Soloing Pirates

So, assuming this isn't some kind of secret....I know there's some people out there who solo pirates.

How do you do it? Light cannons? Heavy cannons? Grapeshot? Cannonballs?

Do you try to maneuver yourself so that the pirate ship can't hit you, or is that not even possible?

I've done some experiments and so far they have all failed.

I run a tokuno ship so I can work the front cannon and steer. try to manuever behind the pirates. Any crew that comes up I hit them with "Armour Ignore".
If I cant seem to get behind the ship I use "Hit and Run" until it is immobilized.
By this time most of the crew is dead. Finish off the remaining crew then work the pirate down. I usually don't get alot of loot off the bodies of the crew but I get the pirate.

Oh heavy cannons is what I shoot it with

Also I have a character hidden on board on a second account in case I die.

Again ranged armour ignore is your friend.

Heavy cannons/cannonballs

Don't even worry about mob at first just get the ship scuttled. Position yourself where you can control 4 cannons using the cannon gumps. Preload come along side fire the two cannons on that side, then come about and fire the other two cannons. Then go a ways off so that they can't hit you and reload all four cannons, rinse and repeat till the ship is scuttled. Board the ship and kill the remaining orcs, (some will be killed in the battle but they are much easier to kill once the ship is scuttled and your on board their ship). Then just go after the pirate. Tamer or archer.

Also when you have scuttled the ship position your ship a few tiles off the bow or stern at a 45 degree angle or so, their ship will continue to fire cannons after the ship is scuttled if you stay in that position they will not damage your ship.

i typically maneuver my boat so that i don't take any damage (the back of ships do not have cannons) by sitting on my front cannon and chasing the boats down.

i use a tamer and have to cast invisibility a few times to get the crew to focus their attacks on my dragon while i take down the ship. my dragon typically kills all the orcs on the ship by the time i get it scuttled and then i just board the ship while the dragon finishs off the pirate.

i use heavy cannons, and don't use grapeshots. it takes about 14 shots to scuttle the ship. once you board the ship, poison fields seem to help since the pirates use bandages to heal.

I accidentally took down a merchant ship solo-ish, does that count? ;)

I happened to run it into an island where it could not maneuver back away. I logged in my bard and hopped on the island and provo'd the npcs. I realize it is not as hard as pirate ships but I felt quite evil and gigglish over it.

Similar to what I do except I used a tokuno, now an orc ship, used hit and run w/ spells to kill the crew first (ride the boat like a mount and precast then come back, hehe), then I tank w/ heavy cannons and reload a side until I blow up the other ship, and I use a second character, which I invis, so I get double the rewards at the end and have some extra EVs to get the pirate down before I snatch him. I've never died ... I don't think it's that hard, unless you lose connection maybe. But yeah, that's how I usually do it. I've also never been scuttled while doing it solo, but that's because I played in group for awhile first, knew everything I'd need to do -- which isn't much, but better w/ practice, like anything else. If you have an orc slayer the whole process is pretty fast, just takes a half hour to sail back unless you go on killing spree, lol.

also when aproaching them use voice commands and do not turn the ship no where near them or they will take off or turn them selves. come from behind open fire. provoke is the best but animals that cast can do the trick. and when you cant board it cause it says its moving just use ur rune to ur ship and boom u can board.

I think this is the most fascinating thread I've read this week. I don't think my skills are up to soloing a pirate, but I might have a try at a merchant, or an orc ship with no red-name aboard.

Thank you.

The gargoyle merchants are a little tougher. They hide bards on deck. And if you don't fire your cannons at a merchant ship they won't fire at you. Kill the crew first.
