I have been playing siege and as such I am waiting to get my gold trasnferred back over to GL so I can get a house and use my soulstones to get this guy how I want him... being a fairly confident chap I thought I would try and improve on the pets I had... turns out that when I rated my mare and beetle they only came in at 2.5 stars each.... yuck! As I had no real bond with them I decided to release them in the wild and let them suck there instead.....

I set them free and decided to head to the Ki-Rin passage... I made it there fine, I dodged all the elementals and proceded to destroy the acid elemental that had decided to get all hugged up with the Nightmare...

right, I am ready I think to myself.... I had a taming macro set up as follows... Use skill: Taming - Wait for target - last target.

I cast invis.... I use my pair of scissors to target the mare. Pop out of hiding and hit my macro! "you seem to anger the beast!" damn! invis!

Macro *press*

"you seem to anger the beast!" damn! invis!

Macro *press*

"you seem to anger the beast!" - An Lor Xen *the spell fizzles*

Nightmare: Explosion, Flamestrike, Poison, Energy Bolt - In Vas LAG - Melee, Melee, Melee.

ME: OOoOOOOOOOOooooOoo

What! this cant be happening! I am 120 modified taming/lore! I ran back to the moongate, got a rez at the shrine, equip my gear and go back for round two.

By this time the lag on GL had reached epic levels so I kind of knew I was doomed to fail but after several attempts with the same outcome I had to give it up as a bad job..

I am hoping that once I get my spellweaving stoned over I will not have any issues at all as I will use the monster ignore spell and just tame the heck out of it!

In terms or getting ready I would just like to add a few tips for new or returning tamers on what to perhaps carry with you.

I would have some form of mage wep.. for a so called "weaker pet" an untamed nightmare can hit like a tank! also... eat orange petals... I would have survived if not for poison :sad3: carry healing, cure and stamina potions! those spell combo's and melee attacks can leave you unable to run!

I am going to spend as much time as I can training my macro timing and my spells timing and will use the "lead taming guide" in the FAQ... if you havent read it yet... its a good place to start ;)

In all honesty I dont think I would have had any trouble if I had just waited until my character was set up for the task... let this be a lesson to me and anyone else who doesn't have experience in taming!

We want these pets for a reason.... they pack a punch and can deal a good deal of damage in a short time...

The most important lesson I am taking away from this.... respect the creatures of Socaria and as for the Nightmare.... I had seriously underated this pet! I will be spending time getting as high a rated one as possible and I will love her!

Nightmare - 4
Demuti - 0

For nightmares, I'll generally cast one EV, let it beat the mare down to a sliver of health, and then I'll dispel it and start lead taming. The advantage with this method is 1.) the mare burns all of her mana on the EV, and 2.) with just a sliver of health, her stamina is down so much that she moves much more slowly and it is thus easier to stay out of reach of her. I have no issues taming them with this method, and only rarely have to heal myself.

Yep, the success of standard lead taming really depends on you beating the pets down if they're going to roast you otherwise ;) You *can* tame them on full health, but full health and full mana can really make it hard for you to concentrate on keeping the right distance and speed to keep trying to start a tame!

There is another method I tried successfully with bake kitsune... taming a gaman and telling it to stop/stay then invis and let the mare target it. Then all you need to do is vet the gaman while you tame and you won't be eaten as readily. The handy thing with mares is they're only 2 slots, which leaves you the option of doing this even with a 3 slot pet like an old dragon. Just ensure it's told to stop and stay and it won't fight back against the mare. I still do the EV thing with mares mostly, but it's an alternative option to throw out there.

yea i do the same as wenchy ;) especially at bakes....(even when i used to have peace - i like fast things....and peacing all around and then taming...takes an era)
Well, tbh for mares and runes mainly i just leave them at full hp or almost so..they keep following me and attacking me....but tbh 4/6 chiva and enough high taming...makes the job more than good; i go there, and i use my taming "buttons" - 1 for last target and 1for taming skill....after that...i just focus on my life being carefull to timing well my heal times... ;°) Time to time i even do that with GDs...i get bored right when they start to tp here & there...so i just let them recover a bit of hp..so that they start to follow me again....(that's a good way for testing out your defensive setup xd)
But that's just becouse i'm in hurry.Otherwise do what wenchy suggested - the safer way dude is the best one ;)

I usually take my nightmare to tame bakes/nightmares. I lore the wild ones and kill off the less than optimal beasts with the mare (healing my guy of course). Then I lead-tame the ones I want to take a closer look at by peacing them first. Peace, walk up, spam the taming macro until I get a successful attempt, then hover over my peace key and my follow key, hoping to hit the latter before the beast comes after me :)

I used to subjugate the ones I wanted to tame by sic'ing the nightmare on them for a bit first, and that's what I do when I'm not taming on my peacer. But these days I tend to do all of my active taming on my peacer, and transfer pets to my other fighter tamers as needed.

I got home from work last night and my brother had been on my account... Grrrr! normally this annoys me no end! (I really need to stop using the same passwords) but he had a look in my stable and took out a pet named a forge! I hadn't looked at it as I remembered taming a firebeetle once for my crafter but never transferring it! turns out it was a fire steed! not a good one though.... in fact it was aweful but it served me well last night. Having read the replies I got here I decided to take him along to get my mare! I set him on the night mare... with a little vet he had it at about 5% health in around 35 seconds. I hopped on, cast invis and started taming! I did the lead tame and because it was moving so slow it was easy to do. I eventually tamed it and then just used the "dud" nightmares to weaken the frsh ones... I was only there around 45 mins as it was late and I didnt get one worth keeping but at least I know now that when I go on tonight I know what I am doing!

Thanks so much to everyone who chipped in and helped me, through a combination of advice I have refined my technique and I am now confident that I wont have any issues farming mares! lets hope I am as lucky with Bakes and Runebeetles.

Seems silly really but I cant believe I have played all these years and overlooked mares and stuff.... I guess I fell into the routine of just taking a dragon or super dragon everwhere I went!

I have a new rule! Take the right pet for the job! I am going to make it my mission to try get good selection of the lesser used pets.

I am doing the SW quest tonight so I can stone it over and then I am going to start working archery and tactics! (decided not to use soulstones as I want to keep my disco archer in working order!)

Yeah, you can have all sorts of fun times taming and hunting with all the pets that are out there. So glad to hear you're having fun and getting back into taming again, there is so much more to taming than just the "top" few pets :)

>>> I have a new rule! Take the right pet for the job!

That's exactly why I made the Best Battle Pet tool - because it took me too long when guildies called a pickup hunt for me to search the hunters guide to figure out which pet to take! :)

Taking the right pet for the job is even more useful when somebody else brings the tank/meat shield pet. Then you can get some of those lower HP pets out of the stables for some fun!
