I need some help with swamp dragon barding. I was told by another player in game that different ores give different resists to the barding. (Verite = poison, shadow iron = physical, etc. He couldn’t remember them all.) I started trying to find out more info and everytime I see someone on a forum talking about it they say that’s not true, there is no difference. Then when I do a search on uo.com I find this from June, 2002:

“Question 2: Apart from the colors is there any difference between armor and weapons made from the different types of metal?
Answer: Using colored ingots to craft normal ringmail, chainmail, and platemail currently has no effect on the properties of the armor. However, this does not necessarily hold true for serpent scale armor and swamp dragon barding, which have special properties that players are still in the process of discovering.

Note: As of the next major publish, the one we call internally “Publish 16,” the answer to this question will change slightly. Armor made from different colored ore will grant different AR values—the more rare the ore, the higher the AR bonus. So, for example, while iron armor will have a basic AR rating, the same type of armor made from Valorite will have a significantly higher AR rating. More details on this will be available as we progress toward Publish 16 going live.”

So does anyone have any accurate swamp dragon barding info?

I posted this on the Smith forum but figured someone else might be able to help

sorry, but publish 16 pre-dates Age of Shadows, when everything familiar to players was thrown out in favour of the new 'uber combat system' the devs of that time had developed.

AFAIK the only thing dragon barding needs to be is exceptional, colour is irrelevant.

Dragon barding armor is 20% damage reduction for PVM on exp made deeds. The color is just for looks. It has no effect in PvP. Normal(non exp) deeds provide 10% damage reduction. The reduction seems to be applied last. That means your attackers damage is calculated then your resists then your barding armour. So in PvM is it a very significant amount of resistance. This works on all melle and spells. Direct damage does not apply. Pain spike and a few others that do direct damage AI? not sure on the direct damage list but it negates armour of all types including barding armor. Hope this helps.

My understanding is that color doesn't matter. The only thing that matters is the quality of the workmanship.

I use a combo of skill, talisman, and smith hammer to always make exceptional barding.

If you do make non exceptional it can be smelted. Anyone can use arms lore to determine the condition of the barding (no skill needed). Badly worn barding can be removed with a sharp impliment so that a fresh one can be applied. The barding is lost when removed. Barding is not removed when the pet dies.
