Skaros' Trail

HecklesLookOutTower.jpg
Heckles panted and moaned as he ascended the stairs on to Skaros' Lookout Tower. "Skaros was as old man, yet he climbed these stairs every day? I hope it will be worth my time..."

Once he'd arrived on the highest level of the Lookout Tower Heckles took a cursory look around. "A few maps, spyglasses... Nothing out of the ordinary here. Hmmm, except for this bookcase! I didn't think Skaros was much of a reader?"

Heckles ran his fingers over the books. "A primer on arms, a Treatise on Alchemy..."
Until he found a book bound in golden leather. "'The Black Cat?' Why would Skaros have a book on Black Cats? Is he that superstitious? I can't make any sense of this..."

"Bah, why did the King have to pick me to be Spymaster?" Heckles sighed.

OOC Information:

King Blackthorn has charged Heckles to lead a Royal Investigators mission.

In the previous investigation Skaros the Spymaster was implicated in several murders. He has since disappeared! Your job is to find out where Skaros is, or where he will be. So he can be arrested!
  1. Visit Heckles at Castle Blackthorn. (optional)
  2. Start the search in Skaros' Lookout Tower, on top of the west wing of Castle Blackthorn. Follow Skaros' Trail and try to figure out where to find Skaros so we can arrest him.
  3. Write a report with your findings.
A partial report will be rewarded with 1 Royal Investigator Point. A Full report will get 2 points and a full report with pictures gets 3 points.

Reports may be posted in the mailbox at the Counselors Hall in Britain, sent to me at [email protected] or posted as a reply to this thread using the spoiler tag.

Working together on the investigation is allowed (in fact, it makes it more fun) but everybody has to write and submit their own reports.

The mission ends on Thursday the 29th of January. All reports must be submitted by then.

Hint: NPCs will usually respond to: name, job, bye and their own name. If you want to ask a follow-up question, use words the NPC used. Capitalized words are keywords!
Hint: Some NPCs will talk a lot on their own. They will not respond to keywords. Just listen to what they have to say.

Golden book about cats is not readable. Instead it a shortcut to Skaros' bedroom.
There is another golden book at bedroom, working as shortcut to Skaros' lookout tower.

Mariah the Maid mumbles about cleaning bedroom and she puzzled about Skaros current location. He left to-do list on table:
1. pick up papers at the Customs office in Britain.
2. look up spell at the Encyclopedia Magicka in Trinsic.

Worth checking this to-do list to find is it already done by Skaros or not.

I asked Manuel the customs agent about papers. He told me Skaros asked him for blank identity papers few days ago and left to First Library direction. Agent thinks papers was for some secret mission.

Lets check First Library. I found one more strange golden book in bookcase. Title is "The Facts in the Case of M.Valdemar". As expected, its shortcut to another location.

Jhelom Library! There are 2 more golden books there and room with sign "Royal Investigator Archives".
Archives are filled with 4 years old reports and lot more golden books to check.
*spoilers removed*
Somehow I appeared at Skaros' Office inside secret cave. I found his scheduler for next 2 weeks.
26-31 january - work at secret location.
1 february - return from secret work, meeting at Great Meeting Hall at 8pm WET/9pm CET

There are some other interesting persons at cave. Koba for example, he asking for help to escape from jail.

Next in to-do is spell in Trinsic.
I found Rince the Encyclopedist, but he was too busy to talk about anything. Maybe I need to visit him again later.

After some time Rince responded to questions about Skaros. Few days ago Skaros asked Rince about blocking spell to prevent magic travel. He got this spell and left in direction of the Paladin's Library.
Not surprised to find pair of golden books to travel between Paladin's Library and Jhelom Library.

Looks like Skaros completed his to-do list. We can find him at some unknown secret location next week or wait until 1st february at Great Meeting Hall.

Where is Skaros? The report of Sparrow. Duke of Moonglow.

After speaking to Heckles I made my way to Skaros watchtower and searching there I found the golden book he mentioned. The golden book titled 'The Black Cat' (also a book by the noted writer Edgar Allen Poe) is actually a teleport to another location,it transported me to Skaros bedroom
There I found Mariah the Maid who mumbled about cleaning the bedroom and stating the bed had not been slept in, she was puzzled about Skaros current location. On the table was a copy of Skaros 'To Do' list.

1. pick up papers at the Customs office in Britain.

2. look up spell at the Encyclopedia Magicka in Trinsic.

First things first, so I visited the Customs Office. There I found Manuel the Customs Agent and when I asked about Skaros he informed me that Skaros had indeed been there a few days ago inquiring about BLANK identity papers. He also informed me that he only gives out new papers in cases of Birth or theft UNLESS you are an Investigator. Apparently he had given some to Skaros as he is known to be the Head Investigator and probably needed them for a secret mission. He went on to say that Skaros left to go to the first Library.

I followed in Skaros footsteps and went to the first Library. Searching the library I found one further Golden book, this, also a book by Edgar Allen Poe, was in fact another teleport. This took me to Jhelom Library and two further books, both titled as Poe stories, again they are both teleports. One returns you to the First Library the other takes you to the Paladins Library in Trinsic. In the bookcase where you arrive yet another Poe title returns you to Jhelom Library and searching the bookcases there I found nothing apart from what appears to be an old treatise by Luther concerning the Mists of Yew. Perhaps it is just a simple way to travel quickly to Trinsic. I therefore returned to Jhelom to search further there. On arrival I talked to Armstrong the Archivist who told me that Skaros calls there often to look through old reports. He suggested I go downstairs and look round the Royal Investigators Archives for myself. This I did, in one bookcase I found 'The Premature Burial' this took me to the Office of Jordan Jurrel but a search there revealed nothing to aid me. 'The Pit and the Pendulum' took me to Lord British Castle where once again I found little to help me. It would seem these books are just a quick way for Skaros to move around unseen. 'The Purloined Letter' is a route to a room in Yew Prison. In the last bookcase was a copy of 'The Masque of the Red Death', this appears to be the means of travel to inside the Councillors Guild. A search here revealed two further books, The first 'The Haunted Palace' transports you to a hidden Royal Investigators Secret Headquarters and adjacent to where you arrive is a secret passage which returns you to the Councillors Hall.

I explored this region which was certainly a revelation to me, a Sergeant of the Royal Investigators. This is an extensive area and it looks like Skaros must have long had his own agenda to arrange for this to be built. His own little Kingdom almost. It is interesting that he has chosen the works of Poe, an acknowledged Master of the Macabre as the apparent titles of these teleports. There is a large Meeting Hall, an armourers, a cryptographers room, and, and, here I could not believe my eyes in a cell..... I found KOBA!.
I spoke with him and at first he thought I was there to interrogate him and then for some reason that I was there to rescue him. He told me that he has a plan and that he wanted me to get word out that he was being held and tortured. Alternatively he thought I could submit a petition to the King as he had been held for years. He stated that he was arrested years ago on charges of treason and inciting rebellion and admits he did and that it was for the people and was a revolution. The revolt failed and he was whisked away put him in the cell and he has been there ever since. In a cell next door is the fine horse Longfellow with an unkempt mane and looking the worse for wear, why he is here is a question I would like to know the answer to. Could it be that the real reason for the murder of Antony the Horse Trainer was simply to take possession of this fine and now neglected horse? Both cells are next to a larger room with some instruments of torture in it would appear that Koba might well be justified in his complaint of torture.

Further on I found Skaros Office, in the bookcases are several golden books all with Poe titles, on a desk I found Skaros schedule and it says that from now until Feb 1st he will be working at a secret location but on that day at 8pm he will be in the Meeting Hall, who he might be meeting would be interesting to know but we do now know where and when he will be on that day. The other golden books teleport you to various locations around the Kingdom such as the Office of the Governor of Moonglow demonstrating how Skaros was able to move around unseen so successfully.

These findings conclude what I discovered following the trail from the Customs office so I decided to investigate the destination in Trinsic - on arrival there I could find nothing in the bookcases and so I spoke to Rince the Encyclopedist. Once again he said Skaros was here just a few days ago and was seeking information on a BLOCKING spell which is apparently a way of stopping magical travel, it would seem he found the spell he needed and left towards the Paladins Library, probably to make use of the golden book there to travel onwards.

So in conclusion Skaros has carried out both 'to do' items and has use of a 'blocking' spell. We have established that he was responsible for the disappearance and imprisonment of Koba and we have knowledge of where he will be on the 1st Feb and also the time. I trust His Majesty will find this information useful.

Everything I kept away from my report was revealed in Sparrows' report. I have nothing to add as for today.

Reporting to a fool is nothing new for royal investigators, but once again we were supposed to report to the actual one. That being Heckles. Apparently the mission is to find traces of Skaros, so that he can be arrested for his supposed crimes. I wonder if we will manage to make an actual arrest for once, rather than just murdering him like the mob did the last times.

We often saw Skaros use secret passageways attached to bookshelves, so I checked the shelf up on his tower and discovered a strange book which opened a passageway to his room within the castle. Apparently Skaros used it to get to the tower and back unseen. Within his room I met Mariah, his maid. She told me that Skaros had apparently not been in his room. His bed was unmade and there were no traces of him working at the desk, either. On said desk I found a to-do list, which listed two tasks. The first was to pick up papers at the customs office in Britain. The second to look up a spell at the Encyclopedia Magicka in Trinsic.

At the customs office I met Manuel the customs agent. From him I learned that Skaros had been there a few days ago to pick up blank identity papers. Apparently, investigators are allowed to pick up such documents. Afterwards, Skaros had apparently left in the direction of the First Library. In there I found another one of Skaros’ special books. In quick order I discovered that Skaros can use them to get to Jhelom and then to Trinsic as well. It is quite disturbing how efficiently he can move around and spy on various cities.

In Jhelom I ended up in the library as well. In the back I discovered the royal investigator archives. I am not sure whether these are new, since I had never seen them, but then again, it has been quite a while since I visited. Down in the cellar I found LOTS of secret passages. One led to Yew prison and court, ending in one of the offices. The next led to Lord British’s or Queen Dawn’s private chamber, which is outright outrageous. One tunnel led to Trinsic, where I used the chance to investigate the Encyclopedia Magicka.

There I learned that Skaros had apparently asked after a blocking spell, designed to prevent magical travel. From there he had returned to the Investigator archives. I found another gateway to Minoc. Through another link through the counsellors’ hall in Britain I finally discovered the secret investigators hideout in a cavern. I was quite surprised that there is something like that. Despite my rank in the investigators I was never told, despite these caves being rather extensive. I found a huge meeting hall with a huge vat full of black powder and a locked gate leading to another exit. There were also maps, one of the world and one of Britain. There is an armoury, a cartography room with maps depicting all the mayor cities. There is a chemistry place, producing barrels of substances, amongst them a barrel full of what appears to be poison. There were bundles of arrows and bolts as well. There is a torture and prison area, in which the horse Longfellow was apparently locked up. Worse, in the cell next door I found none other than Koba. He was apparently locked up and tortured for years, without ever being brought before a court to receive proper justice.

In Skaros office I finally found something useful. He will be in the meeting hall on Monday, the 2nd February, in the evening. In the days before he apparently plans to work at a secret location, afterwards he has listed various strange things like “drown a puppy”. Furthermore, there are lots of shelves with more books opening secret passages to all across the realm.

I am convinced that the cave I found is more than just a headquarter. It is a deep glance into Skaros’ soul and what I saw there is horrible and dark. Secrecy, injustice, torture, espionage and preparations for violence and murder… there seems to be no end to the depravity. I am ashamed to have been part of such a group, even though I did not know what lay beneath the cover of justice and investigation.

What is worst though are the subtle hints at something terrible. There are several maps of Britain all around. And there is a huge vat of black powder, wired to a clock. Could this be a huge bomb, maybe to strike at Britain’s capital? We must try to arrest Skaros and find out, before his plans can be finalised and executed.

Excellent reports all! Your points have been recorded.

There is a small update to this event:
Originally I'd intended to follow up on this Royal Investigators mission on Sunday 1st of February. Unfortunately, real-life got in the way and so I decided to postpone to the 8th of February. That means the mission will be available a bit longer as well; until Tuesday 3rd of February.
