Should 1 character class be "Richer" than others?

I"m currently bored and mainly playing my Thunter. Lockpick/Detect/Remove/Hide/Stealth/Tracking...with nothing left really. I'm capable of making 10k in about 5-10 minutes if no one else is hitting chests. But with the present cost of things like essences going for 250k per 10, that means my Thunter, if I choose to only play that character, will need to work for 3 hrs minimum to buy 10 essences of blah blah..

I've never ventured out into SA to gather these myself so I'm not quite sure how long it takes to get 10, or even how many drop per corpse. What if I only played a Thunter template? Would that mean that I would never be allowed to own any of the really cool things?

Do I have to have a main support character like a Tamer, in order to pay for things? Should I be buying my gold with real life cash and then acquiring stuff that way ?

I realize that Thunter/Fisher chests are getting an overhaul soon, and I'm not asking that every chest has (10) of everything in it, but is it too much to ask for at least a small small small chance of acquiring a little bit of everything? I would rather spend 6 months picking chests for a small chance at an arty, than pick chests for 3 months to then buy it for the gold I gathered....seriously, am I asking for too much?

If you have never stepped foot into SA then why are you comparing a thunter to gathering essence?

I think if you took the time to see how time consuming it is to get 10 essence, you would answer your own question.

And yes, I believe some templates/play styles should be richer than others.

If I group and do peerless and get crimsons which sell for 15mil usually, then yes I should be richer than someone doing simple gold farming through easy methods.

I've stepped foot, I've just never gathered any of the special ingredients. You must not have played back when the richest characters were Tailors/Blacksmiths...I don't group, but what sux about todays UO is that Crimsons sell for 15 mil, group or not. And picking chests with a true Treasure Hunter is not always Easy.

Yes. Because if you choose to play only that character, knowing there isn't much gold in it, you also chose poverty for that character.

Also, yes, character classes should determine how much gold you earn. Risk versus Reward. Training leads to income, all that.

Luckily, there are 5 to 6 other character slots on your account. You can choose a profession that pays :)

There always seems to be one type of character that has the most money (like the crafters you said). I liked for when a bit fishing made really good money, because I've always enjoyed fishing and MIB hunting. I have a 'pure' T-hunter but haven't used him in a long long time (because of the chests not being worth it).

I think around 2000ish was a great balance. Tram was around so tamers could farm pretty good gold, and made great money selling pets. T-hunters brought a lot of magic weapons/ID wands to sell at Brit Bank. Dexxers farmed Lich Lords and sold the magic weapons/ID wands. Blacksmiths were at the center supplying the armor (biggest money) and repairs. Tailors made most of the stuff you wore. Carpenters made a killing selling home supplies. Lumber jacks for wood, miners for ingots. Alchemists sold potions in large supply to the PvPers, the list goes on. It seemed every class was needed, and did well too.

But I think too many of those are not 'needed' anymore. Hell, you could have considered the people who bought Regs a class almost. People maxed out their Str just to be able to carry larger amounts!

Okay, I'm rambling. But I feel since a lot of Characters were made not as needed (remember real estate brokers? They were the richest by FAR), EA needs to do some balancing. I think the Thunters getting some love is a great step in that direction.

No don't buy gold with real cash. No character can make enough gold to support anything on there own. you don't make gold of the gold you get on corpses or chests. it's takes a short time to gather essenses. Go in SA gather essenses you can do 30 in 30 minutes. The Thunter has no combat skills so you will need at least mag to cast ev. gather the essences that sell for the most. Sell the essences for 250k. Use that gold to buy the esseces you need to make what you want to use. in the mean time learn the prices that people are willing to pay for things and when you see someone selling something cheap buy it from them and sell it to the people who are willing to buy it for more.

if you do create a tamer use it to sell animals. Good stats, rare colors etc.. this is harder work and takes longer.
No matter what you do the gold you want is from the players and not the system.

In a few months time you be in the 100'smillions. Do what you wish with it.

On Atlantic, the crafters and merchants are still the wealthiest players. Folks like SupSoc, Wizzax, Soran...these are not folks who are out farming essences for their riches.

They're good people. SupSoc has also accumulated wealth as a broker. Anyone can be a broker, once they establish their reputation and demonstrate their trustworthiness.

So players who spend most of their time crafting items for their vendors to sell to other players shouldn't be getting a lot of money?

I don't understand why people would have a problem with others who like to play as a merchant/crafter who ends up being rich. They spend their time supplying other players and would naturally make a good profit off each item sold.

Do what you like. Gold is easy to get. Train up a tailor or smith, do your BODS, get your kits or hammers, make great stuff and set up a vendor.

Train up a paladin and kill something fast and simple like Tsuki wolves for an hour a day.

Hell, make friends with it and ask for a mil.

You could have a good artifact thief in less than a day w/equipment, and make a decent living just stealing deco in Tokuno, the abyss, and the underworld and selling it.

I made a million in a 2 weeks lumberjacking and bowcrafting and I started with nothing but an axe and the character creation gold. I sold primarily to NPCs until I GMed. I had the mil before I even placed a vendor to sell the good bows and bulk wood.

There's really no excuse NOT to be wealthy in UO, even if you start with nothing, as long as you are willing to work for it.

Also for Garth: I haven't done maps in a while, but what good is tracking to a T-Hunter? Unless things have changed, it seems you'd be better served dropping that and adding a skill that helps with the monsters ya dig up, assuming you are soloing the maps.

Most of the time it's group players who also get materials for these crafters. So to say most crafters get these materials by themselves or through gathering skills alone for the most part is misleading. Crafters can make money but in the end they are reliant and dependant on group players.

But not every single crafting skill that can make gold relies on these big groups. One example that jumps to mind are runic kits. They could still produce items without them. Of course it is also many of those big groups that rely on crafter for the items they are using. It's a big circle. Merchants create items for hunters, hunters get some items for merchants and so on.

Well luckily as t hunter, an item like a crimson is really not something you NEED. The worst thing youre going to run into is balrons and aws, which really are not that threatening anymore.

You can NOT gather 30 essences in 30 minutes. You might be able to get 30 essence in 3 hours.

No clue what you're smoking.

Selling animals? On most shards you can't or just won't find buyers for most animals, and if you do you're not going to be selling them for millions of gold.

When was the last time you actually played UO? From your post it doesn't seem like you play at all.

I play almost everyday as most people know.Thats my rate. Enslaved golblins. essence of control whirliwind on my sampire. While doing that config potions to do more damage while fighting and joat spells such as nature fury so that when i finsh with one group the next group is ready to be pound of.Or when Im feeling mage like my Mystic-necro mage. Ev's with area wither spells and mage weapon using colossis for the spawn boss. My spellweaving tamer only for higher level critters, My necro-spellweave-mage is very powerful and fast on the attack but has to continue avoid hits but he can get hurt if hes hit so i use him for burst damages. So average of 30 per 30minutes if am slow or luck against me then 45-60min still thats the average time for me. Others differ deffinetely no 30 in 3 hours thats 1 per 6minutes too much time.
Dead shards i feel sorry for them i don't play on dead shards. Any rare color cue high stat animal sell well. I hope there not selling llamas now. Anymore questions?

Absolutely. We need a disparity of wealth among the classes. How else would we tell noble, worthy people from nasty, horrid peasants?

I think the underlying issue is you're looking at classes as.. well, classes. Your T-Hunter's template is so pure that it hurts to look directly at it. This is really all that's limiting your profitability. My dirty, gimp-ass T-Bard rakes in loads of cash. But yes, it's because he steps outside of just doing dungeon chests, maps, and guardian spawn.

I do think Treasure Hunting as a profession needs a significant boost. "Treasure Hunting" becomes an oxymoron if it's one of the less profitable activities. And make it a sustainable boost, please. I don't want to see a bunch of worthless marties all over the bank floor a month after the publish. A good place to start would be adding imbuing ingredients to chests.

Dude you're assuming that every mob drops an essence and unless they just recently changed that goblin spawn this is NOT the case.

I can run my mystic mage through there, gather up all the goblins of one wave on my dragon, cast a Hail storm and kill all of them in one go. Looting them take longer, but I definitely do not get 30 essence in 30 mins. It takes almost 5 mins for the spawn to restart.

I still don't believe you get 30 in 30 minutes, thats 1 a minute, actually its more than 1 a minute because of the downtime between spawns.

You're character is a Treasure Hunter, not a treasure getter. You should be raking in the dough on those gems though selling them to players, grab some of those spellbooks people leave laying around and fill them, or unravel that armour and start an imbuer!!

i can gather by myself many of the SA ingredients. i do not have a tamer or a mage, or a necro nor a paladin! Granted i can only take the spawn so far on some, but i do get them. And now with the chance of a drop, i don't think people mind much if i leave the mini-boss behind, though i always give them my best shot on those that i can not kill.

This is another thread that wants socialism brought into UO. Everyone deserves the same, everyone pays so everyone should have the same shineys.

It's not "Should 1 character class be "Richer" than others?" it is

Should 1 character ("who works harder at the game") be "Richer" than others? The answer? a resounding yes!!!!

Find your forte and fly!!!!!!

Thats my rate at least my fastest rate I ever got anything add in 3 minutes I just rounded of to the nearest whole number. I timed it. I average 45-1hour though if I push myself, I have no reason to lie. My worst time is 2hours for 10 "it was a very bad day". If it was 30 every 5hours then I would say 30 in 5 hours. Not every mob drops essences of course. Thats the luck of the draw. Sometimes if RNG is against you then I wouldnt be surprised if someone doesn't get anything especially if your character is bugged to the negative side. Maybe my character is bugged to the good side when I timed it who knows. But thats the beauty of streaks. These streaks definetely exist. Once I had a miner that no matter what i smelt always suceeded for over 6 months then one day I took of his gloves and he went back to succed and fails. I was very disapointed that such a little thing would of change the coding of my character.

The spawn restarting I never had a trouble with it. if I cleared every single monster I just run a few screens away to the next spawn usually undead sometimes I'll head to those lava things as they are very close and play with them during that time then run back. I did pretty well when timed of course I was going for speed. Im sure many players just take there time hanging around though and everyones experience is different. I can take punishment on the charecters i use so I have them all target me so I don't have to run and get them all the time. If the player doesn't have the spawn to him or her self then definetely it will take a much longer while as well.

So i guess when it comes to things the saying is true experience may differ while playing the game.

I find the mages are much slower then the sampire whirlwind. Going only for speed thats what I would use or even wither as that spell cast fast. They drop like flies. I havent used a wither sampire that would be interesting though. Hard to make and am sure not to feasible in everyday game play. Would be a interesting experiment
