Just tried Navery with my Disco Tamer and Gdrag ..

Took me 50 minutes and 2 deaths (pet died 5 times due to teleporting me away)

Tried it with CU Shide .. took just under 2 hours ...

My Sampire friend takes well under 15 minutes to beat her with no deaths or any real problems :-(

Taming took/takes ages to raise because you commanded amazingly powerful beasts.. now these beasts you command are mere weaklings compared to the 'uber' sampire templates..

Maybe time for a new Creature to tame that puts us on the same level as sampires? or making taming easier to gain? or leave taming as just a 'fun' template and not for serious hunting high end creatures .....

Just some Thoughts ....

We don't need more powerful pets. Maybe you should get a couple friends to help, no? It is, afterall, a MMORPG. Anyone who has done Navery knows she takes forever with a tamer. Sampires aren't overly fast either. Get a disco/mystic or disco/archer, utilize the rocks, and take her down in less than 10 minutes. Two together can do her in 6-8.

All fighting-chars should be leveled up to the life-leechers level in terms of survivability otherwise the freedom to choose whatever play style you like is just a word in the wind.

For tamers you can do that by adding new heavier beasts or by increasing their healing ability. The first would be very welcome (after all we got no good news since four years) but it opens the door a lot of problems - they have to create the models, the ai, nerf all to not screw up pvp and see if it really works.

Some work with veterinary would be great (adding a fourth taming-related skill would be the best way imho, something like a chivarly but for pets).

That said, the 50 minutes needed to kill navrey are not strange, the weirdness is in the amount of times your greater dragon died.

At full health the gd should be fully capable of survive against navrey for about two minutes, that is enough time to free youself from the webs. You have to heal the pet constantly and stay close to it because you can still apply bandages while webbed. Always keep the gd at full health, even if it is to 94% apply the bandage: if it goes to 50% its dead when you get teleported away.

Also check your gd physical resistance. The pet power calculator is not a "combat" tool because you can find yourself with a 4.5 greater dragon that has not enough physical resistance to deal with any big mob. If you solo stuff, use your greater dragon that has the best resistance set, even if it has 700 hp because it is not about how many blows it can withstand but about how many hp per second of damage it takes.

Resist is everything to me as I use them for tanks.
My lower HP high resist GDs survive longer than any high hp i have ever had.
Lean and mean baby...

Did you use the rocks? do you use the disco mastery spells? these can speed it up for you as well.

Yeah, i think i made the Op post
Ok an increasing number of posters use the "Op" or "OP" abbreviation for different things. What does your "Op" stand for and why did you use it? (Sorry for being off topic here)

Like KingHen said, Discordance can help you and Logrus, one of the developers, recently posted that we should all use Tribulation.

'op' opening post :)

Yeah, i used masteries with an arachnid slayer flute :)

althought my disco is only 108 ( and rising) i didn't use Tribulation, but the Despair spell, but now readng the other posts, i see as a tamer i should use Tribulation, not Despair (which seems more geared towards bard/mage)

Discord + Tribulation :)

Still lots to learn in this game :) and keeps it interesting

I'd agree with Aibal... teaming up is a far better option. Especially if you're recently returned to UO. It's a great support while you fight new spawns and Europa has some great guilds for returning players. You can get help with gear, advice and hunting companions for tougher spawns. Going in solo is really just making life hard for yourself.

I would expect any player who was just returning to UO to take a lot longer to kill top bosses regardless of their template. I think you should give yourself some time to learn the ropes again. I have a range of templates I can use depending on where I want to hunt, much as I have numerous tamers, I would never recommend that a player just use tamers to hunt. Taming isn't the strongest profession in some situations, other times a tamer is the best option by far, or it makes little difference. But one person's weakness is another person's challenge. If we all had it easy, we'd likely be asking for more tougher spawns :D I like having a challenge with my tamer.

I'd suggest wearing skill increase items to get your barding skills to 120 so you have the best effect on the bosses. Barding is one profession that really needs 120 skill to tackle the top end stuff.

Secondly, is your dragon trained? It's worth having a close look at its skills, stats and resists before you spend time training, just to be sure it's a decent pet. If you're aiming to solo top end spawns you'll need a top end pet :) Just as your sampire friend will have gotten herself some good equipment and skills, you need those on your pets and yourself.

Thirdly, take time to work on your technique on less dangerous foes, or with a group. You need to be handling pets and barding instinctively before you hit the big game... I mean you can hit it while you're still a bit rusty, but I wouldn't advise it lol.

Thanks for all Advice :)

Well, have a 3,1 star drag now... not great but he'll do the job :)

A few things you ~can do.

Remake the template to have some fire power:

Add in mage eval and med + Slayer book and wraith form

Add in melee tact and chiv +slayer wep +perfection

Have the pet tank + high end ols school slayer damage = more damage then any sampire can muster. The odd thing is youll be a "glass cannon" of sorts. Youll out damage most or all other templates but at the cost of being weak when a mobs "target switches" or area attacks.

I run both a vampire sword pally tamer and a mystic mage tamer w/eval and both do really well.

:) the key is really having a good GD....
go to the firepit, lure away dragon and drakes, take your low end GD to kill the wild GD and cross your fingers for a nice tame in the 3.9 - 4.0 range....that should be enough for Navery

I actually found it easier to kill the fat spider with taming and disco then with the sampire....less hassle due to getting beamed around when webbed ...took me around 10-15 minutes to kill one....the pain is the wait untill the new one respawns :)

since i got my tangle after 95 spiders I havent been there again :)
