Ship question 'Fire Portside" "Fire broadside.

How can you tell what command to give when you are at the front of the ship, distinguishing between from left or right(portside or broadside) when you are either going south, north, east,or west. Half of the time I give the wrong command to fire, according to the direction I'm moving,so I'm wasting my shots of loaded cannons because they fire on the wrong side. Any Input would be useful.
Thanks!

I stand my toon behind the front cannon facing front.

I face the same way my toon is. His Left is Port, Right is Broadside, Port has fewer letters so does Left.

Its better to make a talk macro so you can hit it at random times for added fun.

I wave my hands around, like one is my ship and one is north and then I turn my head sideways and ... fire the wrong cannon maybe once every 10 times LOL!

I do have a talk macro for both sides though and that does help. I have the arrows <--- and ---> to help me.

I think what was screwing me up, I was going by what my character had In their left hand and right hand dictating what was my port side(left) and broadside. Shield on left hand and spellbook on right.

They have the Shield in their Right hand when facing North and East.
They have their Shield in their Left hand when facing South and West.

I dont know if that method would help me fire the correct cannons.

I still haven't habited to fire whole side. Usually just use 2 cannons with their gumps. or put one more toon at third one and switch windows.
Even Pinco UI provide that nice ship icon with cannon state etc, it is something I don't use by unknown reasons.

I use classic client,i preload portside and starboard side, then fire main front cannon several times with UO assist. Basically you need to preload and ready sides for firing, before you go and seek out a new victim ship,I stay with merchant ships big and small, kill their whole crew and loot for resources. Not worried about karma that a few dragons wont cure. Make sure you have make macro keys set for saying "fire starboard broadside" and "fire port broadside" work everytime. Just make sure your ship Is lined up with other ship.

Is there anything valuable on merchant crew corpses ? I never killed even one , they are so peaceful.

nothing major average 450gp and once In a while a decent item, but pretty rare, might come down to luck. I think the tukuno ships give out the best rare resources(verite, valorite, frostwood, bloodwood). I love those ships, they take more damage. easier to kill. Also use a orc ship, deal more damage to them.

Since it takes 4 firing rotations. I put Grapeshot in the middle cannon to make the crew angry. But I just fire at Pirate ships.

i have a nice sdi suit and an orc slayer spellbook... wipes out the whole ship quickly other than the pirates.. i try and approach slowly while sticking my pet on each one as it gets in range.. seems to keep them from sailing the ship away and having to chase it while firing.. i manually use the front cannon only... slow but it works
the pets with magery mastery are nice because they will hop over and kill all the orcs before you can get on the boat... just have a pet ball to summon him back before the pirate engages heavily with the pet.
the same sdi and orc slayer spell book takes 5 chain lightning to kill the 2 orcs on each corner of the beacons too... so 20 to 24 shots of chain lightning wipes out the beacon guards

I tried both mage and mystic , with orc spell book , sure. It hits , also putting RC on beacon is fun. But my current setup is thrower with orc slayer soul glaive + 4*120 bard in the middle of ship running Provo healing buff +bard have 2 unicorns for self defense. I turn on second buff when killing beacon after guards are down. Soul glaive throws 11 tiles. So no need to use rowboat (I saw some players are using them by unknown reasons)
I like this build cuz I don't need to press spell button (but can AI orcs if I want) . Very peaceful and easy.
to hold pirate ship in place need to have your ship steady, don't come too close and do not have pets who will teleport there , don't have other characters recall to your ship. So I don't rotate my ship at all when sailing.
I use 2-3 cannons. 2 if orc ship stands with bow toward me and 3 if we are side to side. With 1 cannon it is too slow.

I too am directionally challenged when sailing. Here's how I sorted it.
Cannons can be dyed when in place by taking a metal dye tub aboard and using it on the cannon in situ (the colour is lost though if you re-deed the cannon)
On all my ships I have dyed the port side cannons purple and the starboard side cannons blue. So if I want to fire the purple cannons the command is 'fire port broadside' :D

None that I know of, but you don't have to stand by the cannon till it finishes going through the process, just click to start and move on to the next cannon, it will continue as long as you don't leave the ship.

Left is always left no matter what direction you're going.

Here's a very short read on which is which.

If you don't wish to follow the link then " Since port and starboard never change, they are unambiguous references that are independent of a mariner’s orientation, and, thus, mariners use these nautical terms instead of left and right to avoid confusion. When looking forward, toward the bow of a ship, port and starboard refer to the left and right sides, respectively."

I hate having to "chase down" my prey and having to keep changing direction to get my guns to bear. I discovered that orc nor merchant ship will not move away as long as none of my chars/pets are visible to any of the enemy crew. Therefore when I see a target, I use the macro key "forward" , then HIDE my captain (stealth mage/mystic) behind my Orc Ship's bow cannon until i ram into the target. I then fire& reload - all while remaining Hidden - until ship is disabled then I throw RC's and use Orc slayer spellbook to clear deck crew. Takes a while longer because I am only using the bow cannon but I never have to pursue a fleeing ship.

It's a lot easier than that, you just can't change direction when you are close to the prey. I set my ship sideways to the target and then go left or right until I hit it and then fire away.

Does it turn when the ship turns? or is it permanently that way no matter which way the ship faces? Try taking it home, lock it down in the house, turn it with the decorator tool then put it back on the ship.
it will turn to face east and south depending on the direction of the ship

First I'd try to rotate the ship in suitable direction then mount the wheel.
