Yup, those days were the Wild West, Basara, with plenty of contenders....as I said, it's powerfully odd which one won. When someone told me that success in technology was marketing driven, rather than quality and innovation driven, I thought the guy was just plain nuts. Clearly I was never as utterly, completely and thoroughly wrong.

In the end, though, it's all about appreciating and enjoying what is, not what might have been. There is no shoulda been. It's okay to rant and reflect with intense vigor, but hanging onto such notions will drive ya crazy and suck the joy out of everything.

Okay, Beer, I've begun building my character at Lake Austin. Thanks to you guys and your sage advice, plus the travails of having sorta done one on Chesapeake, it's coming along much faster this time, and quite nicely. Will let you know when I don't feel like a complete dweeb and perhaps hook up with you.

Jonathan,

Welcome to Lake Austin! While the shard might not be very populated, it boasts a lion's share of friendly and helpful folks like Beer and Basara (I speak from experience here). I chose Lake Austin when I returned to the game last December after a nine year absence and am so glad I chose the shard.

I don't get to play a whole lot and am still doing lots of on-the-job training, so if you want to join up once in a while with someone who's still learning, send me a PM or give a shout when in-game.

How'd you make out on the dragon armor effort? I still have the other scales available ... I'm figuring the 120 white is insufficient for what you're doing.

Now if I can just hook up with Lustig for the rest of the stuff he wants, I'll be happy!

Beer,

Haven't had a chance to try any yet. Hoping to make a high fire resist piece or two for my fledgling sampire. I'll let you know how it turns out!

Dragon scales....120 not enough....for a moment I thought I'd missed a hint or advice until I understood this was an aside between two veterans. Me, I'm just making the 60 point crossing for the key skills, and slaying my first bunch of two headed Ettin (spelling?) beasts, bandages at the ready at every engagement, along with a Bind Wounds spell in the Paladin's "cookbook." Always going into engagements on a horse also helps, especially for the bait-and-drag when you want to drag two along to pick off individually. Such are the things a novice must use, though I am sure such tactics are but distant memories to your lot.

Thanks for the welcome, gortman. I must say that I was a bit worried when I saw "low" for the population, along with network latency that, for me, can be not so good at times. Nice to know that, although quantity may not be present, quality is different matter ;)

Staying with my theme of using the names of obscure aircraft types for character names, my guy on Austin is Eaglerock :) I have a rule when it comes to aviation: I never own or fly any aircraft younger than I am. Pardon the digression...I should create a macro for that sentence.

Okay, one game related question...well....two: what does Luck, as the game employs it, have to do with things? Second, whenever I use the "tac nuke" of two headed battle axes, I get new Lumberjack points. Any use for that? The Halberd has similar or better stats but does not divert my effort to a skill involved with felling trees.

I do recall that in the old days, building Lumberjacking skill was a way to build strength points faster. Thing is, with my Eaglerock guy, crossing the 95 strength mark has happened faster than with my Luscombe fellow on Chesapeake, focusing on swordmanship, parry, and tactics without making my guy an okay Lumberjack, much less wearing women's clothing and going out to bars.

Sorry...the whole Python reference thing with Lumberjacking must be older than the crust on the earth in this game.

Eaglerock? Heck! I saw you in old Haven last night! You know that bloke with the yellow/gold robe and blue cape? That was me, my friend. I wondered if that was you but you appeared to be having way too much fun for me to interrupt.

I holler if I see you again.

YES, I do indeed remember you. You paused for a moment but I was going through that phase of, "Zombies...kill Zombies...ah, another Zombie! Nah, skells spawning....ferget 'em...oh crap, there's that bot called the Impaler...wonder if I can take HIM yet....wonder why that guy in the fancy duds is sitting there...can't be a new guy."

Hate to go off on this black thing again, but where do you guys get those black horses? And the heraldic capes for the horses? Are there nifty saddles out there?

Most confusing damned thing at first was the horse business. That's the one item that's reeeely come down in price since the olden days. Never could afford them first time I played UO, or perhaps I simply wasn't paying attention. Most recent new players guide I found on this site advised getting one. Fine. Didn't say you didn't need tack, not even a saddle, to ride one. So I pay my ten Zombies (650 or so gold) and have no idea what to do next. When you're on foot the mounted guys just ZOOM past but I finally got someone to tell me, after I'd stabled mine for the want of an idea how to use it, and hunted all over Haven for a saddle to no avail, that all I had to do was name the animal and double-click on it to jump aboard...oh, and feed it apples occasionally - no need to find water, hay or grain. Guy didn't tell me I could fight from it without penalty. I won't recount the silliness the preceded THAT discovery.

Then there's the matter of, in the middle of a fight when you're trying to apply bandages, healing spells, and such to yourself and have to click a lot, of accidental double-clicking on yourself. You dismount and find you're attacking your own horse while it rears and whinnies in alarm....sometimes it tries to bolt while something is trying to hack you to bits. That part was...amusing. Had to wonder why they'd allow you to attack your own horse but that's the way it is, so I got used to it, even if my equine bot does not seem to.

So....done all my noob skill quests, collected my "blessed" arm armor, sword, shield, healing hands gloves and such, killed everything the island has to offer a bunch of times, stopped dying (though that business of having your avatar just sit there while something whumps on ya because you're trying desperately to double-click the whumping thing and find yourself dismounting your horse instead) though I'm saving the scary bot knight for later.

Good spot to try first in the real world on that shard?

Oh, and again, what role do luck points have in the scheme of things?

See ya soon, Beer :)

Lumberjacking gives a DI bonus to Axe weapons. Plus, there are 6 colored wood types for crafting wood weapons and armor with, that require high (if not GM) LJ to harvest.

As for Luck, it has two main uses.

The first gives a chance to increase the number of loot items on a corpse by one, and also to increase the number and intensity of properties on the items on the corpse - but still subject to the normal maximums for such things (Luck won't give something 6 properties, or raise a property over 100%).

It also applies to the chance of a minor artifact dropping into your pack off a paragon in Ilshenar (And off the named Mondain's Legacy creatures on all facets), and to the checks for drops in the point systems for Doom Artifacts and the 10th Anniversary artifacts (and the Virtue armor pieces) located in the classic Trammel/Felucca dungeons.

The latter probably is the more obvious use. The sliding scale is somewhat logarithmic - the bonus is in the single digits at low luck, but even 1300-1500 luck doesn't get it more than about 30-50%... There's writeups for Luck somewhere, but I'm too tired at the moment to remember exactly where.

Johnathan, you talk about attacking your horse reminds me that if you ever do join a guild be carefull because you can attack your guildmates and if you are in the Felucca facet then you can acidentally attack anyone. I guess this means you should learn to be careful in the middle of battle. I can recall hunting with a friend both of us relatively unskilled and we were trying to kill a corpser and a wandering healer came by and spoke at an inoportune moment. My friend accidentally targeted the healers words and was subsequently killed by him.

Oh, I too have received the opposite of healing from one of those NPCs when he was too close to something I was trying to target <blush>.

Wandered all over Lake Austin this evening and only found living souls at Luna, looking over what the vendors had for sale. One guy was riding something with Cretaceous Epoch fierceness but was too busy going through the line of vendor goods to strike up a conversation in response to my question regarding his forbidding looking ride. Thought I'd have more luck chatting with the guy on what looked like a giant lama but he only echoed my own thoughts about the goods for sale being largely junk.

Had a lengthy patch process tonight, probably switching me from my free trial self to my paid up guy setup. Although I'm paid up for six months I was still a free ride guy, as far as the game was concerned, for 14 days. Thus I got all the "Hey there, wanna make some quick gold?" solicitations but was then told the NPC had nothing for me, followed by a host message telling me that my lowly status as a free rider denied me such things. Same NPCs kept at it though, offering me and then telling me to bugger off. Clearly the host hadn't told them to shut up in the first place. Tonight that ended and I could play New Haven butler for 500 gold per escort errand.

So luck is, in this case, the luck of the corpse loot draw. Has nothing to do with being lucky in love or in combat unless the love of your life is corpse loot. Good. I'll ignore it in favor of stuff like physical resistance and such in my armor/ring/bracelet choices. Thanks for clearing that up for me!

One last question for this evening: when I hit tab the merry little spinning gold circle cycles through targets in my field of view. What key do I hit to make the selected item my combat target? Can I select multiple simultaneous targets?

Oops...one more "last" question: I was trying to enter the dungeon in downtown Brittain but could not get to the ladders. Got into the room where they are but I could not get to them. Yeah, I know there used to just be mostly rats down there in the olden days but I was curious.

Thanks folks :) Hope to eventually run into living souls but it was a Monday night after all.

You have to go up the steps, then go around the edge of the lip surounding the ladders, without falling off, to get to the ladders to go down. I just dipped down into the sewers to check. You can't recall into them anymore, due to an game-wide event 4-5 years ago, and there's a new section added that requires a password, that I can't remember, that's deadly enough for an experienced person (toxic swamp water, poison elementals, and a horde of orcs). You can see the edges of those nasty areas from within the main part of the sewers.

The patch earlier was for everyone, not a result of your upgrade kicking in. The clients have been fully functional for all levels of service as policy for as long as I can remember at least as far back as the Samurai Empire), with the only thing that tells the game which access you get being the log-in server. After all, even if you weren't fully upgraded, you'd still be seeing people with the stuff from all expansions, and the Devs learned to hate placeholder art (let everyone see everything, even if they can't use it, is a lot easier to program for).

I don't use that targeting system myself, so I can't give much help on it. If anything, you could always go into the Options menu that is on your paperdoll and set your own keys for switching targets, if you can't find out the defaults. No, it doesn't let you select multiple targets at once, but I think it has separate cycle processes for friendlies and opponents/monsters.

Impaler made me sweat bullets a few times early on. He's really a nice fellow once you get to know him ... over and over and over ....

The black horses ... er, like I was riding or are these perhaps something else? I suppose mine might look black but it is an Ethereal Horse. It's a Veteran reward (3 years I think). When I dismount it becomes a statue in my pack - also when I die. <shrug>

Horses from the stables ... buy one, name it, feed it. Take REALLY good care of it and about one week later when you feed it, it will bond with you. Once bonded, they will follow you via recall and sacred journey if you are not mounted on them. Also, should they die in battle with you, you can get there ghost to follow you and get them rezzed at Veterinarians ... or by a Tamer with sufficient skill.

When battling anything, drag the foes health bar up and target that - spells and weaponry. Just click the foe once and drag off ... the health bar should show up. Go to town.

If you are using the CC (Classic Client, aka 2D) there is UO Assist that is approved for usage under the old/defunct UOPro program. One-time registration and some of the battle-zone clicking can disappear. The EC (Enhanced Client) has hotbars and key bindings that can also aid in your experiences. Then again using the CC macro ability without UOA can be helpful.

So there are ways to alleviate some of the problems. However I can't say PETA would be thrilled to know you beat your horse.

Ahhh, I see you are referring to the Dark Knight who is not available to those who start with the CC. Thus I infer you are using the EC and you may disregard any references to UOA and the CC made above!

Okay ... he wants to get stomped somewhere other than Haven. Gortman, Basara ... what do you think? I'm sort of a proponent for the legacy dungeons for training to an extent ... Despise, Deceit, Shame at least. Sanctuary might be fun for his first look at an Orc Brute. Think we could get the rookie thru battle with a Greater in Destard or the Demon Temple? Then on to the rest of the world ... Dojo, Abyss, Labyrinth, Doom, etc. What would you suggest?

Hail Johnathan,
I've enjoyed following your adventures.
It sounds like you're using the new Enhanced Client (EC, or sometimes incorrectly referred as 3D) because you're getting the gold circle under your targets.
You may want to read this guide for a better idea on how to use that client better. http://www.spellweave.com/saclientuserguide.html

Once you learn how to effectively create macros, you will get a much better experience. For example, one button will apply the bandages on myself without me needing to click on myself.

A few other pointers to mention. Turn down all skills that you don't want to train in. For example, you seem to have Lumberjack turned up, therefore you will gain in it while swinging any type of axe. That's fine if you want to have that skill, but I find the bonus from Lumberjack on a swordsman/axe wielder to not be too handy. I'd rather have a crafter with lumberjack in order to harvest wood.

I look forward to following your progress.

Oh and I forgot to answer your question about the TAB button. In EC, tab will scroll through the enemies. "W" puts you into war mode. The Classic Client (CC) uses TAB to go to war mode, hence some people might tell you to "Tab out of war mode".

I think Despise would be a great first choice because of the nice progression of creatures who inhabit that dank, foul place (lizardmen through the ogre lords). Jonathan, if you want, I'd be happy to give you a swamp dragon I'm currently training (probably be finished with the training this coming weekend). It's a mount that, with dragon barding, provides extra protection that a horse does not. See this thread by Basara: http://vboards.stratics.com/showthread.php?t=212074. My smith can also make you exceptional dragon barding to put on the swampie.

I agree with gortman, Despise is a perfect dungeon for new players. There are almost no spell casters to mess you up while you're getting a feel for your skills. There are titans that cast but they are in a farther away corner and one elemental caster in another remote corner.

Plus, you have the chance at an Anniversary reward that can drop in your pack as you progress in there (and any Anti-Virtue dungeon). You might get a lucky statue or look at the list:

Again, THANK YOU! So often I've found, ESPECIALLY in the aviation forums (talk about old guys yelling at kids to get off their lawn), there is not much patience for new guys who do not first find all the pertinent threads - many from long ago - before daring to address the elders. Might make sense if you're dealing with a forum regarding an aircraft type of which fewer than 100 examples were ever made....SEVENTY years ago, but not forums through which have passed more people than the number of active pilots in the United States. But I digress.

Actually, some early online games were like that too. Being new was regarded much like sin. You had to perform penance for arriving late. Took me six frigging years of redesign to change Air Warrior from an ace dominated game to a community focused world. The original designer who turned it over to me was such a nice guy he was appalled by the sheer hostility of AW. He went on to create Multiplayer BattleTech on GEnie - that game I mentioned where the design drove vets to fight over who gets the new guys. It was EGA, alas, and there was never the money to move it into the larger world of contemporary graphics - not in its complete form.

You didn't need fine graphics in the early days because the sheer novelty of the MMOs drew people to them. The term Massively Multiplayer had not yet been coined, of course. We looked at it in a way the general public could never have understood. To our minds there were games you played online as opposed to online games.

The MMOG term codified the distinction between just a few players against another few, and the shared world game of integrated encounters of any number of people that had consequences across this virtual world. I recall staring in amazement at a box - a DEC VAX or somesuch early server - realizing that a world that truly meant something for a large number of people - existed in that little container. The whole world in a box. Astonishing!

I see that some of you boast playing the entire stand-alone Ultima series. Me too. Garriot had a genius for elegance. Two or three, at the most, game systems that carried a compelling experience on its strong back. UO was not designed by him, though, and was anything but elegant. Rather it was a gazillion game systems leaving it up to the players which to embrace. Who could have predicted, for instance, that fishing....FISHING would be a popular activity in the early days. It warmed my heart to visit that island fishing village with the Scots/Irish name last night where the vendors sell fish and fishing gear.

Good online game designers must take a VERY DIFFERENT approach. My meeting with Garriot, for example, went badly precisely due to this difference. Took me to a fancy eatery to discuss an idea he had for a new game. He remained furious that some player killed him on UO's opening night. "But, Richard, that was PERFECT," I replied. "What could better symbolize the moment when you turn the world over to the players? It's their world now." This prompted an immediate, "Check please!"

Online game developers, no matter how smart they are or how smart they think they are, are ultimately servants. They seek not player praise. Their satisfaction comes more from the heart...or it should. There remain online game devs who get mad because people play the game in ways the devs never intended. Silly souls! Many EQ devs were like that.

I know....TLDR but playing UO again does stimulate memories.

I went to Despise some nights back. Not a good solo player experience. My skills were so weak that I had to employ the bait-and-drag to kill off the Ettins and Elementals, by which time they were spawning again. The approach of trying to kill one and run onto the other didn't work. These are definitely designed to be multiplayer experiences.

Wow, I had no idea about being able to res the horses. Odd how you can develop a bond with an NPC horse. After one death I found him just wandering around and got back on him. Once, I failed to find any horse corpse but I also failed to find him in "living form" either. Ran all over the damned island looking for him, odd as that sounds. Then, on another occasion I returned to find him dead. Had no idea I could find his ghost.

I've moved the most used and useful commands to that hotbar tied to the function keys. As you said, it makes life MUCH easier. I was wondering about that damned black rectangle with the enemy's health bar across it. Thanks for explaining its usefulness, Beer.

Thanks for explaining those vet rewards. Mostly, when I see players with something unbelievably exotic, I simply shrug and think, that's WAY beyond me right now. Right now I'm filled with joy the moment I see, say, swordmanship hit 70.

I've encountered only one Japanese style warrior thus far. Did this addition simply not catch on or did it catch on some places more than others? Or is it too new?

Not sure how we hook up. I take it that the General channel is heard by anyone on the shard tuned to it. What are your call signs so I'll recognize you guys when you're there? Or just call me. As I said, my handle is Eaglerock on Austin. It's hard to read the text - a transparent blue - from the radio, thus I might not pick it up the first time.

I'm at the stage when I'm in there a LOT ;)

Again, I deeply appreciate the warm and informative advice.

I stay the heck off the channels ... sorry. Usually I have enough game spam on my screen that I'll lose any chat in it ... and that's simply my miner/smith! <shrug>

The bloke scoping you the other night was my Paladin (PvM only and then not capable beyond a certain stage that is yet to be found) - Spin Nakor. Say that fast and think sailing. <another shrug>

If you were in the swamp part of level 3 Despise (down the stairs) it is a fast respawn and you do need to work at it some. Perhaps we need to run a duo and even upstairs in the Lizardman area try things out so you get used to what you need to do. I can keep ya healed and even tank for you if it gets tough.

Do you have a Lizardman slayer or anything of the like? That'll make life easier. For Level 3 Despise, Ettins are Repond (humanoid super-slayer) and Earth Elementals either Earth Ele (foe specific) or Elemental (super slayer) slayer. If you have no slayer we may need to do some shopping.

Slayers do double dmaage to the foe it is designed to be used against. Combined with Paladin Enemy of One you can deal some damage. Fast speed with SSI (Swing Speed Increase) is also a good thing ... more hits per second. Consecrate Weapon is a short-duration Paladin spell that allows the weapon to damage using the foes weakest resistance ... thus that and EoO are a good combo.

I would be happy to go with you to Despise sometime to watch your back and hopefully keep us out of trouble and mostly out of gray robes. :)
Here's an alternative if you're on your own, however: simply ride/walk around Britannia and fight creatures as you happen upon them. I did that when I came back to the game and had a blast rediscovering the old places and fighting creatures along the way (although the first time I saw a Solen - one of the giant ants - I ran away with a pounding heart, wondering what evil nightmare had come alive on my computer monitor!). If you want to know where specific creatures spawn, try the Stratics Hunter's Guide (http://uo.stratics.com/hunters/index.shtml. It has a nice advanced search option where you can input specific parameters and it will spit out a list of appropriate creatures. For example, if you have around 70 skill in swordsmanship, to make gains in that skill you will want to fight creatures whose wrestling skill is roughly 10 points higher or lower than this. Go to the advanced search, plug in 70 wrestling with a range of 10, have it sort on wrestling skill, and voila: Link to advanced search output. Click on any of the creatures listed and it will take you to its page, complete with links to where the creature is located. Maybe not quite as fun as simply riding around discovering what's in the countryside, but a resource nonetheless.

Your supposition about General chat is correct. In case you haven't tried it yet, to say something in the channel to which you are tuned, precede your text with a comma. I learned that the hard way, typing loads of messages that no one saw because I forgot the leading comma! Anyway, I have several characters in development on our shard and I'm guessing most folks including Beer have multiple characters as well. Best bet would be to just call out our Stratics names - do you agree, Beer?

Many great folks on Lake Austin helped me get started again, so I am more than happy to pay it forward. I should be on for at least a little this evening and will look for you.

My only serious character for battle is Spin and he is not optimum for a lot of stuff. However, he's a decent enough tank for younger players if need be. For pretty much all of Despise, Deceit, Shame he can tank or draw off things if needed.

I built him as a support character with high Healing and Chivalry to aid in the injured and fallen. I do try to keep his Compassion reasonably high so resurrections have decent HP when they come back to life.

Johnathan is on EC, so he doesn't need to use the comma. He can just select the channel in the chat box and it stays in global chat mode represented by the different color.
I create a separate global chat window tab and pull it out in the corner. If I'm too busy to look at that global, I merge it with my main chat temporarily.

Johnathan, if you hit 70 in your weapon of choice as well as Tactics (warriors should have it) you've unlocked a new feature.... "Primary Ability" or AKA Weapon Special Move. At Skill level 90, you can start using Secondary Ability. You might have these Icons on your hotbar as F1 & F2 by default? They light up when toggled on.
This explains it better: http://www.uoguide.com/Special_Moves

Wish I'd read this stuff before afternoon turned into evening.

Did the walk about, as one of you fine gentlemen suggested. Apart from some tree-like thing aptly named the Reaper that shot some weird stuff at me in passing that made my guy nauseous and beyond the reach of that Paladin spell....ends with the Latin for vomit....I was okay.

The soldier ants, terrible as they appeared, died easily. Felt mighty bad for the headless thingies...didn't want to kill them but they kept walking into my path and they're one hit kills. Those orange Ogres growl and grunt more effectively than they fight. No problem there.

Yes, Beer, I'm using all the Paladin spells I can. Yeah, it's magic but it's not magic without steel. Been consecrating my weapon, so to speak, unleashing Divine Fury, binding wounds, trying to use that undo spell spell (that one craps out the most) and found a use for Sacred Journey later in the evening.

Basically I was getting all full of myself. My horse was even liking me. I'm an idiot. No fool can really be okay in a game that's at least five years deep or twice that.

While dropping my loot at the bank I ran into a human. Guy named Nikka. Was chatting it up a bit and suddenly he did a "wait here" and zapped himself into some netherworld. Shortly he emerges from what seems to me a parallel universe with a bag of goodies. Lots of blessed or magical bows of all sorts. How do I tell this guy striving to help me out that I'm a steel on steel guy? Suddenly he recalls that I had indeed told him that and *poof* he's vanished again.

He returned with the most amazing thing I could imagine: two rune books. These were game elements I never even attempted to comprehend before or since, along with anything to do with magic. Dunno if any of you have read Terry Goodkind's Sword of Truth series, but I've always felt like one of those D'Haran soldiers who say, "We're the steel on steel, you [the hero, Richard with "the gift"] are the magic on magic." And, like D'Haran warriors, magic scares the excrement out of me. Rune books! Holy crap...rune...books. Traveling magic seems anything but scary.

He also gave me rings and bracelets that made me mightier, some scrolls that were "cursed," and two weapons that were entirely too mighty.

One was an axe that sang like that Sword of Truth when chopping up foes. Felt happy to have the weapons, and immensely grateful, but they felt unfair somehow, so I stuffed them back in my pack after a few uses.

Ah, but the rune books...one for dungeons, one for Trammel travel spots. No more hunting for glowing eggs. The travel one says it has so many charges. Dunno how to recharge it. My god, I'd have to learn something about magic to recharge the thing....yikes. Went to the local Mage shop but those were NPCs and didn't sell chargers for the books.

How do you recharge a rune book? Gots to know. Click on rune, hit Sacred Journey, BANG...I'm there, dude. Magic to move around, just so it's not to escape a fight seems fine to me....well, and for healing. Just so long as it's not a primary weapon.

So, how does a wonderful time turn to sh*t? Easy.

Wandering around I decided to see what the desert was like. Thus began my trip to hell. Scorpions, no problem larger than those mongbat nuisances. Snakes. Feh! Then I came across a cave not listed as a dungeon on any map. Something told me, DON'T GO IN THERE. So....after parking my horse outside, in I went.

Nothing. So out I came. As I prepared to mount my horse suddenly all manner of Orcs appeared as if out of that parallel universe that Nikka used. This mob of misery pounces on my poor horse. I run like hell. They do not follow beyond the desert boundary.

But...but...THOSE BASTARDS KILLED MY HORSE!!! So I sneak back and start killing those neckless monsters one by one. Sneak into the desert realm, one comes out, kill it, run, repeat....until something called a Mage Orc zaps the bejesus out of me and, again, I run like hell, knowing I can't go back.

Feeling like a moron I walk along the road for a bit. More soldier ants...a bunch this time. As I'm killing them off, one of them dies and sprays it's guts on me, killing me. First death in Austin. Worse, after I get rezed, I find my corpse surrounded by those things, with bingo tools to fight them. After running some circles around them I manage to grab my corpse self. Then I have to pick them off to find the one with my gold inside.

Oy vey. Sad and listless I trudge down the road again. Bastards killed my horse. Had he been a ghost there was no way to get to him. Bastards....killed...my...horse.

Came across another one, just sitting calmly along the road. Figured I'd try to jump on him. Instead, somehow, I went into combat mode and killed the poor thing! Now I'm the ******* who killed a horse. Lost lots of karma for that trick.

Figured I'd take it out on those Ettins and Elementals at Despise. No wandering healers outside. Didn't care. Well...thought better of it, given my streak of stupidity, so I headed back to Haven and laid waste to the Ettin population there, sitting upon my new steed.

Then to complete the brain dead trifecta, I equipped myself with that axe almighty and runed my way to ruin. Zapped myself into the Dark Knight den. Jerk wouldn't fight me. Instead he zapped my horse to death...******* killed my horse!! Then he zapped me to death. Never fought me. Just zapped me to death too. If the miserable Curr is all decked out in armor, why the hell is he using....magic.

Found myself suddenly outside atop a pile of corpses just outside of town, but rezed. Now my feet didn't work any longer. Instead I glided around like a spirit. Glided to the stables, bought my third horse of the night, stabled it, glided to the Paladin room upstairs and plopped my virtual self in a chair and logged.

Reading your links and tips now, gentlemen. No more dungeons without a posse. No more going into unmarked caves. No more killing mammoth ants. No more facing the Dark Knight without a tac nuke. Damned Orcs killed my horse, those bastards, and the Dark Knight wouldn't fight me. Orcs, Knight, and I all killed horses this evening, bastards all.

Did I ask how you recharge a rune book? Yeah...think I did.

God help me, I love this game, though. So much deeper than I remembered or imagined.

Don't have a weapon called a Lizzard Man slayer, Beer. That mighty axe Nikka gave me kills many things fast, and tonight has made me overcome my squeamishness when it comes to special smiting tools.

Asked Nikka where to go (vendors) for stuff that's reasonable. He said there is no such place in Austin, alas. Been to all the towns now and I think he's right. Only place with lots of vendors I could find was Luna. Nikka said he wished Luna could be nuked so that everything would no longer be concentrated only there.

In short I'd be happy to go shopping. Not seeing human smiths as in days past who sold you special stuff they made or could repair your stuff in exchange for some gold and some ingots. They used to just sit out there in one corner of Brittain. Nikka said that Brittain had been nuked at some point.

He said there were indeed craftsmen in the game, but not in the open or on a make to order basis.

Sorry for the nonsense about charging rune books. Found some material about them and finally understood, even though the word, charge, is wholly misused. In fact, I seldom encounter a word as misused as it was with this subject. It's not a credit card, the cost of a meal applied to a hotel room, an accusation, a battery, or a tense atmosphere in a room. It's just a bloody way around filling the world with nearly as many runes as gold pieces.

Odd that they're created by scribes, yet they're not called text runes.

Thanks for the creature feature, BTW, gortman. That site was overwhelming but very, very informative plus, as you said, the calculator was nifty. Odd that very threatening looking and sounding beasts, such as Corpser, can be done in with a couple of whacks with a sword, whereas something with an innocuous name, like Lich, are powerfully onerous.

Added the special moves to my hotbar, Hildebrand, as I've finally passed 70 in sword, parry and tactics. Took...time. Zombies beyond counting and other creatures died to bring me those points.

Again, my sincere thanks.

We are gonna have to link up ... my scribe can crank out Recalls for you in the hundreds. That is what you recharge runebooks with. Gate scrolls as well, but Recalls are typically less expensive if buying from player vendors.

However, you need use no charges as a user of Chivalry! You will use Mana, but that can recover easily. Tithe gold at an Ankh ... there is one in New Haven, but any shrine should suffice.

When ye wish to travel by magical means, open the runebook and select the exact page the rune is imbedded in. Do not use the gems in the first 2 pages! Page selection is by the circular indications at the page bottom.

Check that ye have the correct page, insure you are prepared for battle if it is an area likely to be dangerous. Select the option for Sacred Journey for that rune! Presto and ala-kazam! You are transported to that locale. It works in this manner for the Paladin as tithing points substitute for reagents that would be consumed during the Recall or Gate spell.

I tried looking in New Haven for you but I had ferocious lag last night and ended up not being able to play. My normally very stable ISP was even being affected - with pings as high as 250 on the initial hop after me! Needless to say the Level3.net and ALTER.NET backbone to EA was also sub-par in performance. I will be trying tonight, however ... after 7 PM Eastern.

I know of a shop that has decent prices for slayer weapons if they are stocked. They sell fast. And it is not in Luna. Nikka has the correct attitude as far as how I feel about the place ... but it does have its uses.

Non-Luna vendors are few and far between but they do exist. One needs to search for them.

So....charge and recharge are....<blush>....the correct terms, Beer. I was soooo confused when I read the material....obviously.

I'm an old gamer, in both senses of the word. At this stage of a game, my session are entirely too long. Past the 55 mark in Paladin skill points, plus Nikka gave me a bracelet that allegedly adds 9 more. Been using the spells all the damned time to build the points, and tithing like mad to make those Egyptian gods happy :) Thus plugging in the Rune Book battery is a moot point then?

We'll hook up soon. In the meantime I've been looking over those Stygian Abyss quests. That ornate axe Nikka gave me is one POWERFUL weapon. Don't want to wear it out killing Ettins, brigands, and Ogres....saving it for serious smiting and it looks like they'll be some occasions for that shortly, though I'm certainly open to going shopping with ya ;)

Can't let those bastards kill my horse again!

Yeah, the lag has been nuts since the patch.

Jonathan,

Sounds like you are having some adventure! Sorry I didn't get a chance last night to find you (weather was too nice here in Denver and my daughter wanted to visit the playground - how can I say no?), but I'm sincerely hoping tonight will give me a chance.

I think Beer covered the rune book charges and how you don't need them if you're using Sacred Journey. One nice feature of rune books is that you can set a rune in it to be the default. Then simply targeting the book (without having to open it), you cast Sacred Journey and voila - it takes you to that default destination. You can then set a macro with a corresponding hot key to perform that operation. This can be quite handy when you come across a situation you'd rather not fight your way out of - with a single key press, Sacred Journey is cast and you are transported to your safe default destination, like home or a town.

Regarding your horse, there is a game feature called bonding that will help you out enormously (see http://uo.stratics.com/content/professions/taming/taming-pets.shtml#bonding). Buy a horse, feed it, stable it, leave it in the stables for seven real world days, unstable it, feed it again, and it should bond to you (you will see a message to this effect). Bonding allows several things to happen:
* If the pet dies, it will become a ghost and can be resurrected either by a player with sufficient vet and animal lore skill or, for a fee, by an NPC vet (see http://uo.stratics.com/php-bin/show_content.php?content=31023).
* A dead, bonded pet will still obey movement commands, so you can get it out of a dangerous area if it perishes.
* If the bonded pet is following you (i.e., you aren't mounted on it), it will follow you to your destination if you use Sacred Journey. Non-bonded pets can only follow if you use the magery Gate Travel spell.

One other thing to note regarding pets: they have stats and skills just as characters do, so you can train them up. A fully trained horse should be able to survive on its own longer than a freshly purchased/tamed one.

Maybe you, Beer and I should hook up in-game soon to go exploring a bit and have some fun. There is still a ton of game content I haven't experienced but with some things I can help.

Well thought out system, gortman. There's clearly a random element in there beforehand. Some go into auto-wander-off until you go through that business of one left click on 'em and tell them to stay, with an annoyed whinny response. The one the Orc mob mobbed, though, simply did as I wanted from the first.

Given my penchant for anthropometric regard for an NPC horse, much the way a little girl regards her doll as alive, I'm cautious about employing this feature, lest I add "Those bastards killed my horse!" to my sig file :)

Odd, because I'm not fond of horses in meat-space.

As I explore the world now, I have to take back my bold statement that persistent worlds are idiotic. As I read the forums more I'm seeing that all sorts of things mean so much to people that can only be served my such a model, much the way virtual horses trigger a nerve I didn't know I had. I've enjoyed other MMO models, but I understand the appeal more for this one, wholly apart from adventure game systems.

Downside is the post apocalyptic feel of wandering the Austin shard. I'm sure it's like many that carry the Low designation of the shard list. All these empty towns, all these magnificent structures that feel abandoned, all these Machu Picchus.

Occasionally I come across player houses of magnificence unimaginable in the original game, laid out with fountains and gardens, with rooms full of lovingly collected items I had no idea existed, accompanied by the tender soundtracks of the area they inhabit. Then I come across an abandoned zoo, with each fenced off area having a sign attached describing the species of animal that once lived there, guarded by an NPC zoo keeper.

Odd because, wandering the roads, all manner of virtual beasts move about. It's all quite charming, apart from the long horn cattle that walk around as if wounded. The animals have taken over. When I see several wandering healers along the road, though, I know a creature of a very different sort lurks ahead. At this stage of my character's life, it's usually a creature I've not encountered before. That's cool....so long as it doesn't kill my horse ;)

Once I hook up with people on a regular basis, this feeling will certainly change. In the meantime there is lot to do and all manner of places to explore.

There is, in our culture, an insatiable lust for the new. Thus the paradox: as the game grows richer with time, the players become fewer. Unless my memory fails me, Stratics began as a UO site.

I have to wonder, though, given the short, short history of the medium, if there remains the possibility of something we see a lot of in the culture as well: the fashion of rediscovery; what is old becomes new again and the maturing of the gaming press beyond reporting only the newest, and therefore - in their minds - coolest things.

Off to the Abyss quests!

Once I get a little less busy in RL I can try to help some too - many can vouch that I've been known to grab my crafter and craft stuff with runics specifically for a new or returning player - or just loot my own stash of high-end crafted items.

My vendors are currently down, because no one was buying. Well, other than my music gear vendor in Luna.

Thank you, Basara! Was wondering why the vendors had bingo good stuff. The finest stuff now, though, lay beyond the durability of armor or the smiting power of imbued, enhanced, blessed or enchanted axes or swords. It's all these spontaneous quests I find myself going on with veteran players to help equip this aspiring Paladin.

Gortman tried to raise me on the radio but I was on such a quest - this one for a cape needed to complete a set, all the pieces of which were needed to make me a more mighty noob. Thanks for trying to ring me up, and sorry I was otherwise engaged at the time.

After that quest met with a dead end I met a guy in what appeared as a gal's outfit just outside the New Haven bank. S/he asked if I needed help. Happy at the moment with my working clothes and tools, I declined. S/he apologized before noting that my armor was....not so good. I was not wearing the Mongol outfit at that moment that another player had given me...it required a complete set of items to make it stronger than what I had but the fellow who gave it to me told me to keep it. There remains a chance, however thin, that I'll eventually be able to complete the set.

"I'll make you better armor than you're wearing," was the reply. Next thing I know I'm outside a stone building with metal doors sitting on an island of ice. S/he leads me to a workshop within. "That stuff you're wearing has to go," she asserted (I'm going to stick with she). I was told to strip. Uh....okay, I guess.

Much whacking and cutting sounds later I was standing in probably the most stylish warrior outfit I've yet beheld, all of it labeled, Exceptional.

"Got band-aids?" she asked. Didn't know if that was slang for rings and things. Nope, she meant bandages.

"Yeah, about 250."

"That won't do. Give me a moment."

Next thing I know she's presenting me with a box, also deemed Exceptional. "We have to improve your skills. Follow me," she said as I passed into one of those suddenly summoned glowing eggs.

Next moment I'm standing in a fenced in corral filled with sheep. "Strip....EVERYTHING," she says. Again I strip. She gives me a box containing 2000 bandages and countless buckler shields. I was told to equip myself with a buckler, target all the sheep, and drop out of war mode.

There I am, in just undies and a buckler, attacked on all sides by angry, noisy sheep, having to hit my heal button (I've got bandage application mapped to a function key) often.

"Are your points rising?" she asks. Slowly the parrying and healing points tick up by tenths. "Turn your Intelligence arrow to down," she adds noting that my intelligence was too high for a warrior. "Now, move around slightly occasionally," she commanded.

The points rose; my intelligence declined.

Old UO was full of scammers. My new armor was gone, my old armor lay on the ground of the sheep pen. I was under constant attack by sheep.

"Forgot something," she said. "Be right back." She returned with several bottles of virtual booze. "Drink it all!" she insisted.

Now I was nearly naked, under relentless attack by noisy sheep, and drunk. Bucklers would fail but I had MANY replacements. I figured she'd just vanish and spend many pleasant subsequent hours laughing. When she put me on a party channel, left, got on the party of two radio and asked if I had a place to put stuff other than the bank, I figured she was about to make her exit. Noobs don't have houses, not on ice islands, not anywhere.

At roughly 2AM she returned. I'd lost track of time amid the sheep mob. I thought of gortman and what he'd think of THIS.

After she called off the sheep, we returned to the land of ice and endless snow. My character was stumbling drunk, spouting *hic* in twos and threes. My character was nearly a moron but my parrying was awesome and my healing skills much, much better. Oddly I was stronger too.

She directed me a large box, no doubt Exceptional. By this time I'd managed to at least put on a shirt from my pack, all battle attire long gone. She asked me to open it. All my gear was inside. She gave me a key and told me how to use it.

"You can keep your stuff here. Don't lose the key. It's the only one. You also have a place to stay." She directed my attention to another box and told me the game name of its owner who also shares that icebound retreat.

After showing me the message board where I could leave notes for her, she handed me runes for the house and the sheep pen. I'd already told her I had rune books for other places.

After cautioning me to mount my horse before logging off she left.

Afterward I zapped myself back to Haven, dyed my cape and sash to a color that went better with the new armor, slew a dozen or two Ettins to try the armor out. Then I killed some brigands for their boots - a calf high set and some tall ones. She'd dumped my boots in favor of her Exceptional sandals. I wanted the option.

One Sacred Journey back to the Ice Age refuge and thus concluded the most puzzling yet interesting evening I have ever spent in an MMO.

Gortman....now perhaps you understand why I couldn't quite explain fully over the radio why I couldn't hook up with you this evening :)

That's one extraordinary site you've created, Hawkeye!

Been reading the tales and they are indeed both fun to read and keenly illuminating, organized like serious adventure tales, complete with a cast of adventurers. Wonderful stuff!

So, it's Basara whose arms and armor factory shut down and laid off its workers. Heard that from another guy who said his craftsmen had been idle. In Luna, most of the vendors are out of stock, not that their sort of stock appealed to me. There's this one building reminescent of Bed, Bath and Beyond, with nothing but home furnishings and clothes advertised as, "garish." For 15 gold they'll sell you a rune back to the place....uh....that's nice ;)

Quick question, again about runes and runebooks. As I said, the owner of the Ice Age castle gave me runes back to the sheep pen and back to the castle. She said to put them in my runebook for safe keeping. Said it was a simple drag and drop procedure. "Simple," has proven a dangerous word for me. All the possible slots in the books I was kindly given are filled. Can I buy and empty rune book and just drag and drop runes into it? Where can I buy these blank books? I read there are rune libraries but I'm not sure of their purpose.

I have the creepy feeling that, yet again, the larger picture eludes me, alas.

Finally, what special properties does a Lizardmen Slayer have....well....I figure they - duh - are used to kill Lizardmen.

Been having an easy time of it with what I have. I found - as I'm sure you all know - that with no character collision detection and beasts such as Lizardmen and Ettins who swing their weapons at a slow rate, all you have to do is charge through them on your horse, back and forth, to kill them very quickly without taking so much as a blow oftentimes.

Guess that wouldn't work so great in dungeouns though.

Runebooks can be purchased at player vendors. Some players leave runes to their shops lying around on the ground in the cities or you can just go look at the various houses around where you happen to be. The technique you describe of runnign through monsters is called jousting by many. It works pretty good but the more powerful beasts will still hit you very hard.

You can purchase a sextant from the local NPC tinker. Clicking on it will give you the coordinates for where you are. If you look at the map in the Stratics map page you can find the closest location that you have a rune for or that there is a moongate and start from there. It used to be a good skill to have and if you want to do things on your own it is probably still good to have a map and sextant to work with and know how to use them.

WARNING: the following post is off-topic and may contain material disturbing - or just plain boring - to some.

First, something a bit serious that I want to make clear. I had nothing to do with the development of UO. I was put on the UO dev team to train me in the ways of Origin. I was hired to be a designer of the space combat side of Privateer Online. It was to be a game based on the Wing Commander world except with space ops integrated and interdependent with the development of more traditional MMO worlds - these worlds being planets.

I made it into the credits for the Renaissance edition simply because one of the designers - Toad - liked me and used to attend my GDC talks. I was in the middle of my fifteen minutes at the time.

Privateer Online (original in-house name: Wing Commander Online) was pretty far along when it was canceled. As I noted, UO was developed nearly in secret at Origin. When it hit, it hit big, thus attracting unfortunate intense attention by EA corporate.

All of Origin was suddenly told it would only produce online games. They had many very successful stand-alone game franchises at the time and there was, thus, a mass Exodus of developers from the studio. EA thought online was the future but they came to this conclusion prematurely. It was like leaping off a cliff because you envisioned a bridge being built there one day.

This is why so many of us veteran online guys were brought in. Sadly, EA did not understand the medium. They said, when killing Privateer, that we'd not yet fully capitalized on the UO property, hence the UO II project. They did not understand that online games lasted many years, they need ongoing care and development, and sequels were just the most terrible idea possible in the medium.

Worse still, UO II was a shadow of UO. It was my sad duty to review it for the company - LOTS of resources had already gone into it - and recommend its death. I knew its designers well and felt I should sit down with them before submitting my report to get their feedback first. No knives in the back. Plus I never overlook the possibility that I can, at any time, be completely full of s*hit. Their response was an enormous sigh of relief. They felt as I did about it but were either afraid to say anything or had resigned themselves that they were powerless to fix it.

EA would never go on to produce a successful MMO again. It bought a studio or two that had, but EA-directed MMO development was a long string of abject failures going on 13 years.

Sorry this isn't one of my cheery tales but UO was a game of both enormous importance due to its sheer merit and timing, and extraordinary destruction due to the failure of decision makers to comprehend its success.

Damn, this started out as simply a clarification of my role in this game's development: there was none.

Perhaps I should have left it at that ;)

Nope ... this is fine IMO. First, it clarifies your role(s) within Origin when that company existed. I also supplies insight into the early days of EA/Origin and how EA (mis)handled things.

And it gives us insight - perhaps more than you realize - into the person behind the keyboard. I think you might find that in the main, that last thing is what is really the best part of the whole thing.

Methinks t'would be fun to hoist a tankard or three IRL ... just for grinz 'n' gigglez.

<TOPIC SHIFT>
Back to UO ... I have a 20-charge empty runebook for you to collect runes with. Can also supply you with a few hundred Recall scrolls that should last for ages to recharge that thing from all the Recall vs Sacred Journey errors! <chuckle> I still find myself hitting the blue gem even tho I need not.

We return now to our original program.... :)

Went shopping....you know the cliche's about when the going gets tough? Had me some rune that would take me into the smack dab middle of the vendor legion, lined up in parade dress. This time I fully comprehended the sheer number of vendors there are in Luna. Knowing, as Basara had alluded to, that the vendors were going un-shopped, IMO this was due largely to empty bags. You'd double click on 'em. "Look at my wares!" they'd say. Then the bag opening sound and just an empty grid. The vendors should have added, "Gotcha!"

Vendors now announced their last restocking date....6/12...6/16. I was kinda excited by the suspense of wondering if I'd find an automaton with the stuff I was looking for: empty runebooks and recall scrolls.

Then came the moment of such....shame...the shame of a sucker. Found a blank runebook! You have NO IDEA how long and in how many places I've sought one. Plus it claimed it was....yep, Exceptional. Fifteen hundred gold. Grabbed it.

Then I found a row of vendors inside a store. Gal sold runebooks - also Exceptional - for 250 gold a pop. Had to put down the laptop and take a walk after that, murmuring, "You idiot, you idiot, you....sucker!!" several times. Returned and found she also had recall scrolls cheap.

Found a lizardman slayer, Beer. I didn't buy it for two reasons: they wanted 25 grand for it and....it's a mace weapon <sigh>.

Okay....after a web search regarding runebooks and recall scrolls [yes I have Sacred Journey but more about that later], it said all I had to do was drag and drop runes into the book. They should have added, simply, because all things that do not work begin with that word. Open the book, drag the rune to it, rune won't stick. Renamed the book, tried again. Nope. For some reason I still do not understand, I'd keep opening the book and keep trying to MAKE THOSE DAMNED RUNES STICK.

Did another search....found another site. All the illustrations looked like something from a long ago version of UO where more of the art was made to look like the thing it was, in this case like a book. Info must be out of date, I thought. Procedure must have changed.

I know what you're all thinking: "Pick up the rune and drop it on the book, you moron!" Yeah, finally figured that out but, mother of god, that makes no sense. So much in this game makes sense to y'all, but you must understand that you've learned it and, thus, accept it, forgetting that IT MAKES NO SENSE. I don't put stuff in a BOOK by dropping stuff on it. Try THAT with your photo album...."Yeah, I'll just toss this stack of photos on top of this thing and...."

After that, charging - yes, I'll use that name - the book with the recall scrolls was easy.

Lately in my travels I'll find an NPC surrounded by monsters pleading for help, I kill the monsters, the NPC begs me to help him or her escape, but this usually involves teleporting the hapless character someplace you cannot walk to. Might have mentioned I saw a player doing just that to build something called compassion points. Perhaps something is broken in my brain but, when I'd try Sacred Journey, I could not drag the sad AI soul along and, somehow, this bothered me. I'm not encountering many players, you see, thus these things take on an odd sort of importance....especially the NPC gal standing on the ice island.

Okay, I got the book, I got the recall scrolls, got runes in the book, charged the book with the recall scrolls, found an NPC who needs to be taken away from all of this, I selected a destination and hit the button that is supposed to open a gateway. I'd seen this work with that other player. The NPC follows you in. The proper Latin appears above us, magic light begins to glow beneath us then....."You don't have enough reagents...." WTF!?

Oy....help me....what else do I need. No, the help guides I found wouldn't tell me. Oh, I know. I have a way to teleport, I could and should simply ignore those pleading NPCs but if I want a player to follow me when the time comes to go from vet beneficiary to benefactor, I need to be able to do this.

Otherwise it was lots of fun. Oh, sure, I nearly died from a snake bite at Serpents Hold. There was also this dark gray guy with bat wings, shouting something that sounded like, "Gabba goo, gabba gabba go!" in a deep voice with the reverb turned up nearly zapped me to death.

Oh, and yeah, there was an insane NPC at Magincia. The place looked like it had been nuked. Even the moongate was broken (got there through a runebook). Only thing left was an NPC who'd gone mad. Double clicked on him and he delivered some gibberish about my seeking the Restless Souls to bring back three threads of life. Clearly he was out of his mind. I passed but felt kinda bad for him as I left.

Ah, such fun. Such maddening, absorbing, addictive fun.

Oops....just saw the messages that following my two tomes.

Thanks, Beer. Now if I could just get the recall scrolls to work. Come to think of it, maybe they do just fine. Perhaps the gateway option is just for magic guys though....that's my hunch, though hunches have not exactly served me well ;)

Sorry, Trageon, but I've been mostly on Lake Austin lately because so many folks here are there. And, in the course of this thread, I was interested in being where they are.

Many of the vets have mutiple characters I see, and I'll work on my Chesapeake guy once I have the game sorted in my mind....to a viable degree at least on Lake Austin. Thanks for the offer of help though. Looks from your sig file that you would have REALLY enjoyed Privateer Online ;)
