Finally ready to "do it" and make my SP character. My first love in UO is taming - UO's got the most complex, deep, varied pet/taming system of any MMO out there, so I'm really thinking of going tamer. But of course, taming's the hardest skill to raise, takes the longest before you really "shine", and this is the "hardest" server. Am I out of my mind? :D I know people hate (or at least dislike!) tamers a lot... So I could be shooting myself in the foot there too.

If I do decide to go tamer, what template should I look at? On Carebear shards I always run taming/lore/vet/magery/meditation/eval... I probably need more variation here?

Only full time PvP tamers meet with any real disdain. No shame in defending your self and it is your dime. Play as you will.

I'm no template expert. I have had taming with stealth andmagery for gating for three years. I am not experimenting with barding skills and running a low level taming skill with archery, saving stealth for when I am solo farming or doing spawns.

Skilling taming is not that bad on SP tho. Find the chart that tells ya what to tame at what level and once ya get to RoT, just hit tame on the timer. Vet and lore you can work on in a safe house while training your first pets. I have some chicken lizard eggs ready to hatch if ya don't have any pets yet. From what I am reading, the bouras make good intermediate pets, but I haven't tested mine out much yet.

Yeah, I'm not coming "primarily" for the PvP. I know it will happen (duh), but I'm mainly planning only to fight in self-defense.

What sort of tamer templates work out here? I'm sure the stock PvM-only template isn't the best choice...

Kelmos right. I have always played the hated stealth tamer, but no one ever had any trouble killing me. So it really depends on what ya want.

There are others better suited to answer template questions. *nods*

Are you going with the NEW route?

Once you get taming into ROT, it's not nearly as bad as on the other shards :)

You may be limited in daily gains, but at least you will actually gain more than once every few hours

That's cool. I've had 5 GM+ Tamers on Carebear shards, so skilling Taming itself is nothing new - the only thing new will be dealing with RoT but... no biggie hehe.

What skills should I start the toon with?

I don't see any reason NOT to. It seems, from the outsider's perspective, that a person would be insane to not take advantage of that resource!

I'd say go with.....
Taming
Lore
Vet
Magery

Then whatever other two skills you'd like. Feel free to mix it up.

Archery/Tactics
Mysticism/Imbuing
Music/(Disco/peace/provo)
Necro/SS
Spellweaving/Med
Fencing/Poison

With imbuing, you can get enough mana regen from a cheap suit, so you can get away with no med if you're not trying to pump out magical damage. Necro can give you lich form for extra mana regen. Spellweaving is just such a mana hog, I'd say you'd want both med and mana regen.

are you considering factions if so i like to run
magery 120
eval 120
resist 120
taming 120
lore 110
vet 80
med 50
and use mana regen on factoin items orny crysiline and rbc dci from fey legging and mace and shield glasses and with umbing mana regen on arms gloves and gorget which is about 17 man regen total also use scnp -20 mage wep for defense

Do whatever YOU know or like best for your lil pixel character to become here.

I had a friend come over here from Chesapeake some years ago. He was always was a tamer and loved taming. When he came here he spent weeks trying to make a pvp chr. and hated it.

I told him MAKE YOUR TAMER you are a tamer at heart.

He listened.

So here he was finally with the skills and his nightmare and a ww. for his first kinda bigger pets.

Someone attacked him... he died, his nightmare died, and his white wyrm died.

And all I could do was laugh and say....did ya forget to say FLUFFY ALL KILL ?

He was born in trammel ..........first time he got attacked here and every time afterwards, I guess he just forgot, that he even could shout 'fluffy all kill' to defend himself and just could not get used to being attacked even with fire breathin pets and junk, he kept dying 'in shock'. He just was not a fel ruleset get used to it, sort of guy, I guess . :)

He didn't last long on Siege ! Anyhow...if you are a tamer at heart MAKE ONE. Who cares what others think about tamers or whatever templates, you paying to play what YOU enjoy playing more, even on Siege.

Just do not forget to shout if ya need to.......FLUFFY ALL KILL ! :)

I was born when there was no Tram or Fel... And no penalty for going red or anything either. That's been ages, but I suspect in 2-4 weeks of "forced Fel" I'll get my "DIE IN A FIRE!!!!!!!" legs back...

If I go Tamer, and let's face it, I probably am - I'll probably be experimenting with pack instinct animals. :D

I'm thinking of starting with 50 Taming and Vet just to "jump start" things. Or should I start with something else?

If you want to tame, definitely start with 50 taming. The 50 vet, I'd say, is pretty easy to get without starting with it. Though that does assume you don't mind wasting bandages to get there.

Eh, I don't mind wasting bandages, assuming I can find a way to earn bandages, heh. This will be an exciting new adventure. I haven't started with nothing in ages. Even when I dabble on other servers, I x-shard a character with several million gold. ;)

Can't do that here! Wheee!

I am so not the tamer ! :) That darn unicorn is one of my *can not leave Ultima Online till I up taming on that tamer ...so my unicorn *bonds* with her some year !! :)

But if ya wish to get around to get to whatever creatures you will need magery, to add to taming lore vet etc.

Oh and whenever ya get to dragons...do not forget some of us mere puny crafters never can nor will get barbed hides nor horned hides on our own cuz we'd be dead...so SELL US them hides that you find in dungeons off dead dragons, and post em for sale here maybe..even get rich. :)

PM me and I weill set you up with a set of Imbued Jewls
13 tame
13 lore
13 vet
7 magery
7 streg

will make the journey much easier...

As much as is pains me I would also suggest you do the whole hide, stealth thing...

I run
114 Tame
115 Lore
93 Vet
120 mage
100 Hide
108 Ninja
75 Stealth

With jewls I max out Tame and Lore and have 105 vet.

I wish I could run Disco but having the ability to pop smoke and stealth away saves alot of headaches!

Let me know if you need help getting a few pets. Once you get to ROT you will love training on Siege.

LOL - that's the kind of "on Siege we do this..." types of tips I need. Heh, on regular shards I just buy tons of bolts of cloth from NPCs and cut em up. But that costs money...

DEFINITELY start with 50 taming. And probably 50 vet depending on your secondary set of skills. You will most likely want at least some magery, to be able to gate or gate off of scrolls. Not fun running around with a pet everywhere. You'll obviously take taming/lore/vet (but you wont' always need vet). From there the popular remaining skills are:

hide/stealth/ninja - very very defensive set of skills. You can go anywhere you want with no risk and with smokebombs you can get yourself out of any jam. Plus moving at mounted speeds with a greater dragon. I'd also venture to guess that most people take this because it allows them to hunt while not really having to pay attention to the screen.

Mage/Med/Eval OR archery/tactics/anat(heal) - allows you to fight alongside your pet, depending on your preference of mage/archery. Most people go mage.

Music/Discord or Peace - peace makes things easy. Discord makes you very very powerful since you can take on almost anything with your greater dragon.

I have to (happily!) admit this is NOT what I expected when asking for help here. :)

Very happy to be wrong this time.

You've all been very very helpful and once I'm home from work I'll roll my Siege character. I'll probably use my UDIC name, Sumerian Dragon.

Still not sure on final template. I understand the power and utility of the whole stealth/ninja thing, but ... Nah. :D SP isn't supposed to be about taking the easy route anyway, right?

The idea of an archer/tamer appeals to me - and it's something I've never done.

I am excited about shifting to this too, though I am not sure how to go about archery other than having archery and tactics. Dex is important I hear. Do not know what to look for in jewels or bows.

i've built maxed out tamers on ... um ... 5 shards now . yes i'm a glutton for punishment . (i know) of course i built one here and let me tell ya , you are gonna LOVE rot for taming . its SOOOOOO much better than prodo shard gains .

i too ran the eval mage tamer on prodo so i built it here . the 20 magery scroll will cost you around 4 mil . but if you can find a cheap 10 that should do till you can do champ spawns and get your own 20 . you will fizzle gate way too much at gm. at 110 you still fizzle but its workable.

also id reccomend saving a few veterin rewards for claiming soulstones . (or even buy a few if you have to ea sells em for 10 bucks each)

ive found that being able to switch out eval and med for hide stealth ninja can be a lifesaver in certain circumstances . i have 120 eval & 120 med which i swap for 100 hide 80 stealth and 60 ninja (one good ninja ring gets you into llama form)

other times ill use 120 music 120 discord. (nothing like a good firehorn to blast away the first level of a champ spawn.) also if you want to be able to take on the biggest monsters discord is a serious boon , but go ahaid and build your mage tamer first .

id recommend being elf as you cant ride the cu without it and you cant clothing bless the pads here . there is some logic to being a gargoyl as you can "fly" at mounted speed and still have a superdragon trotting along behind .
this is ok except for the fact that you will outrun your pet even at unmounted speeds . so while gargoyl flight would allow you to run away, it means leaving the poor dragon behind.
that and the fact that gargoyls cant use any of the human artifacts makes them kinda suck.
personally i stayed elf . i can find other ways to escape.

i had a friend who ran the archer tamer . hed use the heavy crossbow to dismont folks and then sic the dragon on them . it was rather affective and he WAS hated for it and it requires running high dex.

id rather not ... i dunno maybe some day . i can swap skills fine with no delay on the soulstones lately . but swapping out the dex is annother issue . you still cant gain more than a few stats per day under rot ...

id save that idea for a couple soulstones way down the road maybe
(besides , bollas are almost as effective)

stealth tamers are pretty hated around here , but if your gonna use it for self defense people wont complain too much.
stealth is almost manditory if you want to do the red keys on travesty.

welcome to siege and dont let the tamer haters get to ya . just play honorably and phuk what they say... its your game.

edit = i guess i should mention , this IS siege . expect to get pkd . probably allot . dont get mad . get even .

I was in a hurry and it was the pic i could find. I hope everyone got the idea. I was basically telling him to have some balls and maybe play a non gimp temp. Sorry but taming is a freaking joke I really wish they would nerf tames in pvp already, why should the most powerful pvm temp also be the most powerful pvp temp.

I jst started building a mage tamer on siege a few days ago, and in my limited (but agonizingly recent) experience

START WITH 50 TAMING.

I've done tamers before, but always from 50 (and my first was from 85 with a adv char token). While gains are constant on practically anything at lower levels, its still ust GREULING wandering around looking for goats and cows n such. Moreover, magery flies right up at lower levels, so start that really low. Same with passive gain skills including vet; as you train your first pets, vet gains will be a natural byproduct of the process.

Hiding is a good consideration, even if you just stone it off later. It gives you a basic way to avoid pvp, and helps in those difficult pvm moments as well (like when 3 ogres gang up on you, its hilarious to be threatened by three ogres again=))

Really the only upside of starting taming at ess than 50 is that you'll spend way more time around sheep, which allows you to stockpile cloth for bandages later. I've also been trying to hold onto leather and such, just in case.

Finally, I strongly recommend going with NEW. They've been a huge help to me, especially with unexpected challenges I wouldn't have encountered on other shards. Its incredible what a rare and glorious thing a full spellbook really is, when you have nothing...

I don't play it because of any real or perceived power in any one area of gameplay. As I said before, I play it because it's the playstyle I love. I've had many tamers in UO. I was a Necromancer, Beastlord, and Magician in EQ1 (all pet classes). I was a Creature Handler in SWG (R.I.P.). I was a Meta-Physicist and Engineer in AO (pet classes). Hunter and Warlock in WoW (pet classes). Necromancer and Conjurer in EQ2 (see a pattern yet?). Lore-master in LOTRO (pet class again - seeing the pattern YET?).

wow big deal you like to play a tamer good for you. Now if you go back and read your original post, you might understand why i posted what i did. You ask if you are shootin yourself in the foot for playin such a gimp template. I simply tell you to have some balls.
Ya never know different shard with different rules, maybe a different template. If it is the same old **** you are looking for, than siege isnt for you. Once you start gettin dropped like your moms on the street corner you will go back home to tram.

really, i dont see it as that. I (the person who wrote it) is basically telling you to have some balls and dont play a gimped out template, that a 5 year old could play effectively. Is that a better translation for you. It seems like you still havent gone back and reread your op. I guess not all turds are created equally, but a turd is still but a turd nonetheless.

If you want to maximize this template as far as pvm damage is concerned. I would suggest your skill set be: Taming, lore, vet, archery, tactics, chivalry, bushido. The only real downside to this is no gating. I would suggest going factions just for the bonus of having the faction gear: it would make it much easier to get 4/6 casting.

Yes, as long as your suit kept your mana up. If you want healing, you have to cram in anatomy too, or trade tactics for it at the cost of some damage.

Chiv would be better to solo stuff. Anat/healing would be better if you had a second dexxer to cross-heal with. As an archer, you should be getting hit less anyway, so chiv should be able to keep up.
