Swords are traditionally considered the most versatile. Though, imbuing has leveled the playing field somewhat. Still, swords has some good specials for both PvM and PvP and allows you to use both quick swords and hard-hitting axes.

Mace fighting has excellent PvM and PvP applications, not only because of the specials but also because of the damage output. However, maces are slow, so you'll need to invest some money in a good dex/stam increasing suit.

Fencing is the fastest weapon of the three weapon skills. I view it as more useful in PvP encounters: AI/infectious strike with a kryss or bleed/disarm with a war fork. That said, one of my guild mates uses fencing for PvM with great alacrity.

Syrus gave a pretty good indication.

If you have the money, dex or stamina go for swords. More weapons & its a little more expensive.

Mace if you dont have the money. Doese minor armor damage, & at one time drained stamina to.

Fence is good for low dex warriors or Tank Mages.

Just to add a bit to what Zalan and Syrus already said.

If you depend on potions for PvM, it's hard to beat the one-handed diamond mace. If you don't, then the rune blade does a bit more damage, but is two-handed. Both of these are 3 second weapons and need 25/30 SSI and 150+ stamina for max swing.

If you are going to add Lumberjack skill into your template for resource gathering or the extra damage, then of course it needs to be swords.

Fencing is great for 1v1 or fighting a few monsters at a time. Leafblade is amazing. However, it's trash for mobs since it only has Kama with whirlwind.

Swords is the simplest. With enough stamina Double axes cut through just about everything. With less stamina, radiant scimitars are still great.

Blackstaff is the best whirlwind weapon that doesn't require huge amounts of stamina. Maces generally lack AI/Double Strike though.
