Tempus fugit; the sun is now setting on the inaugural term of office for the King's Council and in a few days we will be seeing the contest for the next set of town governors begin.
Truth be told, the first session of the Council has been less than auspicious thanks to a combination of factors. Firstly there was the lack of understanding of what would actually be involved in being a governor, which contributed to two towns (Jhelom and Trinsic) not having anyone run at all (Trinsic has just a caretaker in charge). And of the seven governors that did get elected, two (*coughs* Minoc, Vesper) disappeared without trace as soon as they took office. On top of this, King Blackthorn has been so busy the past couple of months that only two Council meetings have actually taken place, and those were only attended by two and one governors respectively. Consequently, no requests for town improvements were even proposed let alone actioned.
And neither did the trade deals have a huge impact on the general population. Thanks to a combination of high pricing from the trade cartels and a gouging daily tax rate enforced by the Crown, only three towns (Britain, New Magicnia, Yew) managed to keep a trade deal in effect for much of the term (kudos to New Mag for keeping theirs running for the entire period).
But now the next chapter is about to begin, and hopefully we will see a much more dynamic King's Council this time around. There have been a whole host of new settlers in the land since the initial elections and perhaps some of these will be minded towards the political life. And with rumours that the King may be thinking of reducing or even abolishing the town treasury taxes, perhaps this autumn will turn out to be a prosperous one for all.
Anyone who is thinking of running for office somewhere with a character who is presently a citizen of another town will need to take action as soon as possible. After renouncing citizenship, it takes one week before you can declare again. As the governorship nomination period itself lasts only one week, if you have not resigned by the end of the month then you will be unable to run for office anywhere but the town you are currently a citizen of.
Running for office requires you to be of "adored" or better status and the quickest way to achieve this is by donating resources to the town Minister of Trade. If you currently have zero loyalty in a town, then a donation of 20k boards/ingots will get you to the required level.
