We have had the new chat for a couple of weeks now. Observations?
A poll as well, why not?

I've only been using it during EM Events. The Europa EMs have been very good in using it when an event involves searching over a wide area for something.

They make sure everyone has joined the 'Event' channel that is setup and then someone could say 'Look I found something here near Trinsic' etc and then everyone else can rush over to Trinsic.

The chat has its uses and I think its fantastic.

I like the chat but as we have seen, it can be a royal Pain in the ass since there are no ignore options, yet. but all in all I have found it useful.

Quite a few good things have come from it - making private channels for events proved handy, and similarly for small groups not made up entirely of party or guild members a private channel is handy.

Mostly the 'global' chat has been entertaining, and useful - but occasionally, has been global spamming of insults, highly offensive comments, and attempted gold-seller spam. Without someone watching chat who has the power to kick people off it, or temp ban for breaking the RoC, that's going to remain a problem. Sitting watching outright racist or homophobic abuse for half an hour is NOT an acceptable option, and dropping out of the entire system is the only action left. I can try report the author (but how is not clear to new players), and there's sure as hell no way to get action taken quickly enough... and meanwhile this stuff is appearing on computer screens around the world - not exactly the sort of 'presence' EA want to be associated with, I suspect. I'd also be reluctant to rejoin the system if I was just going to get another screenful of the same stuff, so a global " character '****' has been banned from the chat system" message might be useful.

I see no chance of EA/Mythic being prepared to invest money in paying people to monitor the system properly - on past form, they'll likely chuck that role onto existing staff. They don't seem able to handle the basic run of in-game issues, never mind loading more work onto them, so that seems unlikely to work well. We might get a half-baked 'reporting system' to flag issues, but without anyone immediately active on the other end of such a system, it's a token gesture of no real worth.

Overall, it's been mostly positive - but if there's no proper grip on running it, there's a real mess just waiting to happen.

voted mixed feelings, and this most likely only until an ignore feature is added, then I'm all behind it if only for the fact of the EM events having a communication tool for the entire shard

It certainly has it's moments... some funny stuff! :) A good idea that could be great. Maybe add ignore please?

I voted for "I think it's great."

I do see the negatives though. Lots of PvP smack talk goes on it.

But so does informing of Ilsh champ spawns that are being done, Doom runs about to start, questions about the game the answers to which are often highly useful, etc.

We need an ignore option, and we need the method they gave us to page on people who are spamming to ACTUALLY WORK.

I do know one thing. lol I've seen people in a very different light while watching all the samck talk on the Gen channel. Some people I really thought a lot of dropped a few tiles in my opinion, now. But, as well, I have talked to some really nice people I had never met before, so I guess it all evens out.

My feelings are mixed. Although I have seen various abuses of the system, I understand the overall utility. I like that it is making my community (Atlantic) smaller - allowing me to meet more people. However, I would likely use it more if I was able to add folks to my ignore list from abroad.

Well, the past 3 months I have been playing many different MMOs (no not WoW) ... some free, some not.

The commonality for the games that had a lot of people playing was not whether it cost money or not; rather, the quality of the chat system. I think a huge leap forward is being made by giving the UO chat system some love.

BUT, why are the devs making it so primative. It isnt like chat is a new concept in MMOs. Frankly, why waste time reinventing the wheel? Hop on dungeon & dragons online (DDO) to see what a good MMO comm system should be.

Individual channels is great, but the ability to see groups that are forming and "tell" to the group leader makes playing a game a totally new experience. Having a friends list that you cant dynamically see if you usual adventure buddies are online is useful.

I have a almost left UO a bunch of time because I rarely group and have run out of areas I can solo. I thought maybe it was just me and my playstyle. But that isnt the case at all. It is just too difficult to group in UO. I group all the time on other MMOs.

Mythic needs to really give the comm system in UO some love this year and I think subs will follow.

My 2 cents

I think it's great but it MUST have a reliable way to both ignore players and to page on someone and get results. The trash talk/vulgar language ect. is easy to shrug off for me most days but the spamming of walls of repeated text (or for a prodo shard the bot's spamming) needs to be addressed and soon.

Oh also I would love to have it in a separate re sizable window like the journal so I can follow both the global conversation and the alliance/guild/party/in game messages more easily, instead of having it scroll up my actual game screen.

It is great, but it could need some tweaks:

  • An ignore list.
  • An option to send private messages.
  • A friends list, so you can see who's online.
  • An option to check who's online in which chat group.

Ignore user.

I don`t care about anything else except to be able to ignore certain peaple.

Anything else beyond IGNORE is just a bonus.

I voted no.

It's like texting, I have no use for it. Never have, never will....unless I'm kidnapped and have to send a silent message, but, I don't see that happening.

I voted mixed feelings. As a new player, or a vet player with a new character on a shard, I can definitely see the advantages. Some of the chat going on just plain amuses me (yes even some of the "smack talk") and it's nice to be able to ask questions and get to know some people in the communities.

But we DEFINITELY need the ignore function sooner rather than later and the ability to page on someone like we are supposed to be able to. Having to leave the chat just because someone chooses to be a moron is a little ridiculous. You either have to leave completely or go to another channel and HOPE someone is there.

Overall, I like it and I think it's something UO has needed for quite a while. I'll just be interested to see how it works when all the functionality is in place.

I like it although I wish more people used the Trade channel. I think only being able to be in one channel at a time is very limiting.

Overall, I like it more than I thought I would and I hope they continue to add features.

I voted mixed feelings.

While in general I enjoy the feature and am glad we have it, the dev. team HAS to do something and do it soon to get the spammers OFF the chats.

Otherwise those whom do that endlessly, are just turning something valuable and enjoyable to everyone fleeing the spam or leaving the chat entirely defeating the purpose of our having it.

I do not enjoy seeing:

HAHAHAHAHAHHAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHAAHAHAHAH
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHH
HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHHHHHAHAHAHA
HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHHAHAHAHAHHHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAH

for lines and lines and MORE lines of endless of non stop spammnig stupids, line after line of it, non stop, covering our screen with stupidity
and for now; we have NO way to block em or shut them down, except to leave the chat.

They're not even spamming items for sale, just junk words. And so 40 folks feel they have to and do leave chats, on account of 1 or 2 players !

Hardly seems just or fair to those whom act normal in chat to have 40 feel they have to leave chats, cuz of 1 whom is making our eyes are bleed, due to the one or two idiots whom have nothing better to do with their uo time :(
than to SPAM on chat channels !

I'm with pretty much everyone else here...In theory it is great BUT you have to have an "ignore idiot spamming moron" button somewhere in the mix. Other than that, it's great!

I've actually had great success in getting these guys banned. 2 for 2. :D
I have gotten them banned as well but it's such a waste of my time when I could simply hit a button, find the moron listed there and ignore him/her. As it stands, I have to call a GM under the harassment gump and then have the Q hitting my screen every so often and then get the message that they are reviewing it and poof they are gone. Just seems easier if they would add something so I don't have to sit there on that char and wait for a GM when I would rather get on my warrior and go have fun.

I find it very useful on Siege Perilous...what better way to come to know the
behavior of those you have yet to meet. Clearly, what people speak says volumes. I will keep on listening...

Other than the gold sellers spamming, and the blue color sometimes being hard to read in the CC, it's great. I would like for the Devs to let us customize the chat color and adjust the transparency in the CC like we can in the EC.

It does need the "Ignore" button. And let us sign into both trade and general at the same time.

Honestly think it's a great addition to the game! It's easy to change to the channels you may want, or simply shut it off completely. (take your pick)

It only adds to the game, which is what is important...

Great addition!

I voted it's great. It obviously still needs some tweaking. I just had the opportunity to use it twice today, once for a rez and again looking for a crafter's recipe. It was amazingly efficient.

Excellent! Keep it going. I've not managed such a total success rate, at least not quickly - one I reported was around almost a full day, although not there the following day, so maybe EA did something, no way of telling....

At first, it really pissed me off because I didn't know how to create new channels. Once I figured that out, I must say it is ideal.

5/10 Is what I give the new chat system.

I like it. Have traded a few things, added to the guild population explosion, as folks could yell on global and find us. Been able to help a few folks out with bits and pieces too, which is cool. Been able to add folks to peerless n stuff too and generally expand our circle of friends and aquaintances. It's another dimension to community and I like it.

Have to agree with the ignore thing tho - there's a coupla people I could live without hearing from. And the page system needs to be very easy too, so we can keep getting rid of the gold bot spammers. At the moment, I'm using the verbal harrassment option, but if we had a list of who was on, we could maybe click on a name with a 'send page' option? Being able to custom colour would also be rather cool, although I can live without that if we can have ignore :)
