The Awakening - WHOPPING HUGE SPOILERS

As mentioned elsewhere on these boards, it has been apparently discovered that the Nexus rewards from the latest part of the arc can summon Exodus Minions into the waking world of Britannia.

During an EM event on Europa, which just ended tonight, we were warned not to take any more out of Exodus Dungeon, report the locations of all those that had been placed, and keep an eye on those that have been taken. Through careful questioning it became apparent that this was just roleplay, not a recall of broken items! Therefore they are working as intended, and for the advancing plot aren't supposed to be just nice shinies to walk off with. And we should feel guilty in game (if we claim to be virtuous anyway) if we did just grab for the shinies without asking what they actually did. They are supposed to be corrupting and dangerous...

Discussing the nexus with Nimauq and others just now, my thoughts kept returning to something... At first I wondered here on Stratics if this arc was sketching the rise of (no point spoiling this now, it's almost certainly wrong) The Fellowship in Ultima VII. That was where we roughly were in Ultima Online interpretations, having done UIV (Shadowlords) UV (Warriors Of Virtue) and UVI (Gargoyles). But the Nexus don't appear in Ultima Prime at all; and Exodus is Ultima III and had already been done.

But there is a physical parallel in the Prime series... which got me thinking about my time with that game again, and idly reading the wiki and...

HUGE DAMN SPOILERS

I MEAN IT

I think I stumbled upon the actual source of inspiration for this plot;

It's the discarded "Bob White" plot for Ultima IX

Bob White Plot - The Codex of Editable Wisdom, a Wikia wiki for Ultima and Ultima Online

For those not familiar with the game, Ultima IX had a much more lore-accurate, detailed and meaningful plot originally, known as "Bob White" but EA pressured Origin to release long before the game was likely to be ready. As a result it shipped incomplete, buggy and with a hastily reduced plot to include only the areas that were ready to go (and some dubious replacements for those that weren't; Britain Sewers was changed into Dungeon Hythloth for instance), whilst shoe horning in as many of the expensive to make videos as possible.

The result was a horrible mess. But the original plot begins like this;

Giant columns appear through out the land. Somehow the columns are affecting the climate, drying up some areas and flooding others, in addition there are tearing through the ground causing earthquakes and volcanism on a great scale. These climactic changes have caused wide spread famine in some parts of the world. In addition a plague began to run rampant through the land probably caused by the deplorable conditions. The people of Moonglow were able to produce limited quantities of food via magic, some of which they export through the land. Britain monks found that the venom of the Silver Serpents would provide relief from the plague, but was no cure. Something happened (you discover later) and Britain refused to send Serpentwyne to Moonglow and Moonglow refused to send food to Britain. The army divided and civil war is at hand.
Sound familiar?

But there's more! As the Wikipedia entry explains about the original plot;

Further, Lord British has become enfeebled and left government of the kingdom in the hands of a tribunal consisting of the lords of the cities of Moonglow, Britain, and Jhelom, but they have proved unable to deal with the crises and have fractured into mutually distrustful city-states that are, at the time the Avatar arrives, at the brink of war.
Ultima IX: Ascension - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Our Queen is of course not just out of government but under the ground. And on Europa at least, the 3 major cities involved in the plot? Britain (Home of Fynn Barrett and to which is he devoted even at the expense of the Realm), Jhelom and Moonglow (who are fighting a war between themselves)... a war many of us suspect is instigated by an individual man we know as Koba.

It won't be an exact parallel, because I believe the current Ultima Online Awakening structure is that the Dev Team code the wider events, but the actual connective plotting is down to each individual shard's EMs. It could be a different antagonist on your shard. Maybe... even Lord Blackthorn? However... food shortage. Incipient civil war. Now we're raising our own corrupting columns across the land, in the shape of the Nexus?

What's even more interesting is, after the official Ultima IX patch, a fan patch (1.19f) was released which, the rumours went, was programmed by one of the original Dev team for IX, disgusted at the released version and trying to bring it closer to the "Bob White" version of the plot. If you've played the game yourself, you can probably understand why. I know I found myself staring at the screen many times and thinking "No. Really?! Come off it! etc"

Here's a screen shot in fact (which I still have today for some reason) of where the game originally broke on my first attempted play through;

What you are looking at is where a vital key SHOULD have been, but completing one of the frankendungeons in the obvious order, rather than the shoe-horned, illogical tap dance way that didn't fit the plot as it now was, meant that the chests spawned empty of anything at all. And this was with the official patch! I had to restart from scratch at this point, and follow a walkthrough step by exact step... so I never got around to playing a third time through with the fan patch, hence I didn't recognise more than the "Corrupting Column" idea at first.

But wouldn't it be nice to think that history is repeating itself today, and fans at Mythic and amongst the EMs, fans of the long lost Ultima IX ideas, the ones that would have made that game truly shine, are bringing them to Ultima Online instead today? That we are seeing at least an attempt to salvage some of the intended joy that EA largely wrecked for fans of the series?

And I wonder what other parallels are there, if only they'd let us peak behind the veil?

Well, if they do want to know where some of those nexus are placed, there appears to be one near the NW corner of Luna on Napa. Was running around researching some stuff on the Abyss and used the teleporter tile to get out of the Warden house and landed in a house in Luna and was staring right at an ugly exodus minion that wanted my head!! Was glad I had a flute handy to lull it a bit and make a fast get-away. LOL

Nice connection of dots :)

I just had some Exodus Overseers spawn as I stood hidden at my rune library... They weren't anymore difficult than normal overseers and contained the normal loot.

As I mentioned on another thread...Anyone interested in seeing one on Chessy...The EM event on Sunday was to go to Exodus with Tinker and collect what was needed then build it..I participated before I realized what may be happening. Guess I can't claim innocence any longer ha.. Anyway, it's East of Moonglow alongside the mage's house used for events. 36.13N 122.38W.. Be warned, I heard as Martyna said, above, some have started producing Overseers's

That storyline is one possibility, though personally I wish they'd stay away from any of the drek that was written in "Ultima" IX (that entire game was written like poor fanfic, it played terribly, had pretty much no input from anyone who worked on previous ultima games, and found the need to change the backstories of entire races and change the events that happened in the past...)

Another, and I REALLY hope they go down this path instead as it would be a bit more interesting, is the return of Exodus. Since they recently added the shrine of singularity the shrine of dilligence should be nearby, which was merged with the mind of Exodus. True his other half, the dark core was cast into the void...but the dark core was merely a machine, and while it was banished it was never confirmed destroyed. (though it was kinda left floating around in space somewhere...)

There is also the fact that people are willfully inserting control cards back into the Exodus machinery which seems to be turning everything BACK ON, and palcing Nexus wherever they can lock one down because it's pretty....you know, a NEXUS...a "Hub" or "Communication Node" (AKA once again dropping the majority of the land under control of Exodus)

Ther'es also the little "poem" in the released story for the awakening, attempted translation based on how i think this is going

"When the yearning arises and all things are taken,
(Trans: When people get greedy and take the Nexus control points from the Exudus dungeon and willingly set them up)
The one sealed away will begin to awaken."
(Trans: Exodus will return with at least 100k hp and 1hk all the melee warriors while the tamers sit back nearly afk fighting him until he dies....then everyone gets bored and moves on because the story was barely an excuse to keep the players busy with a terrible....terrible grind)

just so you know who is returning ...
during the event, one of the EM played npcs was named lian vinre and just before he poofed away at the end, the EMs said his name was who he worked for - if you unscramble lian vinre, it spells Relvinian

I think, if I had a Nexus in my house, which I don't, I'd be seriously thinking of re-deeding it and hiding it away in a secure somewhere.

Neva! I may be nice but that darned nexus is keeping the mongbat eating freaks away from my mongbat ranch! I shall make so many exodus minions spawn on new mag on siege that the island will sink!

The above hidden information could just be the storyline on your shard. While the big events happen on all the shards (aside from poor Siege), the details are mostly different.

I will freely admit I'm still very much a novice when it comes to UO history, but something just jumped out at me while doing some reading. I had not realize until just today that 2012 is the 10th anniversary of the release of the Lord Blackthorn's Revenge expansion that took place in February 2002. Maybe that anniversary has had some small influence over the current event cycle?

Hmm..something to ponder. I too am a novice, when it comes to UO history. If nothing else, these events do encourage one to explore the past which is a good thing. Helps to give some perspective to events and adds a little flavor, imo.
