I recently returned to uo after a few years leave, and decided to make a tamer. I've had them in the past, and they were my favorite class. I used an advanced taming token this time around....not knowing the taming system had been changed to no longer provide gains for failed attempts.. wow.. Whoever is responsible for that choice.. wow .... this has been the most grueling leveling I've ever done.. including in WOW .... does anyone else share my enthusiasm for the mindless monotony that is training taming .. any suggestions to speed things up or pass the time while doing it? ... current skill is at 89.6 taming with 120 lore

Technically it'd just be Masochism.

... save yourself the insanity and use jewelry :)

Add on some jewels and you can tame critters to turn in to the zoo or work the cu sidhe spawn. Just be creative and you can still have fun training. Also, don't tame for long periods unless you have something good to listen to. I usually tame a bit when I first logon, hunt then come back and do a bit more before I log for the day.

It might be that you've hit a bit of a wall too. I don't think any of my tamers have gotten through the 80's without a real dry spell.

I do think though, if you're running around with the powerful pets, the effort is justified. It's boring, but when you're done... Well for me it's the best skill in UO, but I'm clearly biased :D

Here's a thought

89 taming
two +13 taming jewelry items
one +5 birds of britannia talisman

equals 120 taming

remove the items when you want to train it up

I've got three tamers that have 120 real taming; one that is currently at 118.7 and another that's at 118.1; one at 115.6; one at 111.0; and another at 110.5; four that are between 104.5 and 108.3; one locked at 102.0 and one locked at 100; five between 95.0 and 100; one locked at 95.0; two between 90.0 and 95.0; two locked at 90.0; two that are between 85 and 90.0; four that are between 50.0 and 85.0; and four that are between 45.0 and 50.0. That's 34 total, I think, that get some attention on a pretty regular basis.

Sometimes I take the ones that aren't maxed out on their real taming out and get gains every other day or so (about every three days once they hit 117.0 real), and then sometimes I take a break from that routine and skip a whole month. The ones that are over 100 real taming, I usually just tame long enough to get one gain. The ones that are below 100 real taming, I try to get at least two gains in a session or tame and kill and collect leather until their backpack is full, which usually takes around an hour or so if they're taming unicorns. I've found that if I set that kind of a goal for the ones with lower skill (e.g., two gains, four gains, etc., or a set amount of leather/gold), it's easier to spend the time on taming.

Wow and I thought I was bad with having about 7 different tamers but only one that has 120 real skill. The others are all between 90 and 98.9 real taming. I think that they need to change your stratics title from Crazed Zealot to Crazed Tamer!

For me, my pets (cus, GDs, Rune beetle/mare) obeys me fine at 110 taming/110 lore.

I only jewel up to 120 taming when I am actually taming something.

I use ancient farmer's kasa and birds of brit totem to boost lore to 120 to get 1 more stable slot when I need to swap pets.
