Talk to me about Honor

I'm an old vet, and have recently (finally) acquired an all 70 resists suit, and a decent weapon, so I can actually take on some harder stuff.

The person who was helping me mentioned honoring monsters, and I've seen the term thrown around in here a lot.

I know it's a virtue, and I know how to do it (set up a one key macro for it) and I know I'm supposed to do it.. but why?

What does honoring yourself do, and what does honoring the monster do, and what is the benefits to doing so, as well as any drawbacks?

Basically, I need an in-depth primer on what these things do, from a player perspective. I've done a little online research, but most of what I've found is old (pre-release stuff about what it was was supposed to do, so I don't know how much of that is up to date.)

It's been so long since I've played. Help?

If you have 50 or more Bushido skill, honoring monsters will do extra damage, if you hit the monster consecutively (without misses) and you are not hit yourself. Damage increases for up to an additional 100%.
If you aquire a path in honor, you can honor yourself and monsters will ignore you for a while. The higher your path is (knight of honor is best) the time the monsters ignore you is the longest.
Hope this was the info you were looking for.

Any time a Samurai with 50 or more Bushido skill fights an Honored foe, and lands a hit, he gains in Perfection. Perfection gives a damage increase that raises with each step he gains. The number of steps you can gain in perfection is approximately 10, where you will receive the message "You have achieved perfection". At 100 Bushido, each step of Perfection grants a 10% damage increase to your normal attack, thus if you achieve Perfection, you are in fact receiving a 100% damage increase to your attacks (300% damage increase cap applies). Also at 100 Bushido, Perfection grants 100 Luck per level achieved. For a Samurai of 50 skill, each step is a 5% damage bonus and a 50 luck bonus to the target he honored, with a Samurai in training receiving a 1% damage increase and 10 Luck increase to each level of Perfection per 10 full skill points gained, up to 100 Bushido. A missed hit results in a loss of 3 levels of Perfection. At the defeat of your opponent, you also gain back some health, stamina, and mana based on the final level of Perfection you have achieved.

also this:
Honor is the courage to defend and uphold the truth, and derives from Truth and Courage. The mantra associated with Honor is Summ.

Virtuous Ability: Embrace Honor

The reward for following the path of Honor is the ability to move peacefully among aggressive monsters, as well as a damage bonus to melee combat.

You can activate Embrace Honor by double-clicking the Honor icon on the Virtue gump, and then targeting yourself. Activating this ability will cause all monsters to ignore you for a limited amount of time. The duration you embrace your Honor increases as you achieve higher levels on the path of Honor.

If you are in combat when you embrace your Honor, any opponents already aggressive towards you will not be affected.

Gaining Honor:

You can gain Honor by engaging in honorable combat with monsters or NPCs. You can do this by double-clicking the Honor icon on the Virtue gump and targeting an appropriate opponent. You will face your opponent, bow to them, and speak the words, “I honor you.”

You then must defeat your opponent in an honorable fashion.

Honorable combat is defined as:

* Allowing your opponent to damage you first.
* Engaging in one-on-one combat.
* Not using ranged weapons, unless you stay in the same spot where you honored your opponent, or you only damage your opponent while adjacent to them.
* Not allowing your pets or summoned creatures to help you during the battle.
* Avoiding the use of poison.

To engage an opponent in honorable combat, your opponent:

* Must be one that you can perform negative actions upon.
* Must be at full health.
* Must not already be honored by a nearby player.
* Must be close to you, in your line-of-sight, and have a clear path to you.

The amount of Honor you gain from defeating your opponent is determined by how closely you followed the above guidelines for honorable combat, as well as your opponent’s level of fame.

Virtuous Titles: Each virtue has three steps on the path to enlightenment, each more difficult to attain than the last. Upon reaching each step, you will be given a new Virtue title, which is displayed when you mouse over the Virtue’s associated symbol (in this case, the Chalice of Honor) in the Virtue Gump.

For soloing most named/highend monsters...honor is the difference between life and death.

There are a couple things in this thread I question....I believe I read someplace achieving perfection grants the equivilent of 1600 honor...vice 1000 for the 10 steps.

Also if you achieve perfection and kill your oponent all of your skill pools are refilled....health, mana, stamina...

I was thinking of dropping focus for bushido anyway, and this just clinches it. Thanks so much for all this help. You guys answered my question perfectly!

hehe, seems to be some confusion about this.

When you honor an opponent, you are basically SUPPOSED to get hit first. Nevermind if the monster actually makes contact first or not. Storm did mention this however.

As far as perfection, it doesn't matter. You can get hit ALL day...when you miss, THAT is what matters.

A miss will set you BACK 3 steps on perfection.

Luck is NEVER any higher than 1000...EVER. You can be a Kengo Samurai 侍, and yes you can gain around 110 luck per step and about a 11% Damage bonus.
HOWEVER, the damage bonus is ALWAYS no more than 100, and luck caps at 1000.

If you don't believe me, you can read over the Samurai 侍 FAQ. I'm sure he said the same thing.

Other than that, Timberwolf said the most important thing. I will just tweak it a bit. The amount of mana, life and stamina gained back will reflect how many steps were achieved against the monster.

Now, what do these steps of perfection do? Well that depends on your relative Bushido skill honestly. Achieving Perfection nets you a bonus of 100% to damage and a luck bonus for the creature you honored equivalent to 1,000 luck.

Straight from the faq...I stand corrected honorable Kengo!
