Some questsions from a returning player

Hello everyone!

I'm testing out the waters to see if I want to return to UO and had some questions around things that have changed.

1. Everybody's gear seems to be imbued (or brittle), which apparently means it will eventually break as you can't use powder of fortification on an item that has been imbued. Is it still worthwhile / possible to craft a decent suit out of gear (like barbed runic leather armor, or enhanced armor from drops) that doesn't need to be imbued (aka won't break)?

2. I'm more of a solo player and really enjoyed earning money / top tier gear by fighting ogre lords, dragons in destard, the bone daemon in doom, or the sphynx. Are these still viable ways to make gold and get solid gear?

3. The economy seems to have gone a bit crazy inflation wise. Are there any plans for some gold sinks to rein things in?

Welcome to Stratics! :)

1. Yes, you can still make good gear that way, however the best stuff these days is always made by finding a high-end piece of armor from a monster that meets the exact criteria you need, and then reforging it to be even more powerful.

2. Yes, it's still possible, however it is much more efficient to hunt in dungeon Shame instead if you are looking for top tier gear, since that is where the best stuff is usually from. (Edit: It seems Shame is no longer the best place)

3. Not really, and gold sinks don't help much when they do occasionally happen. Gold inflation always outpaces the gold sinks very quickly.

Shame stopped giving decent loot after they rolled the loot to global. Stuff there now is cry worthy.
If you want legendaries, Exodus, the fel Turtle spawn and the Roof are your best bets.

As for brittle/imbued, a 255 piece will still last you many good years. Just go with them. Finding clean legendaries is almost impossible and when you do, the brittle pieces will still have better, higher mods.

Thanks for the responses!

Couple of further questions:

1. What do you mean by 'clean legendaries'
2. What do you mean by 'rolled the loot to global'
3. Is the old world content mostly ignored now?

1. Clean means that they don't have any significant problems with them which would devalue them. Non-antique, non-cursed, non-125 strength requirement, non-brittle etc. It's very hard to find truly clean legendary items with good stats, so they are worth quite a bit more than others.

2. A while ago, the developers changed the loot tables so that all monsters drop the same type of items, instead of the way it used to be where a low level creature always had total junk, and high level creatures always had better items. Now most creatures have the same potential to give you decent items instead of just total junk with no properties. However, there are still places where better loot is more common like the places Bealank mentioned.

3. For the most part, yes the majority of old content in the game gets ignored these days. People primarily fight bosses, do champion spawns, and farm for loot at places like the Shadowguard roof. Very few people do things like old school dungeon crawling anymore.

1. A clean legendary is a legendary artefact without a negative mod, or with at most the prized mod. They are nice, but usually brittle ones will have higher intensity or more mods.
2. The new loot style was introduced in Shame and later made so that all monsters would drop neo-shame like loot. Before the loot became global, unbound EVs in Shame were the best source of quality stuff. Now their loot makes you cry so bad it is.
