Some questions from a new player

Hi Everyone,
I just started playing two days ago. I have never played any of the earlier iterations of UO either, but I am really enjoying the freedom of the game so far.

that being said, I've been going through the help guide and looking around forums and stuff trying my best to figure things out for myself, and I think I have most the basics down.

I am wondering what some of the abbreviations you all use mean though. I've decided I want to go the necromage route and like the looks of the 6x 120 template. While looking around I keep seeing dci, lrc, lmc and so on. Would one of you be so kind as to tell me what these abbreviations mean, and any others that would be useful for me to know?

Also, as I understand it, its only possible to get necro spells by defeating magic using monsters right?

And finally, if I am not physically attacking anything, how do I raise my strength and consequently my HP?

Welcome to UO.

DCI = Defense Chance Increase
LRC = Lower Reagent Cost
LMC = Lower Mana Cost
MR = Mana Regeneration

Necro scrolls can be made by a scribe too. I'm sure if you post your shard one of the forum regulars probably plays there and would more than happy to just give you a full book.

Work the Arms Lore skill to gain STR. It works best if you see-saw it by having your skill cap reached and just using 10 points to raise arms lore, then raise a different skill and lower it. Going back and forth until you reach the desired level.

Hey, Thanks for the reply. I had not even come across the Arms Lore skill yet, I'll check it out next time I log in.

I play on the Atlantic Shard if anyone can help me out with necro spells. Haha, probably beats killing a bunch of imps.

Now if you want a skill to rasie the secondary stat I.E. magery will raise INT first and STR second just lock your INT and magery will raise STR.

Welcome to UO! There are quite a few abbreviations and properties on weapons, armor, spellbooks, etc. Here's a link to the Item Properties that you'll be seeing. This is from the Stratics website, and it's a good bookmark to have. Take care, and good hunting out there!

The necromany also offers a full necromany spellbook if you complete his apprenticeship quest. Basically you need to raise necromany to 50. But he won't offer you the quest if you already have 50 or more necromancy.

In this case, just create a new character with 49 necro, complete the quest to get the book, then pass it to your other character.

You might want to check out the stickied UO Tips in UHall, specifically powergaming a newbie section

To pass items between your chracters,

1) get a house
2) ask a friend to hold it for you temporarily while you switch characters
3) find a secluded inn and put the stuff in a bag and quickly logout/relogin with your main character and grab the bag

Listed in order of safest way to least safe way.

Welcome to UO! I'm just getting back into the game myself after a year-long break.

As you noted, this game offers a lot of freedom. It is by far the best virtual sandbox in the world.

It's also eleven years old, so there is a lot to learn.

It sounds like you have your template picked out, and that's a good thing. My advice is to have fun along the way getting to 6x120. This game has a lot of charm, so don't race through it the first time.

Also, try crafting! When I first got into the game I thought I would never mine/smith/tailor, but now those can be soothing alternatives to fighting. Mining and smithing can be a great way to get money early in the game.
