She's done a lot of great things for gardening. I express thanks and well wishes on her new journey.

Hate to see her leave. On the other hand, Draconi and Sak leaving has helped me decide to finally close back down to one account. Haven't played in months and with her gone gardening will fall back down the list.

I sincerely appreciate, despite some of my gripes, her contributions and will miss her. :(

In how many years? Look how long it took before Sak got involved. :sad3:

Ah... she was one of the few reasons I started playing again. *sighs*
Not as cohesive a gardening system as I had designed/hoped for, but good at least to have had a temporary advocate.

That said, I still haven't exhausted every permutation of plant combination yet! Back to deco!

This I think was the reason that it took so long for a developer to take gardening seriously. People like you and flora and the other knowlegeable gardeners and even us peeps that are new at it should speak out more on uohall about gardening. "The squeaky gear gets the oil." We don't have a shard wide guild or any other type of representation that brings our cause or fate to the headlines. Gardeners of every shard should form a gardening public ran town (prt) that is sanctioned by their EM's. petition your mods for a gardening sticky like most shards sticky pvp threads. In other words get the word out that we are part of the legend of UO and its continuing story.

We've come so far since I made this post... but too many things went to the wrong places. Too many things to the people that don't actually care about the plants. Still, grateful we at least got some of it.
Good memories :D

Interesting that the thread heavily tied in to player-run towns, which they're finally implementing, and brewery, which they'll never implement.

When i thought about writing this post, i wasnt thinking about adding a new skill, but, with the title: Botany, i thought it would be a good name for a skill, so... what the heck. [grin]

Botany
- Required to grow plants (growing plants should take more skill than: add water, potions, repeat)
- Skill level: % increase to chance of getting a mutated (black/white) plant (every full skill point adds 1% to the chance, so 100 skill would double the chance)
- Skill level /10 = percent to get double resources (100 skill = 10% chance at double resources)
- Skill is gained while taking care of the plant

Plants
-Plants should be able to be grown on earthy house tiles, and some are limited to be only grown on certain tiles.

- All graphic variation of plants are growable, and are random

- If not specified plants will have their regular 8 seeds

- If not specified plants will take the usual 1 week to grow

- Trees and plants and monsters can be planted outside in player-run towns, but must be at least 1 tile away from other tile-blocking things (Yew trees must be at least 10 tiles away from another yew tree). When planted outside they no longer require to be watered or cared for, but still can produce resources. Monsters that can roam can only roam inside the town's borders, and there is a limit to 1 monster for every 50 tiles that the town encompasses. And yes, i am aware that there is no way to make an official player-run-town... yet.

- Land can be rented from NPC farmers. This will work like stables, you can care and tend for your plant through the NPC, but it's not visible. When withdrawing Trees If they are too heavy they will be placed in a pack animal that you have, or if you have no pack animal they will be placed on the ground (monsters that can move can just follow you). Patches of plants (mandrake, cotton, garlic, carrots etc.) can not be withdrawn but can be deleted. Trees cost 2000 gp per week to grow this way (Yew cost 5000 per week), monsters cost 2000 per week and plants cost 200 gp per week to grow this way.

- There will need to be a few tiles added to make this idea work: farm tiles, desert tiles and forest tiles

- Plants dont take lockdowns, but must be dug up in order to be moved

- Resources collected from plants are increased by 1% for each point in C A M P I N G : 2 skill gives a 2% increase, 50 gives a 50% inc, 100 skill gives double.

- If a plant produces resources, and the resources arent collected that same day, the resources decay, and are lost. Exception: parrots from treefellows and ambers take 3 days to decay

MANY thanks to the flora section of stratics, most everything in here is gotten from there, the Hunter's Guide section for some of the pictures, Ryna McBegg for thw tree radius and tools idea, BlueBottle for the "monster" plants idea, Barok for the NPC farmer idea. everyone else for encouraging and bumping this post [grin]
*sighs* reading through this again brings back nostalgia. :)

Also, I'm building a memorial to Sakkarah on LS, if you have any rubble plants/rocks you want to donate, I'll need more than I can get.

Wow S.M. You really went all out. That did give me an idea though. A future botany upgrade should include plants that when mature yields a poison fruit that can be thrown by those with the throwing skill and others that yield the pvp apples and grapes. I think I will post this on Uhall.

Yea, I made that thread years back, before ML (and then updated it slightly after ML).

Yellow Beard: I think there was a small multi shard gardening club or sorts several years ago when gardening was introduced. It was similar in spirit to the United Fishers of Britannia. Alas, it died off as people left or stopped gardening for whatever reasons. Would be very nice to have something like that again.

Stupid Miner: I remember when you posted those ideas. I wasn't using the Flora name at the time, but if I recall correctly you received positive feedback from the community. :)

It's certainly an interesting idea but adding a gardening skill would require a lot of work to make it worthwhile - as it stands, almost anyone can garden and that's fun. Adding another skill would make a full gardener template possible (although I'm making a gardener on Siege... cooking, alchemy, and fencing for killing those annoying monsters!), but it would exclude many people who want to garden as a hobby or just for resources.

Also, what would happen if the skill check failed? Would the plant die, and leave you with a bowl of dirt? If you successfully passed the skill check to plant the seed and were going to gain from it when tending you'd have to have consequences for failure during tending... and the only consequence of a failed skill check that I can see is killing or wilting the plant. So every day, you'd log in to plants that you might have wasted several potions on just for the chance that they'd get to full growth. What would the failure rate be at 100 Botany? Would we get a scroll to get to 120? What would this do to plant and resource prices?

I do think it's an intriguing idea, and it could use some more looking into for sure, but I'm wary of the consequences. I forsee houses inside Yew trees...

Oh yea, I didn't care so much for the skill part myself, but some people wanted it.

I forsee houses inside Yew trees...
... which to me would be amazing.
