Good morning crafters,

I hate to ask this but I am nearing legendary smith and tailor and I have never really done BODs at all. Ive read the smithing FAQs at the top of this page and the BOD section with the points for rewards, etc, seems like a good reference once i get into the swing of things, but im a little lost about how to begin.

I am looking for more of a "tutorial", per se.

I see reference to have hundreds of BODs... as a beginner to the system, what do you do?

So say I go to the blacksmith and pick up my BOD. Say I get a LBOD right off the bat. There is basically nothing I can do at this point, because I have to wait 6 hours to get another smithing BOD and even then, statistically there are tons of possibilities and I might not get stuff to fill my BOD for a long time.

Am I missing something?

Say you're a beginner blacksmith, what do YOU do?

Thanks for any thoughts or information you can share.

What I see some people doing, is have every char have .1 in blacksmithing and tailoring no matter what type of char. That will allow them to collect a basic iron and cloth BOD every hour. If they don't do tailoring BODs then they trade them with other people for smith BODS and visa versa. I've seen people make deals with people on other shards where if they collect these "junk" BODs on their shard the other person will do the same on the shard you play. It doesn't take very long to get a large pile of BODs, and that is where you have people with houses just for sorting, storing, and working BODS.

I normally only have 100 smith bods to be filled, otherwise you can get burned out pretty easily. Then again I also normally only do them a couple times a week, depending on what else is going on in game. I also have a chart printed off that shows what the rewards are for each BOD, and if it is a LBOD that gives a low reward then I toss it (there are also some SBODs that the amount and type of ingots vs reward received makes it not worth doing and some people toss those), otherwise it goes in a BOD book as well as filled SBODS that are waiting for a LBOD. Then once a week I go through the books and see if I have SBODs that can be combined with a LBOD. It's a pretty simple set-up, but then again I'm not doing thousands of BODs a week. I do BODs as something to do while waiting for other things to happen.

Kellgory's got the jist of it.

Below 70 skill, you can't get larges or exceptional BODs.
50 to 70, it's 1 BOD every 2 hours
below 50 skill, it's 1 BOD an hour

using 0.1 skill for each of the BOD skills is great to have on characters still training other skills, or having the room to not miss 0.2 skill points.

Also, if you find yourself in a period where you don't have the time to actually fill the BODs, let them pile up.

I've found that about 50-100 junk BODs is a "critical mass" (lower end for smith, higher end for tailor), with a 70+ skill crafter. IF you fill Junk BODs only 2-3 times a week, these will return enough junk BODs for the next trip (when combined with 3-6 characters doing BOD runs once a day) to keep you in that range of BODs to fill for the next trip.

Example: Smith starts with 100 BODs, and has 0.1 smith on 3 other characters for BOD runs.

He fills and turns in the 100 BODs, getting his first BODs of the day before turning in the 100, and ends up with 104 new BODs (100 + 3 bod runners + smith's actual time-based BOD), and it will be time to get 3 more BODs with the runners 10-30 minutes after turning in the 100. That puts him at 107 new BODs.

Of the 107, 101 were ones gotten by the high-level smith, and are the ones that can potentially be good; however, it's likely that only about 10-15 of those will be for large BODs worth keeping or smalls for POF, Bronze Hammers, etc. Another 5-10 will be larges not worth keeping.

That will leave you with (107 - (13 to 25)) roughly 80 to 92 more junk BODs to fill. You fill them over the next 6 hours, getting (and filling) 18 more junk BODs, and your next 6-hour BOD. That puts you at 98-111 more BODs to turn in for the next cycle.

IF you can exercise enough self control to get up to that number of BODs once before turning them in (say, use 4 hourly runners, 5 hours a day, for 5 days), the number of BODs will self-sustain themselves past that point, maybe even climb higher than you can handle (using 6 smiths, all 70-120, I got to the point where I started giving colored junk BODs away, and dropping about 3/4 my iron junk - the ones my under-100 Smiths can't gain skill when filling).

Nice, thanks.

Ok I have 7 character slots so I did as you suggested and put .1 bsmith and tailoring on each of my existing characters. Also made some placeholder characters in my open slots until I make something else that had the required skills.

So now I have 1 skilled smith / tailor and 6 noobs. I marked runes to the middle of vesper which has a blacksmith and a tailor right next to each other and another for my home, I think im set to farm some BODs! =)

Going to stockpile them until I finish off 120 smith and tailor on my crafter.

Thanks again for the additional insight.

By the way, do take the time to look through the BODs your skilled crafter pulls, and compare them to the charts I've done for max skill one can gain off any given common item: Smith and Tailor.

If you have the chance to gain skill off filling the BOD now, go ahead and fill it, then stow it away for future turn-ins. Not only will it potentially give you an extra gain or two, it will reduce the amount of time you need to fill all those BODs once you do hit 120.

And, if you're ever going to "power-train" smith, be sure you have a salvage bag, have 100 mining, and at least a pair of +3 gloves of mining. I've recently expanded my example of training smith skill to cover the costs from 110 to 120 (and as my other two crafters near 105 & 100 respectively, will eventually do one of them to cover 105-110 and the other 100-105). Judicious use of smelting with Royal Circlets (only 1 ingot lost per smelt, with the salvage bag and mining at 101.1 or higher) can get you from 110 to 120 for less than 10,000 ingots consumed.
