The issue as I see it is not that these people are trying to add value to the game. This is simply another form of griefing other players.
Hmmmm...helping stop unattended macroing is not griefing, in most people's minds, anyway. YOU may not have been UMing, but we will get to that part in just a bit, so please bear with me.
To the above posted no one said hi to me, either time so who's truelly the ingrate? Myself for playing the game or someone else for not even trying to contact my char?
This would be an oversight, if the person didn't attempt to contact your character. However, as none of us were truly there, except you...we will have to take your word for it. That's cool and all...but you can hopefully understand the trepidation of most here to say that you were right, and the Pager was wrong.
If I page on a player and suspect that the GM has actually shown up, questioned said player I've reported and then decided that said player is following the rules of fair game play then I should decide to let the issue rest. In the original posting I stated that this was not the case as have other players noted the exact same thing, paging upon the same player over and over for something like bashing a golem is silly.
As far as I know, no tag appears over your Golem Bashing Head that tells any potential pagers that you have already been contacted by a GM, that you are REALLY there, and so, no further action needs to be taken by any other players. If that occurred, I would be able to understand your being upset.
But since there are NO tags to let folks know that a person has already called a GM, then it would stand to reason that if you are standing there bashing a Golem, that others could page on you. It certainly isn't outside the realms of expected actions, in my opinion.
If a player is script (insert event) and a GM comes about, questions the player and lets them go by default that player must be following the rules. Is is right? Most likely not but the GM has made his/her ruling and this person is the voice of EA so again by default the rules of the game must be its ok to do this action as long as you are around to answer the GM or what ever else you have to do to avoid trouble.
I'm not saying it is the case with you, so please don't take this the wrong way...but I understand that there are Scripts that will sound an alarm when a GM arrives and talks to your character. That way, the person who may be unattended can get notice that a GM is there, and engage them in conversation.
In addition, there is no way for anyone to know, even the Pager themselves, what the outcome of the GM/Player Interaction was...so even still...no one really knows if what the person paged on was doing was legal
I'm sorry that people see a issue with this and most of the time I would suspect that the player who is paging is correct in suspecting that something wrong is going on but in my specific case where I have just started a new char on a new shard to get a GM showing up twice in as many days is odd. Again I've never had this happen before on anyother shard I've played and truelly I take this to define what the regular players of this server are like. No new players wanted and we would like to keep this area all to our own. Good thing on the main EA pre-pub test server....sigh.
The emphasis is mine.
Now...in the same paragraph YOU tell US that NORMALLY (Most Of The Time) one could assume there is an unattended person doing something that is against the TOS. Then...you tell us all that because it's YOU...doing something that many do unattended...because it's YOU and they paged once, or more than once...it's "odd".
It's not odd. Not odd at all. You started a brand new character, doing something done frequently unattended, on a new shard...and are amazed that more than one person would page on you?
That type of thinking (that folks shouldn't page on you for potentially breaking the rules) will never cease to amaze me. Even in the same breath that you are readily admitting that in MOST cases, paging would be a valid and justified action, you say they should nOT have paged on you.
In the end...if you are at your computer, and you have to press your Macro Button for Golem Bashing again (I mean really...how long, exactly, does that take you?), because someone is trying to help stop cheating in the game, I say it's a small price to pay. Even pressing it three or four times (5 seconds times four is still less than a minute even...who friggin cares?) is not going to put any noticeable dent in your training time, I am sure.
For me it would be. I am always at my computer, so even with a script running, I have zero fear of being "caught"...and I do not mind letting a GM know I am not cheating...even three or four times in a row.
Maybe that's just me.
But I am certain you misunderstood the spirit of the page, and with an open mind and positive attitude, you may have seen it:
Welcome to our shard! If you are a cheater, just leave now. We will page incessantly on you. If you are attended, have no fear! Just know that we DO care, and we WILL page.
Maybe...I could be wrong...but certainly maybe?
If that bothers you, then yes...definitely find yourself a shard where they don't disturb anyone...even those that could be, and likely are, by your own words...cheating the system.
