after using up all my charges (35) on my prospector hammer I am here to ask if there is an easier way to summon on of those buggers to train my pet dragon? Oh yes I used up 7 gar pickaxes on the way to

the gargoyle pick itself will raise dull copper up to shadow for summoning. I've been doing it for the last couple of days for training. the first two times I did it I got one within 4 swings, last night I needed to drain spot 4 times before I spawned one. I think it's pretty random. You shouldn't need to use a prospector tool at all.

However, you HAVE to use the prospector tool before the gargoyle pick to turn an iron vein to shadow iron.

Step one: Find a place to mine for the ele with a miner of at least 65 skill. The tools (prospector tool & gargoyle pickaxe) only work for characters that can mine colored ore.

Step two: Dig once with a normal shovel.

Step three: multiple choice part of test begins...

A. if Dull copper comes up, skip step four and go directly to step five.
B. If Iron comes up, proceed to step four.
C. if any other ore type comes up, Stop, and move to a different ore vein, and go back to step two.

Step four: (you should only be here if you got Iron on that first dig) Use Prospector's Tool on the vein.
A. If it replies that dull copper can be mined there, proceed to step five.
B. Any other reply, move to a new vein, and return to step 2.

Step five: Begin mining with gargoyle pickaxe. If you don't get an ele by the time the vein runs out, move to a new spot, and go back to step two.

Step Six: have someone invis the miner, then let the pet have at it with the people needing to train pets. Note that if the characters on the same account, the miner will probably have been hit once by the ele, and may have to let the combat timer run out, to switch. So, it is best to use a different account's miner (yours or a friend) to dig an elemental for your own tamer to train pets on, unless the tamer has the mining skill personally.

Step seven: once the ele is on the pets, any numbers of pets can train on it, and the vets can walk up and heal, so long as the pets don't invis. If the pets cast invisibility, the vets may have to run until they can reestablish the ele's lock on a pet.

Step eight: When done, call in a warrior type to kill the elemental. Don't forget to loot the 25 ore off the corpse.

Note: Even Grandmaster miners have been known to go over 400 swings (over 3 entire picks, and part of 1 or 2 others) between elementals, on rare occasions. On the other hands, sometimes you can get 3 elementals in 3-4 swings of the pickaxe, and get 5-10 elementals off one pickaxe. The random number generator for UO is fickle, and very, VERY, prone to streaks.

The best way to get one is to NOT want one, I've gone out looking for them and mined forever before getting one. While just mining casually in one spot I got 4 of em on 6 swings, of course I didn't "need" one for pet training.

You know, going without the prospector tool will severely limit your chance of getting an ele.

Half the ore spots are iron, and you'll need a prospector tool to elevate them to dull copper, otherwise all you'll get from them is Iron.

Good luck in finding the dull copper spots, then...

I've been unable to mine even 1/3 of the Dull Copper I need, even WITH using prospector tools, since the BOD changes increased my colored ore needs (I could keep up, prior to then, despite the ore random changes - now about half my armor BODs are Dull copper).

You just have to put down the gargoyle pick after you use the prospector's tool and MAKE yourself dig with a shovel. Oh, don't get me wrong, my miner gets twitchy when not allowed to dig up shadow eles time after time. "No, you must just dig for dull copper." (And there is much mental grumbling.)

But then again I actually fill exceptional dull copper 20 count large bods. Go figure as to my sanity.

That's pretty much what I've been doing - forgoing shadow from double enhancement (after all, already got TWO paragon shadow chests - one of them Luna White).

I just turned in 38 small DC Ex 20s & Shadow EX 10/15s Thursday - got 34 POF. I celebrated by using 2 of the vials to take all my miner's gear to 255 durability.

I didnt see where anyone offered this option. Go to Yomotsu Mines. A few of them spawn all the time and a group of people usually have one brought up to the entrance and that is where they train their pets. Easy to do if you have peace and there isn't one already up there. You just have to watch out for the rest of the spawn. Good Luck.
