[Magery] Template mentor left me :(

Ok, so while I may have opened my account Nov. 1997, been in and out over the years and show my account age is 11 years old, I have never EVER had a template that I have worked on. I just used whatever skills I wanted to, paying no attention to how it affected my ability to kill things.

Why, you may ask? Because the first year I played, I was the healer of my little gang of mages. I never got on the front line. I just kept everyone healed. I was a scribe who made and sold spellbooks. Then I got into gardening.

As you can imagine, gardening isn't much use when you're fighting an ice orc lord!

I made a new friend about 6 months ago and he wanted to show me how affective mysticism could be and how he could kill multiple dragons and greater dragons by himself. And he did while I stayed hidden and shaking in the corner. I needed no further proof that I could be the mage I wanted to be and not take constant dirt naps, that pis... well, you know.

So the template he created for me is:
120 Magery
120 Medication
120 Focus
120 Eval Int.
120 Mysticism
120 wrestling

Then he recommended that I top it off with a staff of the magi. And make sure I had a full LRC suit and as much mana regen as I could get.

So I've been working on getting those skills up, got a couple of 120 PS and working on the rest. I was presented with a generous gift of a staff of magi last weekend.

Skills are coming along steadily. I hesitate to go out much by myself but can, in the right place in ice dungeon, kill one ice orc lord at a time and fight off the occasional other creatures that come by my little piece of the dungon. I generally rely on 2 EVs to do the dirty work while I continually hit him with Eagle Stikes and Netherbolts to raise mysticism which is currently at 50.6.

My questions to other mages with a similar template:

  • is there any where else I can go to kill creatures that I can handle with my style and skills?
  • Once I get all my skills where they need to be, how do I use them? What sequence do I hit whatever I'm fighting?
  • I would swear my friend kept a healing stone in his hand but I can't seem to do that.
  • Any other advice?

You have 120 wrestling. You don't need to use the staff of the magi for defense.
Equip yourself with a slayer book, drop an RC and cast away the proper spell to kill the monsters pretty quick.

Note: I'm surprised no one noticed my typo for "meditation". *laughs*

So would I be able to kill a liche paragon if I do as you suggest above? That's my target. I died at the hands of those guys for years when they first arrived in Britannia and I want me some payback.

Sure can. Equip an undead slayer book (or conjurer's grimorie if you have one), find your target, drop a summon (RC or two EVs), invis until the summons are on top of it and pelt away with ebolts, flamestrikes and explosions.
If the liche starts to target you, invis to break it.
Always try to have a summon up to tank for you while the monster has more than half hp (they slow down after that point) and stack up on SDI for extra spell damage.
The most important thing here is knowing when to use invisibility to break aggro and to regen mana when the pool is low.
You can slay greater dragons with some ease those tactics.

I've not used the invisible spell in a decade. I have 100 hiding which I'm going to drop as my skills raise and I need the points. I'll research how it works so I don't screw up.

Thanks for the detailed instructions. You nasty paragon liches beware. I'm coming for you!

Best thing you can do it create a macro that cast invisibility on yourself.
In one month, it will become natural to just hit the macro when you see a nasty monster to prepare to fight it. :)

I'm using the EC (hey, I like it) and trying to figure out how to automatically target myself with a macro. It seems there is a self target but that just creates a target that I have to click on myself (kind of defeats the purpose of self targeting). What am I missing, EC users?

EDIT: Answered my own question. Put the self target in the macro FIRST and THEN the spell. Sheesh. Senior moments seem to be the norm anymore...

EDIT AGAIN: Ok. It worked fine with a greater heal spell. But doing the same thing with the invisible spell doesn't auto-invis me. It seems to work just like a regular invisible spell where I have to target myself. What am I doing wrong here?

Right click the spell icon and select target: self.
You need to disable legacy targeting for this to work.

When I right click the spell icon on my hotbar, the options I have are:

Lock Hotbar
New Hotbar
Assign Hotkey
Clear Item
Disable Repeating
Edit item

I have disabled legacy targeting.

Is it a macro, or did you drag the spell from the book to the hotbar?
If it is a macro, simply open your spellbook, pick the spell, drag & drop over the macro to replace it then right click over the icon.

Edit: Also, you will find it very useful to replace all the macros for your attack spells with the spells and select target: current or target: stored. That way the spell will be aimed right towards your current target or the target you picked for it.

It was a macro. I did what you suggested and it worked. I can now invis with the best of them. Thank you, Bealank!

We have much catching up to do.

You do not have to have the healing stone in your hand to use it. It only has to be in your pack. You have to have a hand FREE though. I always use spell books. This is the key for the template we talked about. Slayer books are what make you powerful. I created this template based around a very specific (and my most consuming) suit. It entails being able to have 2/6 casting even in stone form and with a hand free (for healing stone).

I mentioned using the staff of magi only till your wrestling matches your Margery. But, the more you use your hands to defend yourself the quicker your wrestling will raise. Use the staff only when you desperately need mele defense in order to stay alive.

Oh, also, this template does not become truly effective till you have your complete collection of slayer books at your finger tips.

I recommended this template to you because I found you enjoyed the mage much like I do. There are no doubt other, more powerful PVM templates. But, I find my mystic mage to be the most versatile and capable. Plus, it is always a work in progress!!! I love having to save and look forward to improving the next piece/part of this template. By far, my funnest character (for me).

*bows down to afore mentioned mentor returning*

Thank you, m'lord. Your experience has helped me far more than I can express. I do enjoy the magery more than any skill in game and have felt that with the right skills, I could be lethal. You proved that to me on our little test run to that dungeon with the greater dragons. *shudders at the memory*

I'm working on the slayer books. I have 5 now I think but we can discuss later which ones you recommend. Wrestling is coming along. It's 104 now I think. Magery is 115.

Thus far, I've only died a handful of times while you've been away, mostly due to my own lack of attention as to what's going on around me. If you see me dozing off next time we venture out, do feel free to smack me upside the head with a sturdy spellbook.

While having 2/6 casting is nice, I prefer to use protection for PvM and drop FC from my suit/jewels to save space for other mods.
Also, while you can pretty much cast level 6 spells for minutes without running out of mana with 120 med and focus, I have found that if you're human, casting wraith form through a necro scroll can be extremely helpful if you have the right slayers on your hand.
Leeching 10 to 20 mana back per casting can be a game changer at some situations.

I would dump the Med for Resist.
Having a similar template, both med and focus is nice to keep down time at a minimum. I'd like to be corrected if wrong, but I can't see value in Wrestling. Assuming you are on a mount there is no reason to ever be within hand-to-hand range where it would be of use. I'd swap that for Resist ... or Spellweaving to make your summons harder to dispel.

Put the 120 Wrestling on Stone for 120 Spellweaving and use trap boxes if you primary do pvm !
