So how is Stygian Abyss Client different from Kingdom Reborn?

I ran around for a couple more minutes.

- They haven't fix sound distances yet. A monster growling at the edge of your screen still sounds like it is on top of you.
- Movement is smoother but still has jerks and lags
- Summons appear in the pet menu which is a huge plus in my opinion
- However the horse I am riding also appears there
- The new map looks and works great, however I can't find any option to enlarge the radar to large size
- They've fixed the legacy container issues. Items drop where they are supposed to
- I don't see the fancy UO font anywhere. I think that was custom made for the original client. I hope that add it in.

I am stasfied with the new client. I will probably use it exclusively now except for my EE book at work 8). It is a great improvement over KR and still maintains the UO feeling. I will be testing decor with it this afternoon and see what happens but so far its been good.

If the dev team does not add the UO font, it can and will be added via a mod once mods have been activated. UO is not UO w/o that font imho.

The original font was lost when the original art assets were also lost, I believe around the time they moved from Texas to California, thus I doubt we will see the original font added in in an official manner. There IS an "unofficial" one that was put into the custom UIs, but it tends to cause a good bit of lag... dunno how it will perform in SA yet though since no custom UIs work in SA as of right now.

Added note: Dev's did say they are would be trying to recreate something along the lines of the original font (this is something alot of people have asked for) at some point. I am thinking we have not reached that point yet.

Dermott, anything is better than what appears over my head right now... it's difficult to find a color that shows up well in all areas of the world in this current font

It's good sized client and patches JC. The graphics - as compared to KR - are a bit sharper. If you can run KR decently, this should run as well or better.

The system I have can run SA and KR (slightly better than minimal spec), but the SA client seems to not be as poor in performance on the PC as KR still is - even with tweaks.

Check things out once you've gotten all set up. I actually think the Devs did a really bangup job on this one. Still some bugs left, but overall I like it.

I personally thinks that SA, which uses the KR base terrain with the static objects from 2D (trees, etc) looks better, landscape wise, than either 2D or KR. The 2D ground always reminded me of ground from something like Jagged Alliance 2 or other vintage games, and the plants were too blurry in KR.

They just announced open beta on the uo.com website. Someone explain what they fixed.
KR had this bug where the graphics looked good. They stomped that one right out.

And when are they gonna stomp out your pathological lying issue, Eric?

Comparing the graphics on the new SA client shown on this thread it is sad to say that it is no way close to the KR client.

A lot of improvements yes on the antiquated 2D, however it just doesn't make the grade for a more enjoyable feast for the eyes while playing UO.

Honestly we must ask why didn't UO just improve KR? I believe most people don't like KR simply because they find it hard to get used to it as their primordial reason. But so were we till we finally learned the ropes.

That is fine so let 2D alone as it is for those who likes it. But we are pretty sure there are many who have now turned to KR in spite of it's shortcomings but then again 2D is far from perfect too most specially on the graphics (like playing inside a comic book feel), moreover 3D is the way to go KR was a good try to start good things for the game. Now we find ourselves being hard sold to accept 1997 graphics in an enhanced mode again?

Just to rub it in the picture I have on a decorative topiary will speak for itself comparing it to the SA graphics which still shows it in the same form as in 2D.

See the tapestries it's glory will never show on SA or 2D either..now just think about it. As you can see I can Macro anything on KR quite easily for my needs.

Well the SA client sure runs better than KR did, when it was in beta.

I would think many 2d players will like this. Its like a time warp back a few years. KR players- well not so much. It would be great to have a KR foliage option.

The new map is great.
Targeting improved
2d item detail clearer than I expected.

To be honest, I think that decorative topiary is fugly. Always have. It looks like some little kids tied some yarn and beads onto a perfectly good shrub. And I actually LIKE most of the KR plant graphics. But not that one ... its hideous.

I'm putting together a montage of images from KR and SA... both at default zoom levels (* on the number pad setting) with a mixture of plants, house tiles and a few other things to show the differences I dislike the most... to show what I see UO losing.

The Stygian Abyss client is the KR client with a year's worth of work done on it. They changed the name because of all the bad connotations Kingdom Reborn now has. It could have become the best client ever but people will never look past the name.

Yes I agree, however it is horrendous on both 2D and SA :D

For those who thinks that SA is an improvement of KR :danceb:

I tried a google search for uofont. I did find a link to a site, but I didn't follow it. I think it's out there, 'borrowed' by the same people who 'borrowed' the client. It seems fair to me that the current Dev team could 'borrow' it back from the same source?

Having a gigantic cache can be worse than pulling fresh data from the hard disk. The latency time searching all that RAM will keep going up the more of it there is. The 2D client stays around 150MB and still feels faster than the new SA client.
This is an absurd statement.

UO using memory to cache objects/houses/etc. is a good thing, IF that's what it's doing.

What you need to look for is whether it releases that memory in a fashion that doesn't cause excessive slowdown when launching another memory-intensive app.

Should be relatively easy to test.
