The Darkness

I've found, twice in the past few days laying about, a rune for "The Darkness." It is an odd rune in that it does NOT have the standard "Recall Rune" on top then the rune title on bottom line with (Trammel, Felucca, Malas, etc) thereafter.

Just:

The Darkness
Weight: 1 Stone​

My chars' received the message: "this rune will not work for me"

Although; I have not yet tried it with any of the chars that bought into the Shadowlord er whatever deal there in Moonglow a while back and has the glass dagger .... Anyone know what this rune is about ... given the 2 liner marking it appears 'special.' Maybe faction related????

Not quite true. Once you get the skills to go back you can use it. I have some on a few chars that I keep forgetting to take the challenge....hmm guess I could do that now huh?

Addendum, you only get it when you create a new char using the KR client. And you can only use it when you are using the KR client.

However, training up skills in the interim until you are strong enough can be done using the 2d client.

And you also need the token of passage on you when you use the rune

I'm 99% positive I didn't have the token on me when I used the rune.

Possibly was in my bank box - I tended to keep all the stuff from the starter quest in the bank til I can beat the knight

I just made my character and attempted to kill the knight using the rune but failed. I have trained up a bit more and wanted to try again last night but said "I cannot recall from that object right now." I tried again just now thinking there was some kind of timer but I got the same message. Anyone know if I can try the to kill the Knight again or do I only get 1 shot? Thank you.

There is a timer that you need to wait for i cant remember how long it is!
also there is a bug that makes the rune never work and it will give you that message! I reported this several months ago!

There is indeed a timer - and I know you used to be able to do the quest more than once, the timers were one day before you could return if the Knight beat you, and three if you beat him. No matter how many tries you have though, a character can only get the special item reward from the quest once.

If you're going to challenge the Dark Knight hoping to get a skill tutor, don't forget you can get basically the same item from doing a very very easy quest in Ter Mur. Get the quest called "A Mystic's Journey" from Ortlem the Mystic in the Royal City (just south of the farmers' tents in the middle of town). Give Ortlem 100 Dragon's Blood and 100 Demon Bone and he will give you a Crystal Ball of Knowledge that works the same as the skill tutor that is a supposed rare drop received after challenging the Dark Knight.

And yes, the runes for challenging the Dark Knight seem to be bugged in that they can only be "used" once. Your chance at finishing the challenge vanishes into thin air if you fizzle at trying to use the rune.

What is the reward?

I got a Ring of the Servant the one time I was able to get the rune to work. Worthless pieces of jewelry. Think it had healing on it or something. The most desirable reward is the skill tutor.

I was looking through some old posts and I think the original plan might also have been to let you repeat the challenge every three days, possibly with no chance at a reward after the first time?? But with the runes as buggy as they are, I doubt anyone ever goes back.

Just a thought, been a very long time since I did this particular quest, but will the rune go into a runebook? Might avoid the risk of failure....

I can't seem to find any more details for the staff and ring on Stratics (might just be my lack of skill in searching though!), but from digging around elsewhere I found references to slightly different properties on them, such as the Echo staff delivering three lightning bolts, each of low damage, to a target space, whilst the ring casts Greater Heal on you - each of these items has 20 charges, I have no idea if there is any way to 'recharge' them once used but I'd suspect not.

Has anyone tried the quests recently to check, could well be properties have changed over time since the quest was first designed?
