all done through instancing and event planning tools. But the game allowed users to create unique quest lines and guild based lore questing.
IF viewed as a version of "house customizing" ... whew!
what a concept ...

however ..."the problem" remains as ever ...
"getting" the Dev's and EA etal. ... to play along and provide the tools/coding to "make it so".

*sigh*
