I will admit that I have not been playing UO much lately or even paying any attention so maybe I missed reading the memo but... Tonight I logged in for the first time in maybe three months and discovered that my pets no longer do the little “happy dance” animation when I give them a bit of food.

When and, more importantly, why was this change made?

First of all, welcome back!

Have you tried taming something yet and watched the new pet and its life bar closely at the instant it tames? Something has definitely changed. Sometimes it seems as if the animal you were taming has been replaced by a different one, albeit with the stats, resists, and skills you expect. It's a very subtle process, but is most noticeable when the critter was not at full health while being tamed. Voila! Upon being tamed, your new pet just might have instantaneous full health!

It makes you wonder just what magical sleight of hand takes place when the animal accepts you as its master.

:D

P.S. My guess with regard to the lost "happy dance" and the phenomenon I mentioned above is that things are being streamlined for consistency between both clients.

Thanks for the reply.

My first UO character was my tamer, DrDolittle. The first creature that I tamed was a handsome silver horse that I named MrEd. The names were not very imaginative, I’ll admit, but at the time I was about 15 minutes into playing UO and considered the character to be a “throw away” test to be discarded when I learned how to play UO. After nine years, DrDolittle is still my main character and MrEdII (although he took on a new nightmare form) is still my constant companion. I remember feeding MrEd apples by the bushel because I loved the pet’s reaction. It was a wonder the poor horse could still walk!

UO was never a mere game; UO is a virtual world. Too many of the carefully crafted little details, which made up that virtual world, have been removed by careless, uninformed or just plain lazy changes over the years. As strange as it may seem, I will be quite upset if this is an intentional change.

Yeah, there have been a lot of little things lately that just make you shake your head, such as getting the message when you finish escorting an NPC that you've failed your quest, although you received gold and gained in compassion. How does something like that even get coded and then how does it slip through QA?

Ha, I had to happen to me yesterday and was quite confused by it. :)
