I'm interested in trying out Throwing, but I'm out of character slots and I'm not interested in converting my Swordsman into a Gargoyle.

Does the racial restriction many ANY sense? Should it be lifted? Does Throwing suck so much that it doesn't even matter?

I might agree to letting all characters learn Throwing, but I don't think Gargoyles should be allowed archery... I don't think we really want flying archers.....

What benefit does flying have over simply being mounted? I assumed the same restrictions for movement would apply... Just curious. I haven't played or looked into Gargoyles enough, perhaps.

I have only done throwing on the test shard, but I didn't get any weapon or template that was good. In fact my character could hardly kill a mongbat or a snake.

Try the test shard out you can test anything there and could test it for pvp or pvm.

Throwing is crap anyways , go for it. Gargoyles are only good for imbuing , go for it. Haha.

Its a purely graphical issue. It wont change.

... so humans can participate in the trash skill known as Throwing?

I voted NO - leave the restriction in place. Try a garg on TC or another shard to work throwing.

Also, if this restriction is lifted, let's just take off the Elves Only stuff as well. Make everything in the game usable by any character. Racial characteristics is what makes things unique ... let them be - including this restriction.

Throwing is a joke skill, and even with 120 in throwing, parry, and swords it is fairly useless, misses a lot and not much damage, which varies with range. Add to that the fact that even though you have 120 parry your shield blocks nothing and never takes damage. It is a bad idea to begin with having to use 360 skill points but on top of that it is broken, just doesn't work. An archer does twice as much damage.

initially i was all for throwing sucking since i didn't want it to be better than archery. but i think it might suck just a tad too much. fact is, to me at least, that throwing should suck most of the time. but then when you get in that 'sweet spot' it does tons of damage. i imagine it'd all even out in the end.

but no, other than the advantage to imbuing, throwing is just about all gargoyle's got. i don't want them to become a race no one plays--quite the contrary, i want more of them flying around! so fix throwing and keep it on gargoyles!

i guess originally i had thought of gargoyles as that 'advanced' race that people only play when they've mastered being a human and an elf. like, the skills are tougher to figure out, the armor sucks, but oh boy, if you ever play it right, you'll do a lot of damage.

We'll here's the thing: I can understand racial restrictions on armor and wearables. Not so much on weapons.

But a skill called "Throwing"? That just doesn't make any logical sense at all. I think Throwing should not only suck less, but be available to anyone who... well, has arms and hands.

To get a little nostalgic, one of my favorite weapons in Ultima 7 was the magical throwing axe. Outside of the Blackrock Sword and the Hoe of Destruction, I always assigned it to a party member (usually Iolo). I assumed that was where they were going with this, since they even mentioned "throwing axes" at one point.

The last thing UO needed was another useless skill. We have plenty of those already!

Nope.

I'm just not persuaded by the arguments, for my part.

It's a subjective thing, I guess.

Can I ask why?

I mean, the only argument I seem to be getting is that the skill sucks. It is subjective, sure, but if you don't want to use Throwing, you don't have to. So what is the reason you don't want other Humans/Elves using it?

Don't mean to antagonize, just curious!

Don't forget the argument that it would require massive new amounts of art. I think that's the most cogent argument.

Players are saying it sucks because the end result of using it is not upto par with say IE: SoulSeeker....(I said example)

Now, either they beef up Throwing or, nerf all other fighting skills, and make the game a challenge again. Once a prima donna always a prima donna.

We have players soloing this and soloing that, and God forbid it can't be done in under 60 seconds. Then, you have the PVP's....those guys are a whole other class.

I'm working it, I can care less what anyone thinks or says.....it takes skill to kill with it, and some thinking, thus tactics....real tactics.

As far as humans, and elfies......humans got too much, and most slugs are to lazy to make a gargoyle. They need to make a skill specifically for the keebler crowd.

Throwing is too bad unless archery is too good. It's one or the other.
I think racial restriction should be kept and throwing should indeed be at least on par with archery.

I am just amazed that SA is released for so long and there's yet a balancing pass made to gargoyles and throwing.

You mean why I'm not persuaded by the arguments to remove the racial restriction?

*shrugs* Just a subjective judgment, really. I make no claims otherwise.

I'm just at the end of the day more attracted to the idea that it's a special gargoyle thing.

Honestly that's really it.

There's basically 2 approaches I can think of to having races in a game like this. One is to make it only cosmetic; the other is to have meaningful differences that don't make one race clearly superior to the other, just different from each other.

The Throwing skill is one of those differences.

Like I said....All quite subjective, by definition.
