Since the treasure map upgrade, prime earner has been my treasurehunter. I pretty much the procedure down. I gather up a bunch of Expert and Adeptly maps, recall into the general area, and dig it up. I then cast EVs to mop up the baddies.

My Thunter has 85 magery. Enough to cast EV but more often than not he fails. I have some buff items that raise it to 95 but I still fail (with scrolls yet) every once in a while. My first question is, what Magery do you need for the EVs to appear every time? I always assumed if you have 10 over the required Magery skill, you'd succeed pretty much every time, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

At any rate, the EVs are great. With Expertly, one will wipe out the spawn without a problem. At Adeptly, two will usually settle them up, but not if they got the big uglies.

The big uglies. Ogre Lords. They are a pancake to kill, and whats more, they dish out insane damage. I had a Ogre Slayer fire dagger made up with Imbuing, but I still can't take one down without running and gulping healing potions every few seconds. Even with all 70s resist, they hit and I'm down to 2/3 a bar. And they hit often. Usually the only fast way I can take them down is to equip my dagger and have two EVs pound em from the back.

Does anyone have any good strategies dealing with Ogre Lords? Again I can take them down but with difficulty, and that's with a slayer weapon with their highest weakness. It just seems crazy that the next hardest monster in the spawn group (dread spider) I can take down in like 5 seconds without getting hit, yet if more than one OL appears, I know I'm in for a tough time.

My old tactic with ogre lords was with barding, I would provoke them against other spawns that came up. Usually the ogre lord is my best friend when it comes to t-map spawns. I would usually end with with one ogre lord after the spawn is all gone with low health and I would just take it from there.

If But that's only if you want barding.

You can fail on 8th circle spells all the way up to 119.9. Only at 120.0 will you be free of failure, and there's even been a few (unverifiable) rumors over the years of people occasionally failing at 120, too.

I'm inclined to think earth eles make more impression than EV's, though they need healing.

if you're using a slayer melee weapon on them, you really need healing and anat for bandages so you can heal while fighting, that and if you also have parry with a shield, or parry + bush they're not a big deal to fight, they only have 100 wrestle max so they rarely hit you.

you're on a mage though, grab yourself a slayer spellbook, get your magery up to a more respectable level (85 is too low since you say you're using 8th circle spells, take it to at least 115, 120 if possible) and use direct damage a bit more, ev's are great for cleaning up but ogre lords w/ a slayer book only take a few hits to kill, and they're super weak to fire and cold.

As for failing EV's at 120, that used to happen if you got mana drained just below the required mana right before the spell finished casting, it's basicly how the game cancels a cast if for some reason you suddenly can't do it.

My experience with ogre lords - Forget fast weapons with tiny damage output. DI of 300% times pathetic is still pathetic. You can do more damage with a slow non-slayer than with a max-speed dagger.

Go for something, big, ugly and slow.

Get an ogre slayer weapon that has armor ignore and high DI & base damage, and make sure you have the weapon skill and tactics to use the AI. If you don't have the ability to use the special move, just keep popping the OL, while backing off to heal between swings as necessary.

Hit the OL, then step away a few steps, and reset the AI - hit it every 3 seconds so that the special move always goes off at base, not doubled (though a mana phasing orb might be a good idea for more quicker hits, if you've got orbs to spare).

I peace the OL if only one and dual ev's and just cus I got sick of failing I got a +15 magery scroll and fail often enough that I am thinking of getting a +20.

What I am looking forward to is the day our spawned monsters are upgraded to the new ones as the Lizard Men in Wrong are considerably harder to kill than the current Ogre Lords.

If your t-hunter is not a mage inside you may consider training mysticism. 100 is more than enough (so 70+jewels) for up to level 6 maps. Because of Rising Colossus.

If you have eval int, use a ogre slayer book and burn them with fireballs: it's faster than EVs.

My tamer has 120 magery and still fails with level 8 spells. I suspect they changed it to the 99% rule (which according to UO odds translation algorithm means "more often than not")

I agree Mysticism might be the way to go... though it sure sucks with getting about in the world... since it lacks a recall spell.

I personally use peacemaking..... the Ogre is all Zzzz.... and I just EV and Mindblast it to death. I do use an ogre slaying spellbook..

I don't have any Eval at all so Mindblast is the best I can do on my own.

I have two ways I would say try it. If a Human/Elf (gargoyle throwing) Try a -20 Magery - Spell Chan Bow - Ogre Slaying - w/ max SSI , and have a couple items to boost magery back up. Other is being a mage try a Ogre Slayer Spell book, and cast directly on them causing harm while kiting them. If needed tie the Lords up with a EV, while they are fighting Energy Cross Filed them to keep them in place. Blast or loose arrows/throwing while pinned in place. If not guilded then you can activate the fields to cause damage as well by walking over them.

This^^^

Earth Ellies are heal-able but EVs are not. I usually use a couple Earth Ellies when I hunt with my Bard.

In addition, if there is a bard available that can Discord and/or Peace the OL...not a problem. They go down far easier discorded in my experiences.

?? you can heal EV's, i do it all the time. if something's nearly dead it uses less mana than popping a new one up.
