“A new era.” That’s what she said.
Raelyn didn’t know just how right she was!
It will be the first time in many, many years that a Caine will not be Captain of the Covian Guard.
Melody had trained her entire life as a Guard member, eventually to take over as Captain. Her father had viewed her as the son Mason never was. And she had allowed it. Craved her father’s attention, in fact. She learned fast, rose through the ranks quickly, and gained the trust of her men.
She beamed every time her father was proud of something she had done and strove to do even better.
It was almost a nail in her heart when he chose Thea over her as his successor for Captain of the Guard. She was angry, hurt, many more things she couldn’t identify. She secretly wished Thea would die so she could take her rightful place as Captain. And that thought hurt her even more because she loved her sister.
And then it happened.
That fateful day Thea joined Arkon on that boat and fell overboard. For months they had searched, and she finally surfaced, but without her memory.
Melody was delighted when Mason asked her to step down as Emissary and take up the position of Captain. This was where she should have been all along; where she belonged!
She thrived as Captain, for many months.
But then, something changed. Not the job, that will always remain as it is.
SHE changed.
She found herself hating her job, the men that served under her, and everything about Cove.
She was angry with her father; angry with herself for allowing him to control every aspect of her life.
Mason was definitely unhappy when she told him she was stepping down as Captain and resuming her job as Emissary. He knew that their father would be more than unhappy that she chose Raelyn, a non Cain as her successor.
Melody knew in her heart it was the right move, both for herself and for Cove. The Guard needed a strong leader; much stronger than she could be for them right now.
And so, a new era starts.
