There's a set of gargish cloth armor in SA, that can be used instead of leather.

I've not yet had the opportunity to update the FAQs yet for the SA stuff, having used a Christmas gift to upgrade my primary crafter account to SA (and currently concentrating my efforts on raising imbuing).

I was at around 110 for a year or more because I kept running out of leather and doing the 0.1 per day. SA came out I made kilts to 120 and toward the end I may have changed to arms or legs. SA sure made that last bit easy. Just go to the cloth armor in the tailor tool gump.

I think you'll need a few thousand cloth maybe 5k or less I seem to be remembering. Remember to not use a talisman when doing skill gains unless it puts you in a sweet spot for a gain. Also, for tailoring use the resource bag to cut up all the items to save on resources and button presses.

Yes, these days you can go all the way to legendary tailor witout touching a piece of leather.

I raised tailoring from 30 using primarily these items: short pants, skirt, cloak, fur boots, kasa, oil cloth, elven shirt, gargish cloth kilt / arms.

In between the elven shirts and gargish kilt (skill 113,9-115,2) I made studded hiro sode, because the gains from the elven shirt were getting harder to come by and I needed some variation for my own entertainment. You can of course substitute elven shirts with ninja cloth hoods, they are just more costly to make, but will give you armslore gains if you need it.

Getting from 115,2 to 119,6 making gargish cloth kilts cost me:
Cloth: 11.119
Sewing kits: 80 (NPC quality)

I raised tailoring little similar way too, but changing at 96 from oil cloth to gargish cloth kilt.
I did try at 95- 96 studded gorgets with spinned but they gave 0.6 at 1k leather.
i switched to garg kilt to see how that would work only ~23% change, and got 1.4 at 1k cloth.
It only takes 1-2 cloth when you fail to make kilt so loses arent so big.
I used just scissors to cut everything and didn't use any talismans.
Now used ~16k cloth from 96 to 112.2 and still working on kilts.

The only real advantages of the cloth ninja hoods (which can take you to 115) and their leather counterparts (which can take you to 120), is the arms lore , and that instead of cutting them up, you can donate them to the Britain Library Thief NPC for collection points (something you can do with lockpicks to the same NPC when training tinker, and crooks to the animal trainer, when training your carpenter, as well).
